Game Thread #68: Twins (33-35) at Brewers (35-32)
Now that the Twins have gotten 10 runs out of their system, maybe they're done.
Right?
Tonight it's Glen Perkins, making his first career start against Milwaukee, and Jeff Suppan, who has eaten innings against everybody. Suppan, actually, is on something of a tear. In his last seven starts, he's gone 5 or more in all of them, and given up more than three runs only once--and that was the game against the Red Sox in which he gave up four. Alright, he's not going to win the Cy Young Award for it, but he's had a 2.66 ERA in that stretch, lowering his season ERA about a run and a half.
Game time is 6:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

speaking of trades
I looked at orioleshangout forum today and some of the trades O’s fans thought is reasonable is mind boggling. I really wish there was a thread or something where they could be collected. A lot of wondering whether they wanted LaPorta, Gamel, Parra, Escobar, Weeks and/or others in various combos for Roberts, their closer Sherrill and some mediocre pitcher.
I'm starting to hope we stand pat.
I’d really rather not give Gamel or Laporta up, and the guys I wouldn’t mind seeing traded won’t bring much in exchange.

He better be careful, because the fans of a lot of teams are planning on him. Another great comment is that Hart, Braun and LaPorta would be the worst defensive outfield in baseball.
That's just become a fashionable thing to say
Just today, BP said this about Braun’s defense:
While Hall has struggled at both third and second since moving to the infield, Ryan Braun’s transition in the other direction has gone much more smoothly. Braun has acquitted himself well so far in left—he has yet to commit an error, has a Range Factor (1.95) that is almost exactly league-average (1.92), and is middle of the pack in Zone Rating. Given Braun’s status as a first-time outfielder, as well as his struggles last season with throwing to first from the hot corner, teams have understandably tested Braun on the basepaths. The second-year slugger has responded with five assists, tied for tops in the National League with Pat Burrell and Fred Lewis. Add in that Braun has actually been better than the average left fielder by FRAA Rate, at five runs above average per 100 games, and it’s clear that his switch to the outfield has gone about as well as the team could have hoped for.
He's extremely quick and good.
I said it a couple of times, but Braun does look better out there than I expected.
There have been some badly misplayed balls, but not as many as I’d feared. The idea doesn’t frighten me defensively as much as it did in April.

Bill with a double
And the crowd goes wild. Very fickle. I guess he still can hit lefties.
He still looks really good once a week when he drives the ball into the gap like that
Really shoots off his bat.
He's extremely quick and good.
So, what do you guys think of the interviews I've been doing?
I know a lot of the questions repeat, but I try to give each one an individual spin. Do they have interesting info, or does it read like media guide stuff?
Unless some of the bigger-name draftees that have so far declined consent to be interviewed, I’m going to soon start to transition to some established minor leaguers.
He's extremely quick and good.
just got back online
the interviews are terrific…gives me a good feel for their mindset and reminds me of my younger days. Keep them up.

Greg Gibson HP ump
One of those guys who thinks the batter’s box is part of the strike zone for leftys.
Baseball is nutty
Fielder dinks it and gets a hit, while Hall hits a screaming liner that almost results in a double play.
He's extremely quick and good.
Dammit. I forgot I hit the pause button to grab something out of the fridge.
No wonder you guys are ahead of my TV.

Hello from the future
Russell Branyan has been declared emperor, and driving has been outlawed. When striking out on a journey, one must walk, at least until home is again in sight, at which point one may enter was is termed the “home run”.
He's extremely quick and good.
Can't fool me. This time anyway.
I hit fast forward during Supp’s at bat…

Brian quickly learning from the Ueck school of overdramatized fly balls
He's extremely quick and good.
Oh man, Hart almost made a circus catch just then
For anyone rereading this later, Delmon Young’s AB in the top of the 7th.
He's extremely quick and good.
Hey, the run doesn't score
The Brewers refuse to let the Twins tie them for most sac flies in an inning this series.
He's extremely quick and good.
Suppan fans Monroe to get out of it
That was a big inning. Great game from Soup.
He's extremely quick and good.
How far back will we have to fall before we hear “Important not to fall [x+.5] games back here”?
He's extremely quick and good.
What baseball playing alien is possessing Branyan right now?

Wooo!!!!!
That Branyan homerun might have been my favorite of the year
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
(I don't think it went out anymore, but there is just no reason for the umpires to not consult a replay)
He's extremely quick and good.
apparently they know this
they’ve swung at 2 out of 13 pitches this inning

Rate Ned's response to the postgame question of "Why did you leave Tavarez in for the 12th?"
1-5, 1 being surly and 5 being apoplectic.
He's extremely quick and good.
So Taveres is at 34 pitches
I kind of didn’t want him to start the inning but isn’t it time to get him now? Dillard? DiFilice? Anyone else?
Ned
The problem is that he can’t call for Turnbow in a situation like this anymore
by keephopealive on Jun 14, 2008 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Something is apparently wrong with Mota
But there’s DiFelice, Dillard…
He's extremely quick and good.
What's with the roaring applause
that many Minnesota fans here?
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
We need a blue 'Y' flag
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
Actually I totally understand this move by Ned
You don’t want to burn your pen up here. It was clear that Taveres could get you another 1/3 of the inning. This way if it goes to the 13th DiFelice will only have pitched 2/3 of an inning.
But if that's the concern, why not just leave Tavarez in?
Bottom line is that if you’re going to pull Tavarez at some point this half inning before he gets 3 out, waiting until he gives up 2 runs and THEN doing it makes no sense to me. Hooking him before the runs are scored makes sense if you’re trying to win the game. Hooking him after he gives up the runs makes no sense if the objective is preserve the pen.
I don’t think it’s a Yosting, because we’ve basically been begging to lose since the 9th, but this fits a pattern of similar moves from Yost that make no sense to me.

So Branyan, Hart, Pitcher's spot
I guess we will see how injured J.J. really is here. Braun and Fielder after that so if anyone gets on we have a chance.
Not that the game wasn't over
But clearly Bill petitioning to get his full time job back at 3rd.

Actually he had it in the glove, but it came out when the impact with the wall forced his arm down.
And that error should not be on Cameron. That was Hall’s fault.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jun 14, 2008 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions
Unless the idiot official scorer is calling the error on the ball coming out of Cam's glove
instead of on the throw.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jun 14, 2008 9:47 PM CDT up reply actions
The tend to give the error on the thrower not the catcher on those
by dixieflatline on Jun 14, 2008 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I know.
I bet even Hall would say that he should have handled that play.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jun 14, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Do these interleague games actually count in the standings?
I think we should follow soccer’s lead and call them “friendlies”
The crazy thing is the Twins offense has been pretty bad this year
You would never know it from this series though. McClung tomorrow. Yikes.

last year
I seem to remember them smacking us around last year too
by keephopealive on Jun 14, 2008 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions
just looked at last year's results
I was remembering them taking 2 of 3 during our late May swoon. We made Boof Bonser look like Cy Young one game.

Ned looks like he's going to cry
he’s actually making me feel sorry for him – oh wait, he’s a multi-millionaire, never mind
