Game Thread #52: Braves (28-23) at Brewers (24-27)
I had a dream last night that Ned Yost had been fired, and then he caught on in the Mets minor league system as a player, but people immediately started talking about him as a replacement for Willie Randolph.
Really. I had that dream.
Tonight's matchup is Tim Hudson vs. Dave Bush, which means we better milk the home-field advantage for all it's worth. Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

seeing the brewers on tv
I’m back home in WI now, and we have Dish Network. Can anybody tell me what channel FSN is? I’ve been looking and I have a terrible sinking feeling that we don’t have it.
418?

this just in:
Dave Bush sucks.
The fact that he’s still in our rotation is probabl the greatest indictment of Melvin’s work as a GM, at least in my opinion. Not even because he’s terrible, but because there simply aren’t many viable alternatives to replace him with.

how's what's-his-name (vargas?) doing for the mets now?

last I looked
One excellent game, his first, where he got a standing ovation on leaving and one not good, where he gave up 4 in 5 innings I think. That was to Atlanta.
Watching the game
In Atlanta on SportsSouth. Don Sutton did his best verbal dance to be nice in his intro on Bush. Does Bush know that if you throw a pitch down the middle twice in a row most Major leaguers can hit it out of the Park???
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!

I meant that Chipper constantly has problems with his hamstrings, quads, etc
He should be minimizing the sprinting.
He's extremely quick and good.
That was sprinting?
It was painful to watch.

Uke keeps saying change up/curve to describe Bush's pitches
The curve should bend in completely the other direction so if Uke can’t tell the difference that isn’t a good sign.
isn't a good sign...
of the pitching, or uke’s vision/cognition?

Funny you say that
PITCHf/x thought it was in almost exactly the same place as ball 2 and 3. I mean basically on top of each other.

Brian consistently misuses "[player] would be next"
Someone needs to tell him that you say that when that person is not assured of batting.
He's extremely quick and good.
Now that Bill Schroeder retired
it’s gonna be a struggle for him for awhile
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
speaking of Bill Schroeder
the football guy that is…
they didn’t mention the terms of his one-day contract. did he get a signing bonus?:P

Braun is really remarkable at hitting those low and away pitches
A couple times this year he’s actually pulled them for doubles.
He's extremely quick and good.
And Fielder going opposite field again
I know he isn’t hitting the homers but he looks good at the plate right now.
Binge upcoming
I think he’s gonna have a week where he hits 5 or 6 and then everything will be good again
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
He's almost hitting homers
I’ve been out of town and haven’t caught many of the recent games live, but going back and watching Prince’s ABs on the mlb.tv archives, he’s had a bunch of almosts.
He's extremely quick and good.
Ugh
At least we made Hudson work that inning. Still gotta cash those opportunities in when we have them today.
Even though it didn't pan out
I really love having Hart, instead of Hall, come up after Braun and Prince. When I realized Braun wasn’t going to score, I felt like throwing in the towel on that inning, but then remembered that Corey was next, not Bill.
He's extremely quick and good.
Yeah I agree completely
It sure seems like a good batting order makes a huge difference. It sure is funny that it doesn’t seem to. Still I want Corey batting 5th and I have no idea what Yost was thinking at the beginning of the year.

Gregor F. Blanco?
Check out those slugging percentages; that was his first career homer.
He's extremely quick and good.
Uke says
“they are not bad when there is nobody on”. That is somewhat true but if you give one up an inning it doesn’t make much of a difference.
Fantasy talk. Ignore it if you don't give a shit.
what the deuce should I do will Bill Hall? Just play him against lefties?
Is there any other option at this point in the season?

Waaaaay to many better options. He would help a little against lefties but it can’t be worth the roster spot. IMO.

hey Dixie - gameday accuracy question
You said that it could be inaccurate. There is pitch identification, the track of it, and the location as it reaches the plate. Correct anything wrong.
But are all three of those variable in quality? Location is the one that seems most relevant or at least that I end up looking at. How about that?
Location where the ball crosses the plate is by far the best variable
The track I would describe as bad and the pitch identification I would describe as not good but getting a little better.
by dixieflatline on May 27, 2008 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions
I should note that they give you the location where the ball crosses the front of home plate
If it is still breaking toward home plate it could still be a strike even if it is off the plate at the front. I am working on a system that would record if any part of the ball touched any part of the plate but it is harder than you would think. Asking if a helix crosses paths with a funny shaped 3D strike zone thingy is kind of a mess.
by dixieflatline on May 27, 2008 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions
what's this
making me think about work?
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions
you need one of those newfangled
multicamera system that tracks the ball’s position in 3D – like they’ve recently developed for Grand Slam tennis events. I take it the data you’re given is 2D + time?
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions
No it is fully 3D
That is why the home plate zone is a mess to define with a cube in front and a triangle thingy in the back. I have successfully gotten a system in place that moves the ball forward every 0.001 seconds and then checks if the ball is in the zone but that is too slow to run over 330,000 pitches. I need something more mathematical like a line crossing a plane. The problem is I have something much more complex than a line and something much more complex than a plane.
by dixieflatline on May 27, 2008 8:01 PM CDT up reply actions
i guess
the simplest solution would be to make the plate a rectangular cube, then estimate the ball as a straight line from .1 second out or something. If it crosses the cube or gets close, do the fully accurate model with triangle+cube assumptions. Otherwise call it a ball outright.
might save your calculations some time if you can prune away a bunch of crap. And obviously you can prune if it enters in the front of the plate and exits the back of the plate from the center of the cub, because that’d be a strike for sure.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah straight lines are not going to work
Pitchers get a ton of movement on their pitches. Sheets’ curve for example. It really isn’t a huge deal and the front of the plate is mostly fine. Just something I am playing with.
by dixieflatline on May 27, 2008 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions
For his career, Weeks bats .120 against Atlanta
and bats lead off as usual. Do we have a left-handed 2nd base player, maybe one who is on the ash heap toiling in Tennessee or Alabama for this team who can rescue the number one hole? It’s worked so well at 3rd base…..
I know, “Weeks as been on a roll lately….”

