Thursday's Plastic Cup o' Suck
Suck suck, suckety suck sucked. Sucks suck, sucking suck suck suck. Suck.
The J-S makes the brilliant observation that we're more likely to win in games where our best hitter hits well. Marty then emerses himself in that logic and rips it to little pieces.
Jim Powell interviewed Corey Hart. Listen here.
Injuries:
- John Patterson, who is rehabbing with the Rangers, experienced a setback and has no timetable for a return.
- Barry Zito isn't hurt, but he gave up only two runs last night, which indicates that something is amiss.
- Jack Wilson is behind schedule; he won't be back for two more weeks.
- Yet another setback: Mark Mulder is off his latest rehab assignment. Cardinals fans rejoice.
Roger Clemens isn't going to have anything to do with the Olympic team. Or, stated more properly, it isn't going to have anything to do with him. It's a shame, because according to what turns up in my inbox, there are a lot of interesting drugs to be had in China.
Matt Wise may be about to rejoin the Mets, which might mean that New York will be going with 13 pitchers.
It's a short one, but that's all I've got for today. Enjoy!

Thinking positive
If the Card’s closer blows one more save, he’ll be tied with Gagne!

Putting up a 6.66 ERA in your first rehab attempt seems like a bad omen…

I heard he got hurt again, something with his shoulder, so even a bigger setback
And the Cardinal fans are probably happy with the way their starting pitching is looking so far
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

I would be shocked if they got anything out of him this year

Actually to add a bit to that
Isn’t this kind of an oxymoron: “mild rotator cuff strain”. Especially when you are talking about a guy who is coming off two shoulder surgeries. Even if they trot him out there his arm isn’t going to give them any quality innings this year.

I'm in a Bind
I know its still early, and I’m trying not to panic, but my ass did last night in the 6th inning. It started out as clenched buttocks and some minor flatulence. Then my ass started barking out commands like “Bench Rickie! Put Counsell in the leadoff spot! Pick up Matt Morris for the veteran presence! Sell high on Prince and Braun! Trade them for an established closer!”
My ass has never been wrong before. Should I continue to trust it? Or should I remember that it’s still early and not panic?
I’m also worried that this whole talking-ass thing might affect my job performance.
Don't try to do too much with it. Just take the ball the other way.

maybe your ass has something there
Any chance we could trade Prince and Braun for established pitching, then bring up LaPorta and Gamel and not miss a beat. Laporta’s natural position is first base, and Gamel could even give us plenty of errors at third, so that we wouldn’t feel so nostalgic for Braun.

One game under .500
The brewers look like crap right now… can’t deny that, but why is everyone going so crazy? If we should have learned anything from last year, it would be that the season is so long. Sure we lost Yovanni, which was a huge loss, but this team will bounce back and they are only one game under .500. That’s not that bad.
Also, the mere mention of trading Prince and Braun seems ridiculous to me. Who’s to ever say that these guys are replaceable.
Finally, I don’t blame any part of the season on Ned, except for maybe never having Rickie bunt. After saying that, he needs to go. The need a new boost of energy for this team to reach their potential again.

That’s exactly what I keep telling my ass, but it won’t shut up.

Any word on Turnbow?
IIRC, today is the day when he would be placed on the waiver wire if we couldn’t find a trade partner.
As an aside, there’s a ton of noise when it comes to the rules for picking up a player off the waiver wire. I’ve seen several sites suggest that the team that places the player on the wire has to pay their salary if they are picked up by another team.

No, that's nonsense by those sites
If a player gets claimed off waivers, it’s warts and contracts and all going along with him.
