Brian FUentes????

the rumor is that fuentes is on the trading block. I say we pick him up for a top guy like LaPorta. What ch'all think? We need him!

"The Yankees And Brian Fuentes
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post advises:

Keep an eye on the Yankees' interest in Brian Fuentes, whom they have liked for years. New York needs a reliable late-inning setup man to replace Joba Chamberlain, who joins the rotation Tuesday.

Keep in mind that Renck is not saying discussions have occurred recently.  But Fuentes would certainly be a nice addition for the Yanks.  He has a 2.78 ERA and 2.63 K/BB in 22.2 innings this year.

Surely the Rockies are looking for a young player or two in return.  The trades of Octavio Dotel and Eric Gagne last year might be comparables.  Dotel required Kyle Davies, a promising pitcher who had not experienced much big league success.  The Gagne package was headed by raw prospect Engel Beltre, and also included useful MLB-ready pieces in Kason Gabbard and David Murphy."

What do we do about pitching??!?

What do we do about pitching??!? This is a perfect opp. to beef up our shitty bullpen/closer situation.

Step one would probably be to calm down

Step two is realizing trading six years of Matt LaPorta for four months of Brian Fuentes is going to be a net loss every time.

LaPorta is untouchable

Or at least should be unless he is part of a deal to bring in a Lincecum, Hamels or some other pre-arby ace. He shouldn’t even be discussed as part of a deal for a 32 year old reliever.

Unless your name is Brian Sabean or Sal Bando.

I assumed he was joking.

Is he serious?

It appears so

Which is suprising, because I don’t think even a million of Rollie’s mustaches typing on a million intertubes could come up with a worse idea than trading LaPorta for a reliever.

At what price?

If they will take Tony Gwynn Jr, Brad Nelson or Hernan Irabarren(or two of the three) for four months of bullpen help, then it’s not a terrible deal. Those are guys who are major league ready, or as ready as they will ever be but are blocked at the major league level. They are organizational ‘spare parts’ and should be traded to get back the pieces that can’t be produced in house. LaPorta is an expected cornerstone of the organization for the next 6-10 years, and should not be moved unless they are getting back a similar cornerstone. Given the flux the roster will have as players hit arbitration, everyone that is producing at AA needs to be viewed as similar to LaPorta in organizational need.

To answer your ‘where do we put him’, you can trade Hart after this year and get a sh!t-load in return if there is no expectation that Hart can play CF everyday. Far more than 4 months of a 32 year old reliever.

thinking exactly what I'm thinking

The Rockies are severely short of…well, everything, but especially uninjured middle infielders.

I think Laporta will be sick… dont get me wrong. But where do we put him?

“The question becomes: where does he fit in? LaPorta is not a good defender – he will likely be relegated to first base or a corner outfield position in the majors, seeing as Designated Hitter is not an option with the Brew Crew. The Brewers have Prince Fielder entrenched at first and Ryan Braun and Corey Hart locked into the outfield. Thus, there seem to be only two solutions:”

Yup.

Braun has the arm and athleticism to play right with a little more experience tracking down balls, so LaPorta can play LF.

If you do trade LaPorta

Wouldn’t you want to get more than four months out of a reliever for him? Wouldn’t a player who will be around for a few years be a lot more preferable?

la porta for four months would be stupid

la porta for four months would be stupid! i just feel like the crew needs a catalyst in there bull pen, a for sure closer or marmol type to give the team cofidence at the end of the game. The La Porta might have been an impulse comment… but we gotta do somthing!

marmol

has an ERA of 9.00 this year (in his last one appearance). Are you sure that is the kind of reliever we’d want?

It seems you are so frantic to make a trade...

You are not looking to make sure you use the correct their, spelling the word something without an e, and not mentioning the right names.

Now my typing and spelling are never perfect, but a sloppy idea compounded with sloppy writing makes for a blogpost that hurts my head.

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

marmol

Marmol has a 1.75 era this year with 54 k’s. I would love marmol as a closer! 1,000 apologies for my illiteracy!

Guys, guys, guys

Easy. We can trade LaPorta for Fuentes, no problem. After all, we’ve got eight more!

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 2, 2008 5:27 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

But

what if we need 8 Fuenteses?

Nonsense

Without them, how could we possibly make it all the way through the desert?
