Game Thread #57: Astros (30-27) at Brewers (28-28)
Hey, .500 is pretty nice, huh? Now if we can just stay there until Sheets's next turn in the rotation...
Sans Mug, here are some daily links:
In case you haven't heard, Manny Ramirez hit home run #500. 500 isn't what it used to be, but it's still pretty impressive. For comparison, our entire starting lineup has 647, and one-third of those belong to Mike Cameron.
Today's matchup is Shawn Chacon and Dave Bush. Bush is coming off of a fantastic outing last week (I was there--I suspect he was showing off for me), while Chacon has been solid all year except for one disaster against the Rangers.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Here's your stay-at-home lineup
Ugh.
Kapler, Dillon, Counsell, and Rivera all starting. Heaven forbid we only start one scrub at a time.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Rickie and Cam
haven’t exactly been raking. Dillon and Kapler are both solid hitters. Kendall has to sit once in a while and Rivera seems comfortable at the plate.
I’m no Yost fan, but I wouldn’t call it a white flag.
then why not bench
weeks or cameron in any of the past few games? why wait to bench them all TODAY?
your rationale is fine for benching ANY of these players, but not all of them at once.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Not to mention the fact that just because you're benching the #1 and #2 hitters (for example)
doesn’t mean you have to put their replacements in the exact same places in the batting order. Quick show of hands: who do you want getting an extra at bat today, Joe Dillon, Gabe Kapler or Corey Hart? Taken individually, I don’t really have a problem with playing Kapler, Dillon, Counsell and Rivera (particularly Rivera) but doing it all on the same day is assinine.
I wonder if the sold out crowd today will think they’re in Arizona with this crew?

What happened to the "soft platoon?"
Chacon and Moehler aren’t exactly dominant so I would’ve thought Hall would’ve started against one of them. I wonder if Braun was going to get a day off until someone reminded the coaching staff it was his bobblehead day.

According to STATS
- The Brewers have won 12 games this season in their final at-bat—tops in the majors.
- Astros catchers are hitting just .169 this season—the lowest average by a team’s group of catchers since 1974.
- Milwaukee has hit just 40 percent (22/55) of its home runs at home this season—the lowest percentage in the National League.
- Michael Bourn has stolen 24 bases this season—tops in the majors and six more than the entire Brewers outfield combined.

bourn is tops in the NL
Ellsbury has 26.
Also, cheese.

Lineup
that is dumb to start all of the bench players at once. That being said, the heart of the lineup isn’t too bad so all hope is not lost.
last time he gave up a couple early
and then settled down. is it too much to ask him of that again?

In more exciting news
Jeremy Jeffress is dominating again: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. He gave up a leadoff homer to Desmond Jennings, who’s a big-time prospect in a loaded Tampa Bay system, but since then, nada.
He's extremely quick and good.
Great comment from BA
“Ned just makes his lineup card by position: 2B bats first, CF bats second.”
Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul."
I noticed that too
They seemed to think it was a joke, but they could be closer to the truth than they realize.
He's extremely quick and good.
keep pitching like that...
and he’ll see huntsville this year.
Also, cheese.

You mean you don't think their armada of old, replacement-level future LOOGYs will hold him back?
He's extremely quick and good.
they'll all be in nashville soon.
Also, cheese.

You're really making me terrified to ask what's going to happen to all of the awful pitching in Nashville...
He's extremely quick and good.
the mets will make us an offer we can't refuse.

What year, battlekow?
I was ‘99.
Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul."
Ah, cool.
Counsell came to chat in the study hall room after winning the World Series. I think I got his autograph on some notebook paper.

My sister-in-law taught at WFBSH while you were there...
... so you’re kind of freaking me out.

Haha, that's not what I meant
Mrs. Kasik was a beast of an old lady, more cave troll than woman.
What’s your sister-in-law’s name?
He's extremely quick and good.
lmao
Ah yes. Who WASN”T hot for Mrs. Kasik. I had forgotten about her.
Ichiro, on facing Daisuke Matsuzaka for the first time: "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul."
lol
she is invited to my best HS friend’s brother’s wedding (sometime this year).
my friend’s brother graduated in 1997, and my friend and I graduated in 1996.
Ned
is a genius! Plus he had the backup catcher in there to get hit by the pitch instead of the starter!
I think the chances of Rivera scoring were correctly evaluated as < Bush's batting average
He's extremely quick and good.
Ueck is in rare form today
he’s making cat and horse noises, making fun of jim … mentioning the game now and then, too!
Also, cheese.
If, heaven forbid, Ueck ever gets dementia...
... how would we know?

Counsell has 2 RBI, Kapler has a double and an RBI triple.
mmmm…. crow. Yost is a genius, and I’m a moron. And damn me if I’m not happy about it.

Nice offensive output today,
and all the scrubs have contributed.
Rockies up 2-1 on the Cubs in the bottom of the 4th
Let’s see how they can blow it today!
He's extremely quick and good.
Jeffress' final line
7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR. He allowed two of the four baserunners in the seventh. Great start.
He's extremely quick and good.
awesome
now, let’s hope he has learned a new way to celebrate

If Counsell can get on, Dillon will (probably) lead off four of the first five innings
He's extremely quick and good.
Extra Innings
I hope that they play the FSN Arizona feed tomorrow. It would be interesting to get Daron’s take on the Crew.
wow
knock on wood but it looks like the crew might finally be able to finish up a sweep.
YoGanna win with Gallardo on the mound.
Mark Prior to have season-ending shoulder surgery.
As someone on BTF said, “What season?”
He's extremely quick and good.
You guys aren't going to believe this
Turnbow threw two scoreless innings today.
He's extremely quick and good.
yeah, Jim mentioned it
I know this isn’t why he’s starting (at least, I’m pretty sure) ... but wouldn’t it be hilarious is D-Bow came back in August to make a spot start or something?

Back to back good starts by Bush
good to see. We’ll take as many of these starts from him as possible.

First time watching Taverez pitch
and the hatred is not gone even though he has the Brewer uniform on.
Hope for flyouts to the warning track,
spectacular defense, and lots of outs on the basepaths.
Whenever prince is at first, he should charge the mound and yell "MEAT!"
Boo
5-3 Cubs bottom of the 7th
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
I'm really torn
I hate it when he pulls crap like starting all the bench players at once, but when it succeeds, spectacularly, I don’t know what to think.

The drop off
of counsell/Hardy Rivera/Kendall is minimal.
