Game Thread #72: Blue Jays (35-38) at Brewers (38-33)
Last night was the best against the best...now it's the worst against the worst. "Worst" comes in different flavors though. A.J. Burnett has been ok this year, striking out a batter an inning to go with his 4.90 ERA. Dave Bush has been considerably less ok.
The Brewers will go for the sweep this afternoon with a healthy David Riske on board. Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

...I agree that he will do well today, but I still hope Ned Yost isn’t afraid to take him out if he gets into trouble. The bullpen is well-rested, if they warm up a little earlyer than normal, it shouldn’t be a problem.

When Wawrzasek was in for a pre-draft work out, Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik showed his name tag to the high schooler and said “You and me.”

Tony LaCava, the Jays assistant GM, and Gord Ash, form Jays GM and assistant GM with the Milwaukee Brewers have been mentioned as possible candidates to replace Bill Bavasi, who was fired this week by the Seattle Mariners.

He has interviewed around and I would like him doing our draft for the next 5 years thank you very much.
by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions
no question
I don’t doubt that Ash is a good guy to have around, and that he and Doug have a good relationship, but it seems that every team has a designated ex-GM in charge of contracts and that kind of stuff, and I’m not at all sure one is much better than the other.
(as long as we don’t replace him with Bavasi, anyway.)
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Jun 19, 2008 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah you said it
It sure seems like Ash helps but is much more replaceable. Jack Z. has a proven track record of drafting well in the early part of the draft at least. Teams like Seattle are probably going to have some nice high draft picks so you would think that would be a natural fit. It will be interesting to see if Jack can keep up the success in the later parts of the first round and the sandwich picks. I have confidence in him but less track record there.
by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions
would Jack Z.
make a good assistant GM? could he still have enough time for the draft thing and have an assistant do most of the GM-related duties?
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 19, 2008 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions
interesting question...
Likewise, how much draft-related time would he really still have as the Mariners’ GM? There’s got to be a boatload of other high-priority stuff to fix in that organization…
from what I can gather
GMs do almost nothing but draft stuff for a week or two leading up to the event, and are thinking about it for weeks before that. But of course, they aren’t nearly as involved with the minutia, esp in lower rounds, as the scouting team is.
I don’t think the state of the org and all that needs fixing would have a whole lot to do with that—in an org in shambles, everybody would focus more on drafting/player development, compared to, say, the yankees or cubs, where things are pretty much set, but there’s always big league stuff to deal with.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Jun 19, 2008 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions
If I was Jack Z
I would stick with what I do best. He’s revered as a scouting director, so why not just ask to get paid as a GM and keep doing what you do well? He may not have any aspirations to be in the limelight and have to deal with reporters and all the other nonsense GMs have to handle.

So BK...
Any idea what is taking so long with Lawrie? It sure would be nice to at least get him some instruction with our guys before he goes to play for Canada.
And Lintz...
All this “he’s going to sign any second” without official word is making me remember the Jemile Weeks scenario from a couple seasons ago. Is that a done deal?
by Et tu Brewte on Jun 19, 2008 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions
FWIW
An agent that reps many of the Brewers’ minor leaguers has said that Weeks was never going to sign. He said that the Weeks family threw out an impossibly high number and the Brewers “shockingly” matched it. Then Jemile asked for more.
If that’s true, I don’t know where all the “he’s about to sign” stuff that was floated around came from.
He's extremely quick and good.
Nope, haven't heard anything
I wouldn’t worry though. Neither he nor Lawrie made any noise whatsoever about not signing before the draft (as opposed to Alex Meyer, Tim Melville, Sonny Gray, etc), so there’s no realistic chance they won’t sign; the Brewers will put up the necessary cash.
He's extremely quick and good.
That is some really interesting stuff
I was pretty excited about the possibility to get Jemile signed. He should would have looked good right about now.
by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions
I was watching the CWS recently
There was a sharply hit ball to second that got past the Miami 2B and I thought it was an odd-looking play until I saw “WEEKS” on his jersey…and then I understood. :)
(Now someone will tell me Jemile is a great defender or something…)
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Like Rickie, Jemile apparently has good range but isn't a great overall defender.
Quote from the A’s to the contrary:
“We think he can come along quickly,” [Scouting Director Eric] Kubota said. “He’s a polished college player and we think he’s a solid defender right now.”link
He's extremely quick and good.
The World Junior Championships start in late July and end 8/3
I have half a thought that he won’t sign until those are over. He’ll be playing with wood bats still, and obviously still playing ball, so I don’t think the team would get too upset. That is purely speculation, though. The signing deadline is 8/15, BTW.
He's extremely quick and good.
Yeah but why wait?
Wouldn’t it only help him to get some instruction from our guys on catching? Maybe it isn’t a big deal but it just seems like everything is pretty much set money wise, why wait?
by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't know
Maybe Lawrie wants to do it that way, though he also wants to play for the Olympic team (of which he isn’t assured a spot on, so it might be a moot issue). Like I said, pure speculation on my part.
He's extremely quick and good.
Something else that just occurred to me
I don’t know if he’s playing catcher for the Juniors team. If so, maybe the Brewers will just let him finish up playing third or whatever before instructing him on the tools of ignorance.
He's extremely quick and good.

Here’s a blog post discussing it
It’s not a terrible idea, if he’s got his depression issues fixed. He wouldn’t be worth as much as an ace like Lincecum, but it would take quite a bit to get him. The situation is kinda like the Josh Hamilton/Reds deal last year.
I don't think it was depression
At least, not primarily. He has social phobia, which might certainly lead to depression. By all accounts he’s still a pretty reserved dude even after treatment.
He's extremely quick and good.
True
Not depression, social anxiety disorder… similar to Ricky williams on the Dolphins… wouldn’t take instruction well either from coaches… but all of that seems ironed out… took some time off and figured it all out… my uncle actually was his psycologist in KC.

You got to wonder about the Brewers effort level in the 4th inning.
I mean, they didn’t even score.

It sure is a good time to be a Brewer fan
Remember when we were like 4 games behind the Astros? That changed quickly.
I remember when 6.5 games back seemed like a lot
Now it’s child’s play!

Well, nobody's perfect.
Especially not Dave Bush. The fact that he’s gone 5 innings at less than 90 pitches is more than I’d ever have hoped out of the guy.
Who is this guy pitching?
I get back from the gym, log on to check the score, and see that there’s this “Bush” guy with line of 5IP, 0R, 0H. Can we get some more of him?
Usually guys want less bush

I wonder how long Ned will let Bush go today?
Only 73 pitches so maybe a complete game? Can we start thinking about going to 11 pitchers yet?
Yes

Dilliard has 2 innings in like forever. It sure seems like he is a big league pitcher or can but but do we need him right now?
by dixieflatline on Jun 19, 2008 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions
you know that as soon as we go to 11
a) a pitcher would get injured in the 2nd inning of a start
b) we’d have a 15-inning game
(this would happen on back to back days)
...and we’d hear about for the rest of the season, after a couple of emergency moves to get us back to 13.

Laporta
Rotoworld reports that Laporta is day to day with a bruised back. They also report that Gagne is coming back on June 27th and Ned says he will be the setup man.
Getting back to Grienke for a minute
6 innings 2 hits one walk one run. Royals 2-1 now. I know the cards are without Pujols but that still is impressive. He is hitting 96 on the PITCHf/x gun too. I am not saying he is going to be on the trading block but if he were I would go hard after him. Seems like he and Maddux would be a match made in heaven.
