Game Thread #54: Braves (28-25) at Brewers (26-27)
We're only one Braves-fan-soul-killing one-run victory away from sweeping one of the better teams in the league!
On the mound today is Seth McClung, in his second start of the year, against Jorge Campillo, in the fourth start of his major league career. I guess the momentum is working for the Brewers, but some of that momentum seems to be based on striking out a lot and hitting into a ton of ground ball outs.
Game time is 12:05 CT. Here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Soft platoon, eh?
Seems like Campillo would be the sort of righty that Hall might get to face. Not today.

Cubs starting a 4 game series with the Rockies
It hasn’t been a good year for Francis but he has talent and if the Rocks hope for a split getting this game would be a good start. BTW, the Cubs are finally going to get some road games with 16 of 19 on the road after this home stand ends. They have already played 30 games at home and only 23 on the road and they will be +11 at then end of this home stand.
really interested in how they do on the road
This will be a tough test for them and we obviously need them to give a few games back during this stretch. We finally will have some home cookin’ for a stretch too. Lets go Crew!

Day. Game
This brings me back to early this season when it seemed I was listening to every other game at work
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Campillo
I was just looking him up as I haven’t seen him before. Here is his movement plot:
Very over the top with a big hook. His curve is decidedly different than his fastball so maybe that will help our bats. The really strange thing is he throws very few fastballs, just under 34 percent by my count. That is ungodly low especially for a starter. The reason, he only averages 87 MPHs with it! Maybe not a great match up for us though as we have been swinging at a lot of bad pitches as a team lately. Gotta make this guy throw strikes.
what the heck
is greg norton batting 5th for? i didn’t even know he was still in the league

Corky Miller's playing
Neat. I wonder if he’ll get his slugging percentage above .100.

Braves 1B coach
Man, he’s short next to Chipper Jones. Granted Jones is 6’4”, but still. He had a nice beard during his playing days though.

I'm almost surprised
He didn’t talk about Norton’s 1.000 batting average with the bases loaded this year (3-for-3).

Perfect situation for that underworked bullpen ;)

i heard a little of Ned in the pre-game
he was talking about how he had thought about how to use the bullpen over winter and how he asks Simmons questions all the time. It sounded like something a AA coach would say if he wanted to be the manager some day.
Did I just see
a 7 pitch inning for McClung? That’ll work…..

Bottom of the order there
Still the Braves appear ready to hack today. Make that first pitch a good one today.

Campillo
I wonder how long the Braves will let him pitch. His previous two starts were 78 (6 scoreless IP) and 59 pitches (4 scoreless IP), respectively.

i'm not sure he's crappy
but I wonder how a guy pitches for years in the Mexican league and gets “discovered.”

When you top out at 87 and are right handed that can be an issue. Who knows maybe he was topping out at 84 a few years ago.
by dixieflatline on May 29, 2008 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions
What’s weird is, according to Baseball Cube, he was signed as a 17-year-old in 1996 by the Braves, then loaned to a Mexican team, and then released less than a year after signing; after that, he didn’t resurface again until 2005.
He's extremely quick and good.
Spooky....
I expect the next bit of info to be that Campillo burned down back in 1996 under suspicous circumstances.

If this team is serious about winning soon
They have to pick between Weeks and Fielder. They cannot be together on D on the right side.
It won’t work. Sorry.
We can move Prince to center
that thought just makes me chuckle.

They'll talk forever about bats, hitting to the opposite field, the roof, and any other random nonsense
But the fact that McClung just walked Jeff Francoeur is barely noted.

They talked about a collision-related injury
So they kind of mentioned it.

No one's going to make a snarky comment about where Hall would have thrown that?

What would Hall's trade value be?
I’m not ready to completely give up on him yet, just curious what kind of return we could get for him. His contract is high but he does have the ability to play a lot of different positions

I understand what Dusty Baker said about clogging up the bases.
Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.
So Brewers should have 3 runs right now?
Hart’s interference cost them one, and the baserunning of Prince?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Hart's interference caused the bad throw to third
Braun may have been thrown out if corey didn’t move and the baserunning was corey’s fault not prince’s.
Not quite
Hart’s interference cost them a possible steal of 3rd. Assuming that the throw would have gone into the outfield with the interference is a little dicey.

Why isn't Simmons coaching at third?
He’s a pimple on the ass of the dugout, as far as I can tell. Simmons on third and everyone else keeps their assignments. That said, Corey screwed up.

Get used to the guy. It wouldn’t surprise me if he is here for a couple more years even if the Brewers don’t make the playoffs. Listened to Cox today on the radio and he used some phrase like “management is fully behind Yost.” Mark A. just gave him his vote of confidence.
Maybe I’m wrong. At least they’ve cut back on the Yost cam.
Bobby Cox probably knows a lot about the Brewers front office

i doubt he invented it. He probably talks to Ned regularly. Perhaps his GM knows Melvin. You probably know a lot about those relationships.
But you should be happy. Aren’t you a Ned fan?
Not really
Just saying relying on Bobby Cox (one of Yost’s friends) for information on how the Brewers front office feels is probably not the best idea.

It sucks to lose today (and there still is a chance to win) but 2 of 3 here is not bad
The Braves are a good team and Sheets didn’t pitch this series. If we can take 2 of 3 when that happens we will be just fine.
We walk 11 Braves and strike out 9 times
and Yost is in his groove, mishandling the pitchers.
It’s a perfect storm.

Backe, Moehler and Chacon coming up - 3 rightys
So challenges ahead along with some hot bats coming in. Seems like Ned will have to get Billy in there one or two of those days to maintain the “soft” platoon.
sigh
why not pinch hit the backup catcher for kendall at the end? Crash doesn’t have nearly the average or ability that he showed in the first week or two. They “need” a 7 run rally to do it, which would require batting around at least once. So tying the game isn’t likely to happen, but don’t you want to give yourselves every chance possible to do so?
