Game Thread #53: Braves (28-24) at Brewers (25-27)
Last night the Brewers looked like a bona fide Major League baseball team. Maybe it was the Julian Tavarez effect?
It's been an two whole days since Tim Dillard pitched, so I think we can expect him to see some action. Bridging the gap between the National Anthem and Dillard is Jeff Suppan, who is taking on Jo-Jo Reyes, a lefty.
Here's the BR Game Preview. Game time is 7:05 CT.
Go Brewers!

big assist from Hall
I’m told that in the postgame interview, Hall said he stole third on his own.

You are right
Cox set the bar low last night. But Ned did some ok things with the Pen and such.
by dixieflatline on May 28, 2008 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions
It's not actually a big deal
I just think that Ned would be more than happy to let Cameron sac fly Hall over to third and then leave it up to Braun to drive the run home or go to extra innings. I’m not a big small-ball guy, but sometimes you need to show a little urgency to win now, especially if you spend time complaining about an overworked bullpen.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 28, 2008 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Without a doubt
Reading the Braves message board put some perspective on our demands for firing Yost… Cox will go down as one of the better managers of the era, and fans were calling for him not only to be fired, but unfortunately, die.
Maybe since Yost comes from Cox’s coaching system, it makes them both susceptible to criticism. I feel it is always NL managers that are on the hotseat… while the AL, they don’t have to really manage the game except deciding when to change pitchers.

True
I remember when Charlie Manuel (sp?) came to the NL he admitted that he didn’t know how to execute a double switch. Phils fans were happy with that comment.

Didn't see the lineup posted
But Hall is back
2B Rickie Weeks
CF Mike Cameron
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Corey Hart
3B Bill Hall
SS JJ Hardy
C Jason Kendall
P Jeff Suppan

The Brewers...
...sure hit well against leftys last year. Are they doing as good this year?
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
There is something
about Jeff’s glove that pisses me off. I don’t know what it is, the shape, mabey?
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
I thought that about Gorzellany and a few other leftys
Hope you’re right though. It’d be nice to see a game with a big number for a change.
Anybody think...
...Braun and Fielder should switch spots in the lineup?
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
Why not?
Fielder would probably get some good pitches to hit. And in the beginning of the season Braun was struggling, so it would be a different situation
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
Well, last season both struggled with the switch
I like having the higher batting average guy being in the three spot rather than the four, and Prince strikes me as much more of a prototypical clean-up hitter. But I really really like Braun in the 3 spot
If we had a 5 hitter who was lefty I would
But I see no reason for it right now… I didn’t mind having Yost starting the season with it, and I didn’t mind when he switched it back, as both players feel “comfortable” in the spots… although I think a player should be comfortable where ever they bat, and Soriano drives me nuts on insisting he bats better in a certain spot
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
I don't know...
...might be worth a try if they continue to struggle to put up runs.

So, is anyone else not in favor of instant replay?
I’ve always loved the tradition and old-fashioned feel of the game, and I prefer to see the umps get it wrong a few times rather than bring in replays.
I hate instant replay in football
However, the major complaint I have about football is all the interruptions and time wasting. In baseball, the manager comes out and argues and wastes a bunch of time, anyway. I guess, because of that, I’m neutral.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 28, 2008 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Managers arguing
is what makes me favor replay. If the time is going to be used the call might as well be right. I would like it for home run calls and fair/foul, and plays at the plate only.
It's not always right
I say this as a still-bitter Sooners fan who witnessed two painfully obvious instant replay errors steal a game from his team.

sort of a related note
Heard Brenly say – and this is a paraphrase – “Soriano is good offensively, but defensively you can throw a dart at the dugout and come up with a better defender.’
Tons of Cubs fans I know keep throwing around the Braun = shitty defense thing
It’s like they don’t realize he changed positions or something
I still don't think he is polished
Or even above average right now… he looks dumb in a lot of his plays, he is an all or nothing player it seems, similar to Bill Hall, has made a lot of great play, but leads all 3B in errors… it is much more difficult for LF to get errors.
I think in a year or two, he will be an average LF, but nothing more

I feel it is not having trouble with pitcher
I makes me sick to write this, but It is just that a lot of our hitters had their best year last year or the year before, and aren’t really that good… It seems a lot of pitchers with eras in the 5s manae to hold the Brewers to 0, 1 or 2 runs
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
There was another hit to JJ's RZR
That’s exactly the area he doesn’t tend to cover. Like jacob says, guys who shift over get penalized in that stat
by Marty McSuperFly on May 28, 2008 8:15 PM CDT reply actions
It is hard to say
BIS doesn’t say how they count zones for shifts as far as I know. They pretty much don’t say anything about their stats though.
by dixieflatline on May 28, 2008 8:21 PM CDT up reply actions
i'm pretty sure
that whatever the zones are, they are consistent from AB to AB. So the conventional wisdom that “shifts -> less accurate RZR” is true.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on May 28, 2008 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions
Right
I’m actually basing that on the assumption that the zones are relatively constant. I took a look at Pinto’s PMR graph for JJ and the area he covers is almost exactly the shortshop’s zone, just shifted over so he misses that side, and gains out-of-range outs closer to second.

Therefore:
Stat was ruled irrelevant and was never spoken of again.

But if you can’t find a way to objectively measure performance on the field, you end up fielding a team like the Giants.
by Marty McSuperFly on May 28, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Sure. Still an inexact science, yet
if you see a player/team every day and take notes, statistical analysis can be supplemented enough to make an accurate call, if the observers are well-trained.
