Game Thread #70: Blue Jays (35-36) at Brewers (36-33)

These Blue Jays can pitch.  Dustin McGowan is the guy Doug Melvin really wanted instead of Zach Jackson (and rightfully so), and he's really coming into his own at age 25.  Manny Parra ain't so bad, either.

Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

I know stupid movies all too well.

Casino Dealer: 17.
Number Two: Hit me.
Casino Dealer: You have 17, sir.
Number Two: I like to live dangerously.
Casino Dealer: [Hit for four] :21. Very good, sir.
[to Austin]
Casino Dealer: :5.
Austin Powers: I’ll stay.
Casino Dealer: I suggest you hit, sir.
Austin Powers: I also like to live dangerously.
Casino Dealer: 20 beat your 5 sir. I’m sorry, sir.
Austin Powers: Well I must admit, cards aren’t my bag, baby.

Mench!

In the lineup, batting fifth for the Blue Jays. Overbay is seventh – hopefully Uecker doesn’t screw up and call him Obermueller like he would when both those guys were on the Brewers. Too bad Hart’s not leading off or both teams would have really tall #1 hitters.

oh, wait…

Yost is probably waiting for his turn in the order. if he pulls him out early, he’ll do a double-switch involving hart as per usual.

I’d like to say no, but you’ve got Yost on your side.

hmmm

maybe Yost will keep him in anyway

it’s not a save situation™ afterall, assuming you discount the 3-inning save which Yost already does.

totally unexpected

Yost pulled Parra before his turn in the order. AND left Hart in the game.

It sure looks like Manny has found his groove

and a little confidence after a somewhat rocky start to the year.

I was really surprised to see

that he was hitting .326, I haven’t been looking at the Rays all that much this year, but I might have to start watching. That and Grant Ball-Four is back up on the big league team, and doing decent somehow. We still win though getting McClung for him

On-field delay

streaker?

I remember being an usher at County Stadium in the bleachers on one weekend game. I had a couple of “jumpers.”

I pulled one back (prob decoy). The other two went behind my back when I was dealing with the first.

On Friday night

I was up by Bernie, and a guy ran into left field by Delmon Young. He got taken down hard with about 4 or 5 big knees to the side. Not worth it. Especially with Young out there, I’d be more afraid of him!

yeah

one of the guys that went over the wall looked absolutely stunned when he hit the ground and sat there for about 30 seconds before taking off.

It took the groundscrew guys a bit to react to the call as well, but they dealt with the problem before the guy made it much of anywhere;)

thoughts on our starters?

So, what do people expect? Somehow, Mcclung, Parra and Suppan can’t keep this up, right? Suppan, for sure, we know what we’re dealing with. Is this a fast learning curve for Manny and Mcclung?

by keephopealive on Jun 17, 2008 9:23 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't expect them all to pitch as well as they have

But I also see no reason for significant drop-offs. I’m assuming scouting reports will get out on McClung’s new technique allowing for a small but not catastrophic change.

We all knew Parra has got some fine stuff coming into the season, and I think he will only get more confident as the season goes on. That being said, he still is young and will most likely hit some bumps on the road. There also may end up being an issue on the number of IP if he continues to go 7 deep.

I’m not sure what to think about Soup. I just hope he can continue to do what he does and anything above and beyond is a bonus.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

better than expected

Soup and Mcclung have definitely been better than expected. Manny on average has been about what we’ve expected, but his last few starts (mulligan for Minute Maid Park) have been Gallardo-like.
