Proposing new moniker for Mr. Gagne
It does appear that the Crew has not had much luck in signing bigger name free agents. At least we haven't been burned in signing a really big name - mainly because we could not afford one. I guess our best signing (for the money) would be someone like Jeff Suppan. But the overpaid failures...
This brings us to our most recent fiasco - Eric Gagne. I didn't know what to call him when I discussed him with other baseball fans. Then I decided to reach back almost a hundred years and remembered a (ill-deserved) Hall-of -Famer!
Milwaukee, I give you Eric Gagne - "The $10,000,000 Lemon".
As a fan, of course, I hope he can match Rube Marquard and change the "Lemon" into a "Beauty"

The rest of the internet seems pretty fond of "Gag-me"
He's extremely quick and good.

Wait, what?
How is Suppan not an overpaid failure?

Suppan
Wait, I get it. It goes something like, “He’s not very good, but at least he’s out there a lot.”

I've taken a zen approach with Gagne now
When he comes in to any game I simply turn off the game from MLB.TV and check the score after 15-20 minutes. If he actually gets the save he probably did it in dangerous fashion by loading the bases or something and thats just gonna make me nervous and terrified. If he loses the game for us then I DEFINITELY don’t wanna watch it. And even if he actually pitches a 1-2-3 inning I don’t wanna watch it. I refuse to watch an inning like that cuz it just gives me false hopes for the future that he will certainly destroy. This is the only way that I can survive the season while watching “The Canadian Collapse”
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay

Ohm
If the blown save will not go to Gagne, then Gagne must come to the blown save.

Wow I thought I was the only one
I do it for health reason my heart cannot handle watching him pitch if he does not blow the save i go back and rewind the old DVR and watch the inning if he blows it I just swear a lot and go sulk
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

Making fun of him is just fine
but I’m not too angry at him or Melvin. Considering the other options that were available, I can’t say I’m terribly angry with the signing. Re-signing Cordero for more than $46 million would have been disastrous.
I really think he has been unlucky and I’m not worried about him too much. His WHIP is about 1.7, which is bad, but Mota’s is 1.5 and he’s done well thus far.
It comes down to what would have been available. If they could have signed Octavio Dotel to that 1 year, $10 million deal, that would have been better, but given what was available I’d rather have Gagne than no one at all. Then one of Torres, Riske, and Mota would not be available when they’re needed most, and the team would be weaker overall.

ack
Looks like a bunch of false choices there
1. Gagne v. Cordero – None of the above
2. 1.7 WHIP v 1.5 WHIP – Neither
3. Gagne vs. phantom Dotel deal -
4. Gagne vs. Interest-bearing checking – Put that $10 million on ice
Stocking the bullpen with a lot of fair-to-middling relievers, and one high-priced long shot has yielded predictable results. If Melvin can’t come up with better deals than this, then Attanasio is paying him way too much.

It seems to be that Mota and Torres are doing fairly good.
I am just learning about ERA + but from what Paul has taught me Mota and Torres seemed to be good pickups Riske has been over used Turnbow was well Turnblow some of the bullpen issues have to be laid at Villianueva, Bush and Parra’s feet the starters have to start making it into the 6 and 7th inning or it won’t matter who we have in the pen they will all be fried by August.
GAGne is a 10,000,000 mistake and should be laid at the Mustaches feet they cannot say they did not know what they were getting in GAGne he stunk in Boston
Mota will be the Closer by the All-Star Break

We'll see
I’m not confident that Mota and Torres will continue to not suck, but I’d be happy to be wrong. I like Riske all right, but he’s basically a one-pitch guy, and that can’t last.
I like my characterization—fair to middling. I don’t think any of them would be in the running to be a closer on a decent team.

I guess the reason I don't get too worked up about it
is that Melvin saw he had a bunch of middling guys and decided to add one more in Gagne to maximize the value of the others. It wasn’t a great move, obviously, but if the $10 million wasn’t going to get used anyway I don’t mind them taking a gamble on a guy who only pitches in the ninth inning with a lead and allows the other relievers to be used in other critical situations.
It probably sounds like I’m defending Melvin alot. I don’t agree with him all the time, I really don’t like how the roster is constructed right now… two lefties incapable of hitting a home run are currently on the roster, while two lefties are absolutely tearing up AAA pitching and hitting for power. That’s ridiculous to me.

It's not my money
I wouldn’t be caught up in the $10 million, except that it is Gagne’s guarantee that he will close every game, even though he hasn’t pitched well enough to earn it. In this, Melvin has hamstrung Yost, and while there’s still plenty of venom directed at Yost, in many cases Melvin is more to blame for the losses than Ned.

Understand entirely
It’s not just Gagne, it’s Gagne’s “status” and the role of a “closer” that is the problem sometimes.

$10 million
I also am not too concerned about the $10 million to Gagne; I feel it was a good risk.
But please don’t say the $10 million wasn’t going to be used anyway. This isn’t football where there’s a hard salary cap and if you don’t use it you lose it. In baseball, $10 million not spent in 2008 is $10 million they can spend in 2009 over what they were planning.