Crabbe is a switch hitter
And is really, really short. I don’t think he is the answer though. If you can’t stick with the Padres this year that isn’t a great sign.

Funny,
Bush has lowered his ERA with this start so far. Yet is sure seems like he is sucking it up.
what the
is this opposite day? the bottom of the braves order has more hits than the top. The pitcher has a hit and someone who has never homered before has one of those.
does bush really really slack off against the sucky players. Does he “play down” to their level?
Bush
I don’t think he slacks off….just makes bad pitches.
Anybody know how many runs the Brewers
plated in the first five innings TOTAL during the last road trip? I’m thinking it was less than a dozen. It feels like the offense is mailing in the front half of each game.
by heybatterbatter on May 27, 2008 8:17 PM CDT reply actions
Bush
He’s pitching better tonight though….just a couple pitches up they hit out. We need to get the bats going!!!!
Well there were a few other warning track shots
And Jones’ double to the gap and several other well hit balls. No walks except for the semi-intentional walk.
by dixieflatline on May 27, 2008 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Pitching
Pitching isn’t the real issue so far this game. Its Tim Hudson!!!!!
Brewer Bats
The Brewer bats are anemic once again!!!!! This is getting old. Also, where are the HR’s??? We got a POWER OUTAGE (except for Braun) in MKE!!!!!!
Just Frustrated!!!
I would make an extremely UGLY cheerleader!!!
Runs
They better score at least one run this inning!!!!!!
So when does the offense start regresssing upwards towards the mean?
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
um. is that yost's job?
or sveum? or the baserunners?
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions
should he even HAVE to give the signal
c’mon. I learned in little league to run there, regardless of if the coach had his thumb up his ass.
So, yost should have signaled sveum to signal the players? But if yost doesn’t signal, sveum can’t figure it out? And if sveum can’t figure it out, the players can’t either? What if sveum missed Yost’s signal because he was in la-la land?
I place most of the blame on the players in that situation, secondly on sveum…lastly on yost.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Didn't he retire?!?!?!?!?!?

the question is
does he settle in now and become a .500 pitcher or does he choke away the four or five in a row that he’ll get thanks to tonight

I hope this isn’t a turnbow-esque performance

or...be intentionally walked
I’d rather pitch to Branyan than Hardy here I think.
He's extremely quick and good.
a double with two out and prince doesn't score?
that vegetarian diet isn’t doing well by him. He was faster last year – see the inside-the-park footage.
It was a groundball down the 3B line that bounced off the tarp
He had no chance to score.

brilliant plan
the Braves are allowing us this inning in an attempt to get Tavarez to not come out next inning.

Bill makes a good point that if that goes through, two runs probably score though.

he's only in the 120s
I wonder if he gives the same explanations afterwards after it all blows up as Ned
yeah...
in a situation like that, don’t you want to make the injured pitcher throw more than he’s comfortable. milk a walk out of the situation or serve up a lollipop?

And leading the league for errors at 3b
For all the talk what an improvement he has been on defense over Braun, he still is #1 in the entire MLB in errors for 3B… I have seen him make some great plays as well,

Great production
From both players at 3B today… Hall scores winning run by stealing3rd, Branyan doubles and scores a run as well

awesome win
bloop single, sac bunt, stolen base, walkoff sac fly
if that’s not “manufacturing runs” I’m not sure what is
also
hart managed to stay above .300 after not getting a hit the first 3 ABs and dropping below. And Braun made up for the last few days by going 3 of 4 and getting back to .290
everyone with a hit except kendall and weeks. great day for JJ too.
great freaking day for JJ
he must really NOT like hitting in front of the pitcher. Same slot (7) different order = completely different results for JJ. I think he did pretty well yesterday too.
by PagsBrewCrew on May 27, 2008 9:41 PM CDT up reply actions
I think the experiment with Kendall at 9 may be over
If JJ keeps this up… Yost won’t go back to the old order I am guessing… I don’t think it makes a difference one way or another, but if JJ is adamantly against it… I am guessing Yost will go along with the traditional order
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
