So I want to take a second to talk about Lindsay Gulin
Obviously he is a non prospect at the age of 31 but boy is he fun to watch. I was able to catch some of his game a few weeks back against Memphis on CSS and it is like watching Moyer pitch only with an even larger array of off speed pitches. His “fastball” is even a few ticks slower than Moyer. I wonder if he could make it as a reliever? His numbers this year against lefties are not too good but an incredibly small sample and he sure looks like he would be tough on them.

He might actually have a reverse split going on
At the risk of being shown up by Jeff when he brings Gulin’s splits from last year: Looking at Gulin’s splits from before the Dodgers sent him into the wilderness after 2003 (I have no idea where he pitched in ‘04/05 before he resurfaced in the indy American Association in 2006), he was better against righties at most stops (OBP is approximate since there’s no HBP and SF data):
1999 St. Paul Saints (indy Northern League), 3.18 ERA in 102.0 IP:
vs. LHB: 29.0 IP, .266/.355/.385
vs. RHB: 73.0 IP, .212/.297/.349
1999 Daytona Cubs (A+ Florida State League), 0.00 ERA in 13.2 IP:
vs. LHB: 3.0 IP, .111/.200/.111
vs. RHB: 10.2 IP, .167/.286/.167
2000 Daytona Cubs (A+ Florida State League), 2.46 ERA in 109.2 IP:
vs. LHB: 21.2 IP, .217/.260/.319
vs. RHB: 88.0 IP, .239/.321/.356
2000 West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (AA Southern League), 4.99 ERA in 52.1 IP:
vs. LHB: 8.2 IP, .378/.477/.730
vs. RHB: 43.2 IP, .216/.314/.333
2001 Jacksonville Suns (AA Southern League), 2.64 ERA in 126.1 IP:
vs. LHB: 24.1 IP, .306/.346/.449
vs. RHB: 102.0 IP, .257/.327/.380
2002 Jacksonville Suns (AA Southern League), 2.64 ERA in 61.1 IP:
vs. LHB: 18.0 IP, .275/.306/.304
vs. RHB: 43.1 IP, .217/.280/.329
2002 Las Vegas 51s (AAA Pacific Coast League), 4.98 ERA in 68.2 IP:
vs. LHB: 17.0 IP, .238/.294/.413
vs. RHB: 51.2 IP, .310/.372/..481
2003 Las Vegas 51s (AAA Pacific Coast League), 4.85 ERA in 154.0 IP:
vs. LHB: 36.0 IP, .295/.344/.459
vs. RHB: 118.0 IP, .247/.326/.382
Overall, across all five years:
vs. LHB: 157.2 IP, .277/.334/.417, 2.97 BB/9, 5.19 K/9, 1.75 K/BB, 1.38 WHIP
vs. RHB: 530.1 IP, .243/.321/.371, 3.84 BB/9, 9.11 K/9, 2.38 K/BB, 1.33 WHIP

great, thanks
Good article, too. Intriguingly it even says that he’s patterned his style after Jamie Moyer’s.

Thanks for that stuff guys
Great work. I mean Gulin has kind of been hot recently but I think the chances of him being called up are slim to none. Russell was hot and got the call and has performed quite well but I doubt that Gulin would be given that chance as he hasn’t done it in the show before.

he's also going to be hit with a roster squeeze
with riske and gagne coming back, difelice probably won’t last, and somebody else will get cut, too. Add in a likely pitching acquisition at the deadline and it’s tough to see a spot opening up for gulin, even if he was the #1 option in Nashville.
Also, cheese.

True
It seems like with the lack of pitching GMs complain about all the time guys like Gulin might get a look but it rarely seems to happen. Just trot out the corpse of Sidney Ponson for a few more years instead.

with guys like Ponson
there’s always the ready-made excuse “he’s been effective at the major league level before, and we were hoping he could get back to that at least for a stretch” (and heck, Texas pretty much did get that with Ponson). Meanwhile Gulin et al. don’t even get that first look that might eventually get them second, third etc. looks.

Lincoln
In back tracking and looking into Gulin I ended up on the Lincoln Saltdogs website. Cruising the roster I came across an interesting conncection back to the Brewers in that it is now the home of Dustin Yount. Obviously Dustin hasn’t made much progress since his selection by the Orioles back in 2001 he is still playing baseball. Here is the link to his current bio.

And he's doing pretty well in the early going, too
Currently hitting .307/.403/.535 in 114 ABs.

Ryan Trytten
The Saltdogs also have Ryan Trytten, who was drafted by the Brewers back in 2000 and spent three years in the system.
He's extremely quick and good.

...and they also have a pitcher named Daryl Arreola
He’s six feet tall—that’s a big Arreola.
He's extremely quick and good.

He must have a brother because they usually come in pairs ;-)

Not his brother
but maybe his bro.
