Game Thread #72: Blue Jays (35-38) at Brewers (38-33)

Last night was the best against the best...now it's the worst against the worst.  "Worst" comes in different flavors though.  A.J. Burnett has been ok this year, striking out a batter an inning to go with his 4.90 ERA.  Dave Bush has been considerably less ok.

The Brewers will go for the sweep this afternoon with a healthy David Riske on board.  Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

That's borderline NSFW

Yikes

Is that actually him?

Because it looks enough like him to be believable.
Just kidding, but he does look like him.
We should be warned before we have to look at stuff like that.

He only gave up 3 ER's in his last outing...

...I agree that he will do well today, but I still hope Ned Yost isn’t afraid to take him out if he gets into trouble. The bullpen is well-rested, if they warm up a little earlyer than normal, it shouldn’t be a problem.

A theory about the Overworked Bullpen™

Maybe they all have side jobs with the team or something, and the reporters/broadcasters know that. They might come early and weed Miller Park, restock the concession stands, and watch to make sure the IRS agents can’t get near Prince.

It’s very tiring.

He hasn't pitched poorly,

I think his losses are more a matter of luck than of pitching. Kinda reminds me of what happened to Capuano last season.

I don’t know, but if the Brewers were his only offer, he wouldn’t care to go through that again, esp. if he thinks he’s a better starter than Bush.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jun 19, 2008 1:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He originally accepted the assignment

because he believed a trade was in the works. For whatever reason, none of the rumored trades went through. The fact that he changed his mind about the assignment and then immediately signed with the Brewers makes me think that it’s the only offer he got and he was going to take the major league sure thing.

by morineko on Jun 19, 2008 1:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He did start out as a starter. Sinkerballers are supposed to need more use to get good action.

lineout, yes…

from the article
When Wawrzasek was in for a pre-draft work out, Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik showed his name tag to the high schooler and said “You and me.”

also:

Tony LaCava, the Jays assistant GM, and Gord Ash, form Jays GM and assistant GM with the Milwaukee Brewers have been mentioned as possible candidates to replace Bill Bavasi, who was fired this week by the Seattle Mariners.

I had heard LaCava, but not Ash.

I think I would rather give up Ash then Jack Z.

He has interviewed around and I would like him doing our draft for the next 5 years thank you very much.

Visit my baseball blog ...or else!

by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:32 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no question

I don’t doubt that Ash is a good guy to have around, and that he and Doug have a good relationship, but it seems that every team has a designated ex-GM in charge of contracts and that kind of stuff, and I’m not at all sure one is much better than the other.

(as long as we don’t replace him with Bavasi, anyway.)

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jun 19, 2008 1:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Three-year extension for Counsell!

(Just getting ahead of the Bavasi hiring…)

by Zeyes on Jun 19, 2008 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah you said it

It sure seems like Ash helps but is much more replaceable. Jack Z. has a proven track record of drafting well in the early part of the draft at least. Teams like Seattle are probably going to have some nice high draft picks so you would think that would be a natural fit. It will be interesting to see if Jack can keep up the success in the later parts of the first round and the sandwich picks. I have confidence in him but less track record there.

Visit my baseball blog ...or else!

by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

would Jack Z.

make a good assistant GM? could he still have enough time for the draft thing and have an assistant do most of the GM-related duties?
