Game Thread #55: Astros (30-25) at Brewers (26-28)

If you had told me during spring training that, two months into the season, the Astros would be comfortably ahead of the Crew in the standings, I wouldn't have believed it.  Presumably Lance Berkman will stop OPS'ing a gazillion, and the Astros will drift back to .500...by which point, I hope, the Brewers will no longer be below that mark.

The pitching matchup tonight is Brandon Backe and Manny Parra.  Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview

Go Brewers!

So

are the Cubs ever going to lose again? Down 8-0 and they come back to win? They are on fire.

Happenin' place tonight

Wasn’t J.R. Towles supposed to be an offensive upgrade over Ausmus?

well, he's certainly younger and taller...

Perhaps that’s what they meant by “upgrade.”

Quick inning for Parra

Maybe get rid of the line drive off the body in the future. His ERA is almost under 5.00 now.

Back to back

this could be a nice little Friday.

Braun

Could’ve at least waited until the Mercedes promotion to give a lucky fan a car. :)

Picnic area

I love how everyone just sat there even as Braun’s shot was coming right at them

Damn Jay

you had to taunt Towles

by molitorfan on May 30, 2008 7:30 PM CDT   0 recs

I also mentioned Parra's ERA

Shucks.

Ha

no one mention a former Brewer who plays LF

I want to see him doing his approximation of sprints out there.

I wonder what Greg Vaughn's up to these days.

Wearing bright green batting gloves

and coming to the plate to “Nothin’ But a G Thang”. Great at bat music. I loved Vaughn.

Rickie

has been covering 1B well on bunts.

there was the 2-5-4(@3) DP the other day. And on the recent SB, he covered first.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 7:36 PM CDT   0 recs

Weird guy. Did anyone ever hear any comment about the play where he cut off the ball last game?

by ol Pete on May 30, 2008 7:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

he did get DFA'ed on a road trip

but that was over two weeks ago. wouldn’t someone have let him in to clean up his stuff? he had said he was going to report to Pawtucket, after all. (Ah, baseball stories.)

He’s an odd one. The day before the Sox sent him down he was walking around the field at the Metrodome and appeared to be giving other guys pitching tips (from what I could hear,) including Daisuke Matsuzaka. Hmm.

by morineko on May 30, 2008 7:47 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Cameron now has more HR than Fielder

and he missed the first 15 games…

Any of you more knowledgeable in peripheral-stats able to give me some hope that Fielder has just been unlucky or something?

"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder

by SRB on May 30, 2008 7:54 PM CDT   0 recs

about the HRs… shhhhhhh…

about the stats, I would go to baseball-reference.com and look for babip – and I’m no expert by any means.

by ol Pete on May 30, 2008 7:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

err...

babip has nothing to do with HRs;) 3TO need not apply:P

25 Games

it was 25 games!

And I thought Marty already covered it, it’s not luck. It’s the fact he’s a veggie eating, card carrying member of the communist party.

I love Braun's plate coverage

He's extremely quick and good.

Braun

2nd RBI

by molitorfan on May 30, 2008 8:01 PM CDT   0 recs

It might help

Parra’s pretty good at giving him reasons to.

Hopefully not recurring like a nightmare.

by ol Pete on May 30, 2008 8:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Parra is an exceptionally good batter

for a pitcher. look at him milk 9 pitches off the opposition. Sure, it didn’t come out to an RBI, but you gotta give him props for trying.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

true

I kept wondering if a bunt toward Wiggington would’ve been a good strategy.

He’s so hot right now.

isn’t too bad either. Maybe JJ can share the wealth after the game.

I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I’m selling? No. Do I know what I’m doing today? No. But I’m here, and I’m gonna give it my best shot.

Also, cheese.

Is it time for a Parra-tay?

only 72 pitches

He’s got at least 10 pitches left in him:)

Earplugs?

Anyone notice the white thing in his left ear? Is it earplugs? Anyone with delicious HD FSN able to see if it’s in his right as well?

by SgtClueLs on May 30, 2008 8:46 PM CDT   0 recs

earplugs

delicious hd tells me that they looked like a wax-like earplug in both ears.

Question

are Hart and Braun’s good days inversely related?

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 8:50 PM CDT   0 recs

what the hell

average a couple of those pitches out (high and in the dirt), and he still missed the strikezone inside

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 8:53 PM CDT   0 recs

My vote

that’s all for Parra. 87 pitches and he’s losing control.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 8:57 PM CDT   0 recs

He's extremely quick and good.

Ian Curtis of Joy Division, one of whose songs was “She’s Lost Control”.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on May 30, 2008 9:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

okay...

that was obscure

i was thinking you were jumping for “Joy”

and of course i only knew who it was after looking at the URL tag and wiki’ing it.

by PagsBrewCrew on May 30, 2008 9:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It’s a pretty famous song, and a harrowing one. Kind of like watching Parra walk Ty Wigginton three times.

He's extremely quick and good.

Nice

6 innings from the starter
