Game Thread #74: Orioles (38-34) at Brewers (39-34)
Daniel Cabrera vs. Seth McClung. Cabrera has more of a track record, but he's still something of an enigma. On any given night, he could dominate, or he could walk every other batter. I still kind of feel the same way about McClung, though with every start, I'm a little less nervous.
Game time is 6:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview. You'll be glad to know that McClung has faced Melvin Mora more than he has faced any other Oriole, and our boy has owned him.
Go Brewers!

Hmm
Given Cabrera’s season stats so far I’ll predict Branyan’s line for today as 1-1 with a homer and two walks…
as opposed to...
homer, walk, and two strikeouts?
there are really only so many possibilities.
Also, cheese.

Nervous
Sheets – even his bad games he usually wins, so no nerves
Parra – low, he really seems to be getting in the groove, a bad game for him is likely to be a lot of pitches and a short outing rather than a kerblowee blowout
Suppan – I was pretty confident, but what was that last night? Did anyone hear anything other than Ned’s “he just didn’t have it”? I guess that’s three clinkers for the season, expect the good but not surprised by the bad
Bush – I’ll be nervous through the extension that Melvin will sign him to and forget to announce publicly, but he’s been a lot better lately. Might put him in Suppan territory, expecting good but not surprised by bad – well, maybe after another good outing. It still feels like a tease.
And the big Scot, Seth McClung AKA Chuckie – I’m still nervous and if you asked me before any start prior to the last, I would say he seems like he has a nice tool set for a quality reliever. After the velocity drop on his fastball that comes with starting, I would guess that he would have a much harder time. He’s shown me to be wrong so far, but I still go into the night wondering how he’ll do.
Do go gentle into that good night,
Rage not against the dying of the light.
He's extremely quick and good.
Ned repeated on the pregame show that it just wasn't Suppan's night
I too was very nervous about McClung but I am feeling a lot better about him. He has the tools to be a starter and I didn’t think that was the case.

MikeMark and Villy soaked up most of the damage
I’d think everyone else would be available.
He's extremely quick and good.
Bedard is striking out a batter an inning and has a low-4's ERA, but he isn't doing well
Meanwhile, Adam Jones and his .680 OPS is doing pretty well.
He's extremely quick and good.
Don't worry, the MASN guys haven't mentioned it
Just the “he’s retired x batters so far” stuff.
(yes, EI has stuck me with the Baltimore feed. Bad cameras and no McClung closeups)
You know what I just realized?
90 Minute IPA tastes a bit like eggnog.
He's extremely quick and good.
useless between innings trivia
The Baltimore Orioles began as, get this, the Milwaukee Brewers. They played at a park on Lloyd street which is on the other side of the highway from where Miller Park is.
The park was between 16th and 18th on Lloyd
Miller Park is west of there.
He's extremely quick and good.
Dice-K did my Fantasy team in today.
I shouldn’t have started him but I was that desperate, even picked up McClung. Good thing he had Contreras going today.
I dropped Matsuzaka for McClung 3 weeks ago
It’s an idea whose time has come. Matsuzaka needs to find out where his control has hid itself.
Me too
and I don’t even have a fantasy baseball team.

He ain't heavy

Meanwhile, in Brevard
Alex Periard’s doing pretty well, continuing to hint at his strikeout potential.
He's extremely quick and good.
Ump behind the plate has been very consistent.
I don’t see many games on TV but he is doing a great job.
Is jihad here?
He’s probably taking the SATs soon. Complete this analogy: Kendall:cat::Estrada:?
He's extremely quick and good.

Very Nice
Feels good to come back from the park and have a 3-0 lead

Well considering all the whining from fans
about the umps behind the plate, this guy has been right on his strike zone set in the 1st inning all night. I only get WMLV games so I guess I got one of the good ones behind the plate tonight.
well..
according to the gameday ball placement, when the pitch is borderline, he’s favoring baltimore.

Man, West Virginia is just getting hammered
13-0; they’ve only had 3 baserunners. At this point I’m just pulling for Gindl to hit a double or something.
He's extremely quick and good.
So this McClung guy is ok
How many more starts is he gonna get before the All-Star pitchers are named?
ERA down to a cool 3.50
85 pitches so if 100 is the real max maybe one more inning. Bottom part of the order coming up.
by dixieflatline on Jun 21, 2008 7:45 PM CDT up reply actions
If he burns through the 7th, I wouldn't put it past Ned to throw him back out in the 8th

vaguely related
I saw Gina Gershon in a stage play today.
Her accent was a little shaky, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.

That was just on
the Universal HD channel. I was shocked to find that Gina Gershon was less sexy than Jennifer Tilly.

Oscar Salazar?!
I was going to make a joke about him, of all people, hitting a walk-off homer recently. Apparently he heard my thoughts and is now out to ruin me.
He's extremely quick and good.
Heart of the order for the O's inthe 8th
by dixieflatline on Jun 21, 2008 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions
i guess the point is
if mota struggles, torres can go for 1+ innings.
if you put them in the other order, Torres and Shouse are already used, leaving you with Stetter.
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 21, 2008 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions
also...
due to the double-switch, it seems likely that shouse will be out to start the 8th.
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 21, 2008 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions
That may be true, but it's a bug, not a feature
Mota will pitch the ninth because that’s when closers pitch, something that will never change because saves are now part of the salary arbitration process.
He's extremely quick and good.
i guess
because you want 2 runners on for Braun, not just 1 after the DP:P

Braun has walked in three straight games
Trenni must really be working wonders.
He's extremely quick and good.
He only walked in TWO straight games one other time this year
He did walk in three games in a row once last year, though, July 13-15. A walk tomorrow sets a personal record.
He's extremely quick and good.
Flag
you were saying this ump is consistent.
Look at the pitches to Fielder this inning, and Hart a couple ago, and then at what they were calling for McClung…
Cuzzi is definitely a Cub fan.

We should just get morineko's grandma to take care of LaPorta's grandpa
That’ll get him back in the lineup faster.
He's extremely quick and good.
i'm going to regret ever asking this of you
but who is morineko and what’s the deal with his grandmother?
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 21, 2008 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Shouse and Torres
they make up for T-bow and Gagne self-destructing
At least it's close already
no need for Torres to put on two baserunners to make it interesting before he retires the side this game…
in other important news...
Fresno State is leading in the 6th. If they win, they are in the finals of the CWS against Georgia. It would be a pretty much unprecedented underdog story.
Also, cheese.
Fresno
beat North Carolina the other day… I care because Rob Wooten pitched like 4 innings. I wanted to see what his velocity was like, but he was only throwing curves- or so it seemed.
so Jeff
does UC Davis have any prospects? Or Cal State Sacramento?
I’m sure Cal Berkeley has a few.
