Breaking: Yost Is an Ass

I know, this will be shocking to many of you.  This is from the MLB.com site.

Going into the team's series against the Marlins, Weeks was batting .198 as the Brewers' leadoff man, lowest of the 21 Major Leaguers with enough at-bats in that position to qualify for the batting title. Weeks' .326 on-base percentage as the leadoff man ranked 17th of those 21 players.

[snip]

Yet there Weeks was, near the top of the heap in runs scored, entering the series tied for fourth in the Majors with 28. Both players with whom Weeks was tied -- the Cubs' Derrek Lee and the Pirates' Nate McLouth -- sported .411 on-base percentages, 85 points higher than Weeks'.

"That's not a weird stat. Rickie is a run-scorer," Yost said.

That may be true, but doesn't the math make him an unlikely run-scorer?

"It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter," Yost told reporters. "See, you guys have no concept. He's a run-scorer. So there's nothing weird about it. That's what he does."

Ass.

Wow

the media doesn’t understand how OBP works, yet Yost does and knows it leads to scoring runs. I think my respect level just went up a little.

by Hyatt on May 7, 2008 7:55 AM CDT   0 recs

Wellll

The lead-in to the no-concept exchange is that Rickie’s OBP is 85 points lower than Derrek Lee’s and Nate McLouth’s. I think that’s the point - that there can be such a disparity between OBPs yet the runs are still there.

Going by OBP

Who would people want to replace Weeks with at the top? Hart has one of .364 ish right now, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t watch a lot of pitches and he rarely walks (9 on the year).

Kendall. :)

I know it’s a common refrain from the last few years, but we as a team don’t have many lead-off options: we don’t have many high OBP or speedy guys in our lineup. As long as Rickie is playing, we should probably keep him where he is and hope he can turn it around.

My "changing things up lineup"

1. Corey Hart
2. Ryan Braun
3. Prince Fielder
4. Mike Cameron
5. Rickie Weeks
6. Bill Hall
7. J.J. Hardy
8. Pitcher
9. Kendall

I’m not sold on 5-7, but I figure if Weeks gets on base, and Hall doesn’t drive him in, no one will that inning.

I like it!

If lineup really doesn’t matter, why not give more ABs to our better hitters? :)

THANK YOU!!!

i realize this post is a couple days old, so not many may se it, however, this is EXACTLY the lineup i’ve been wanting too see for a while. I’d maybe bat Bill 5 and Weeks 6 or 7, but this is essentially what I think we should be doing. at the very least, move corey to 2 in place of Cameron. I like Cam, but with our current lineup (assuming you leave weeks at 1) I think corey makes the most sense at that spot. perfect combination of power, average and speed. ideally, though i say we give this lineup a shot for a week or so and see what happens. drezdn, why is it that you I seem to agree on most things? have you noticed this?

This better be true

Because I just dropped Yost in my Fantasy Baseball Managers league.

Does Yost make to the All-Star Break

If the team keeps playing like they have been lately?

Last nights game was brutal I guess it does not matter if they hit above avg with RISP if you never get a RISP for 8 of the 9 innings and cannot get a hit when you actually do have RISP in the 9th.

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

by WSB Chris on May 7, 2008 8:39 AM CDT   0 recs

They did have a RISP earlier in the game with Braun on third.

From the looks of Yost, he’s worn down and stressed out. If the team falls under .500 and stays there through the end of the month, I wouldn’t be shocked if he was gone. The thing is, I don’t think what’s going on right now is his fault.

Get more out of the kids?

I think that’s the point of it all. Yost hasn’t done to bad this year so far, not much to complain about. But it seems like he’s not getting the potential out of the kids, be it he’s so much of a “Players Coach” or what, but I’m about ready for a gamble on bringing in fresh blood and see what happens. Earlier the better, as we don’t want to deep of a hole to potential battle out of.

Ok, so what is the solution?

While it take little effort to get the vast majority of the attendees herein to consider bidding on the right to be the guy who throws the switch on the trapdoor under Nedley’s feet what would be your proposed solution once the partying died down?

I believe most of the managerial names that have been tossed around these parts in the past are currently employed or made it clear they really are retired. I be surprised if there is a large contingent of “give Dale a chance” folks around. I guess you could probably consider Kremblas although he is not having the best season himself right now. Undoubtedly someone will suggest we go convince Yount or Molitor to come to Milwaukee but that is possibly a year to late or has failed in the past.

Besides having that feeling in our collective gut (Ok, well at least in mine) that Yost is not going to be the guy that take the Brewers to the post season have we really pondered what we think we need in a manger? Ya, I know, we are just bloggers, and we don’t have the inside info on what Yost is really doing in the clubhouse or how is working the “kids”, the fact still remains for me that I don’t see or get the sense that Yost has the confidence of the players or the knowledge of the game to elevate this roster into October.

So what say you BCB’ers? Who is the right guy if we got an early Christmas present and Nedley was sent to a summer of “left turns” and fishing in the near future? We better have a handful of well considered suggestion while we demand Ned’s head lest we prove Bissinger correct.

Gabe Kapler

Or, Ted Simmons.

