Game Thread #71: Blue Jays (35-37) at Brewers (37-33)
If you only watch one game this week, this is the one to watch. Shaun Marcum isn't exactly a household name, but he's among the AL leaders in just about every pitching category, and at the top of the list for ERA. Ben Sheets is right up there, too, making this one of the best pitching matchups of the year.
Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview. I'm not sure what's cooler: that Scott Rolen has a .500 OPS against Sheets, or that Ryan Braun has a 5.000 OPS against Brian Wolfe.
Go Brewers!

lineups
Counsell leading off, playing second, Hardy back in there, Branyan still in there (big surprise).
Weird: Brad Wilkerson is leading off for the Jays.
Also, cheese.
Does Branyan's batting stance....
....look almost exactly like Overbay’s? Pay attention. I think it does.
"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"
I thought it...
... looked like a left-handed version of Tony Batista’s stance.
My non-embarrassing thoughts on the Brewers:
Two Fisted Slopper
that would make sense
in terms of results, for sure.

Maybe you and I can have a friendly mock debate on the topic…hehe

In case anyone is wondering
I’m waiting to add the 2008 draftees until they get Baseball Cube pages (or I might switch to BBRef Minors—any preferences?) and MLS pages. I think that I’m going to draw up a ranking, too.
He's extremely quick and good.
I vote for BR Minors
And I should have MLS pages-at least for guys that have appeared in a game-up over the next few days.

Branyan

He's extremely quick and good.
Let's hope it's ash
...with all the maple fragmentation that’s gone on, a mighty weapon would be felled
So...Marcum...
looks ok, but is almost certainly not as good as his league-leading ERA.
FIP is ~3.70, BABIP is down around .230 (well below career average). Still good, but certainly not Sheets good.
Also, cheese.
Waiting until after there's a lead to trash-talk the opponents now?
By the way, Branyan now has a 5.000 OPS against two members of the Blue Jays’ pitching staff.

that's crazy
Ludwick is really having a year. Pat the bat is as well. This is a contract year I think.
bk's comment above
reminded me to process yesterday’s games for minor league splits.
a) short-season leagues make this take a LOT longer
b) before today, there were 11,784 players in the database…after today (and by extension, by later this week, when all the pitchers have gotten into games) there will be a LOT more.

This is interesting
Braun is putting up a .956 OPS in June, with a .225 BABIP.

Still needs to work on selectivity
Just think, if he improves his strike zone vision, his hot zone vision, and improves his ability to foul off the rest…

Torres is the man
So, carrying along the McClung analogy, doesn’t Torres mean “Son of Bull”
Well, I thought the "es" and "ez" was the Spanish "Mc"
So, Rodriguez would be son of Rodrigo, etc. Of course, I have only a five word Spanish vocabulary, so I’m probably wrong
