Game Thread #64: Brewers (33-30) at Astros (32-32)

Since the last time the Brewers and Astros met, the Brewers have started to play like they were supposed to, and the Astros have done the same.

The weak link is Roy Oswalt, tonight's starter for Houston, who has pitched more like Jeff Suppan is supposed to.  He hasn't had any truly disastrous outings, but he's held the opposition to fewer than three runs only once in 13 starts.  That's not the perennial Cy Young Award contender we've grown accustomed to.

Seth McClung, on the other hand...he's coming off a strong start against the D-Backs, and has had two respectable outings in three tries.  I'll take it.  It isn't entirely up to him, but the better he pitches, the more likely Jeff Weaver exercises his out clause this weekend and becomes a New York Met.  Or something.

Game time is 7:05.  Here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

With Weeks on the DL, major line-up adjustments tonight

Corey Hart RF
JJ Hardy SS
Ryan Braun LF
Prince Fielder 1B
Russell Branyan 3B
Mike Cameron CF
Bill Hall 2B
Jason Kendall C
Seth McClung P

Just how many strikeouts will the 5,6 & 7 spots have tonight?

I love Corey at the top of the lineup

However the 5,6, & 7 spots scare me too. I’ll give Yost credit on this one, though. I believe this is the best possible lineup under the circumstances.

Corey leading off?

But who will bunt us over in the 5th spot?

How about that. I wonder how regular of an occurrence that’ll be.

He's extremely quick and good.

What, no Counsell?

Then again, McClung’s hitting better than he is…

(Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that Counsell just looks bored out of his mind whenever he’s playing?)

Bill has good numbers against Oswalt

While in general I don’t like like Ned going by those numbers I don’t think it is too bad in this case. Oswalt will give up some homes and that short porch is just so inviting. Plus how much advantage is the platoon split anyway. Defensively though I am not as sold.

Not complaining, just puzzled

I’m just surprised that Ned’s using Counsell as the replacement of last resort lately. He’s started Dillon over him at 2B already. I’m with you on Hall’s defense, though.

I was thinking about Weeks being on the DL

and then I realized that it is all part of “the Plan”. Once he returns there is almost a guarantee of him making a couple rehab starts in Nashville. If I think hard enough I can recall his last trip down there and the spectacle that followed. There is no doubt that this will be the results the 2nd time around as well, at least I can hope for that.

McClung is pitching on 6 days rest right?

Same for Parra tomorrow. I kind of wished they would have skipped his start and pushed him back to the twins series. Lefties do poorly at Minute Maid and most of the key bats for the Twins are left handed.

The Brewers franchise is now 58-629 (.084) when scoring only one run and 6-75 (.074) when scoring only one run for Ned Yost. Someone please use that fact to call for his removal. :)

The team falls to 0-3297 (.000) when scoring fewer runs than their opponent and 0-466 (.000) in those games under Yost.

What a relief!

Because, you know, I’m sooo worried about that right now

surrounded by nerdy Brewers fans

I can see why you wouldn’t be. Just point your keyboard, aim, and you’re bound to hit a winner.

Also, cheese.

That's the trouble with blogging from Mom's basement

The cement walls really screw up the wireless signal.

He's extremely quick and good.

Braves got two

6-5 Cubs in the bottom of the eighth.

Got em off Howry

Heard Lou say in an interview during the Dodgers series that he has three good relievers. There’s Wood and Marmol. I wonder if Howry is the third.

Is that Kyle Snyder?

I was wondering if he was going to stay in Pawtucket all year.

I like what John Farrell’s done with his hair, too.

Just because your Mom pays you an allowance

for taking out the trash, you can’t call it ‘work’. It’s still your mom’s basement.

Pujols left the Cards' game in the 7th

Aggravated the calf pull from a week or so ago. Had to be helped off the field.

I really hope that I don’t see any quotes from McClung taking the blame of the loss entirely on himself. He did too much of that with Tampa Bay, including a game (IIRC where he only gave up 2 runs) where my friend, after reading the quote, said “you know, TB can’t win the game if they can’t score any runs at all.”

Soriano singles, steals 2nd, ball hits him, goes to 3rd.

E1 on the pitcher, should have been 2 outs. next. Lee sac fly to score soriano.

6-4 cubs

09..

Always 09 right?

I’m starting to lose faith in the Crew. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still go to a ton of games, watch just about all of them (That I can). But I’m starting to lose faith that we can turn it around. I guess I’ll frame my 07 playoff tickets, just so I can pretend we made the playoffs.