I really can’t point to someone and say “he’ll make a good manager.” I can, however, point to one and say “hey, he sucks.” :)

I've heard rumors

that Doug has been lurking around our game threads and is toying with the idea of Yosting Ned and allowing the BCB game thread participants to manage the game from the comfort of our home computers. What do you say Doug, give us a shot.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

by MadJimiBrewha on May 7, 2008 12:00 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I've always thought this would be a great idea

baseball decisions are simple enough. From a business perspective, why not fire Ned, and while we’re interviewing others, manage the games via live internet polls for a week or so. It would seem to have high gimmick value.

by keephopealive on May 7, 2008 12:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It's been done
The Gaedel gimmick took place on Aug. 19, 1951, and was followed five days later by “Grandstand Manager’s Day,” perhaps Veeck’s most elaborate stunt. With himself, former Philadelphia Athletics manager Connie Mack, and thousands of fans holding placards that said yes on one side and no on the other, publicity director Bob Fischel held up cards with proposed moves – steal, bunt, change pitchers – to which the grandstand managers flashed their opinions.

While manager Zack Taylor puffed a pipe and relaxed in a rocking chair, the fans called an excellent game: The Browns won, 5-3, to stop a four-game losing streak.

More on Veeck here.

My contenders:

In this order:

Ted Simmons
Frank Kremblas
Dave Sveum
Don Money
Mike Maddux

The thing about firing a manager right now is that his replacement isn’t set in stone. Anyone hired off this list, with the possible exception of Simmons, would most likely be promoted with an “interim” tag. Then at the end of the year you can re-evaluate, because mid-May-September (100 games, at least) is enough time to allow players to settle in and get a feel for how well a new manager interacts with his team. If Ned gets fired in, let’s say, mid-August, then it’s harder to judge an interim guy based on 30-40 games.

by KLSnow on May 7, 2008 12:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I know Ted Simmons is the popular choice

But I would go get Pete Mackanin who is currently a scout for the Yankees he should have gotten the Reds job instead of Dusty Baker.

I think he did a excellent job with the Reds last year after taking over in mid season the was actually 2 games over 500 and that club never quit on him they were playing hard right up to the end of the season

I think the Reds will rue the day they let him go.

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

by WSB Chris on May 7, 2008 12:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What's a manager to do?

There’s a line from a classic Marx Brothers movie of some 70 years ago. Groucho, who plays a doctor who has been giving a hard time to another doctor. The scond doctor explaims, “Sir, you try my patience!” to which Groucho replies, “Really. Then you must try some of mine.”
Well, Ned has surely tried my patience. Weeks may be one of the top run producers in the NL, but that just means other Brewers are driving him home. If another lead-off man was on base more, do you think he would be driven home more or less often? Lets bring Hart to lead-ff, bat Weeks 7th, and move Hall and Hardy up.
Isn’t it the manager’s job to try to win as many games as he can? He must be willing to make changes if something is not working. If Weeks starts hitting, the limeup can be changed again. I know Ned favors a set lineup, but enough is enough. Would Ned resist replacing Wally Pipp with Lou Gerhing?

by richfry on May 7, 2008 12:18 PM CDT   0 recs

I agree with you on one thing:

And until reading your post, I didn’t realize I agreed:

Maybe Weeks could really perform in the seventh spot. He takes a ton of pitches and is certainly willing to draw a walk, so teams would be forced to throw him strikes. If he walks, he can steal second and he’s got a guy right behind him ready to bunt him over. If he gets caught stealing, oh well, all you’ve lost is a 7-8-9 inning.

All of a sudden, I’m ok with moving him.

by KLSnow on May 7, 2008 12:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, but does this ass have good instincts?

Does it clench at the proper times?

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on May 7, 2008 12:50 PM CDT   0 recs

No and no

Even Ned’s ass can’t do a good job in the dugout or clubhouse.

by Getting Yosted on May 7, 2008 1:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Another question since we are talking about getting rid of Ned

Lets play the what if game. Lets say the Brewers do not right the ship or just hover around .500 for most of the first half of the year.

Do you pull the Sheets trigger and trade him? I am in the camp he will be gone next year just based on who his agent is

So how bad does it have to get before we use the Sheets Trade option?

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

by WSB Chris on May 7, 2008 1:10 PM CDT   0 recs

Let's get

a new manager that can get us deep into October and keep Sheet’s. Next season will take care of itself later.

The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!

by 80badger on May 7, 2008 1:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

The way it works

1. We keep Sheets throughout the season
2. We offer waay too much for him in the offseason, and only a couple of million less than what he signs for elsewhere
3. Sheets walks, we get draft picks
4. BCB breathes a collective sigh of relief, Moustache defends his overly generous offer through the media
5. Sheets is boo-ed the next time he pitches in Milwaukee

Then what?

I know firing Yost would make us all feel good for a week or so, but then what?

I’ve always been under the impression that managers don’t have a lot of impact on the performance of their players. And I don’t think the Crew’s current struggles have that much to do with Ned’s bonehead strategery moves.

I just don’t see Weeks hitting, Prince’s power coming back, Gagne going back to HGH, or four guys in the rotation consistantly making quality starts no matter who you put in the dugout.

Who is the Brewers' top prospect?
  • Brett Lawrie - Cana-DUH!
  • Mat Gamel - A great pure hitter who could potentially play a position of need.
  • Alcides Escobar - The Brewers sorely need his defensive wizardry and contact-hitting approach. He also solves the 3B hole by shifting J.J. over.
  • Jonathan Lucroy - The best catching prospect in the system by virtue of the fact that he can actually catch. His hitting numbers at Brevard are very good on the face of it, but even better after accounting for Space Coast Stadium.
  • Angel Salome - He's leading a Huntsville team that's loaded with prospects in all three slash stats, and he has the tools to be a good defensive catcher.
  • Jeremy Jeffress - The only real pitching prospect in a sea of hitters, Jeffress could potentially ease the pain of losing two aces by blossoming into one himself.
  • Carlos George - Hey, Derek Jeter can't play defense either.
