Game Thread #76: Brewers (41-34) at Braves (38-39)

It's still a little early to get wrapped up in these things, but while there's still quite a bit of space between the Brewers and the Cubs, the Crew is only two games behind the wild-card leading Cardinals.  It's only a matter of time...

Tonight's matchup is Ben Sheets and Jo-Jo Reyes.  Reyes has been solid this year, including a seven-inning, one-run performance last time these two teams met.  Sheets didn't perform as well against the Braves, but he did register a quality start, and he did get the win--just like he did in his previous four starts against the Braves.

Game time is 6:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

whatever the game simulator is on cbs

it has the Brewers favorites to win this game (57/43 I believe), even though it has Atlanta leading in all stats categories they display and it’s being played in Atlanta.

First time I’ve seen that since week 1 of the season.

Ben Sheets

Jo-Jo Reyes

weeks, cameron, and hall?

okay…i can see hall over branyan given the leftie on the mound, but I think I’d rather have kapler in to start this one (over cam). I guess we have to give rickie a chance to prove he’s back at 100%, but I would have rather had him on extended rehab in AAA than taking up a slot on the ML roster.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 5:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd rather have Weeks at second

Than Dillon.

agreed

but is there no one better that can do it at AAA or AA? Ibrarren hasn’t really been impressive.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 6:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Better than Weeks?

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 23, 2008 6:36 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Delicious HD!

Yay.. HD! Hopefully they cut to Trenni more then Yost though.

by SgtClueLs on Jun 23, 2008 6:01 PM CDT   0 recs

Trenni

isn’t particularly cute

by James Stanley Cocanower on Jun 23, 2008 6:14 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Bah..

No offense to Craig Coushan but I’d much rather enjoy some HD Trenni then HD Craig.

Shift, too bad

He's extremely quick and good.

Heh

Mike Rivera couldn’t keep up with Mike Cameron? No way.

good day

to make up 0.5 game. No one else in our div is playing today. Cubs and Cards, et al are off.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 6:37 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh my

Sounds like Rock and Sutton are eluding to trading some prospects for Sabthia.

I like the little wave they do with the glove. Coco Crisp had a good one yesterday.

by ol Pete on Jun 23, 2008 6:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

those two reminded me

of playing racketball yesterday. Barely over my racket hitting the back wall, then under it and past me on the way back.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 7:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

aww

they took out their starter

I was hoping for more damage first.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 6:56 PM CDT   0 recs

I wonder if Cox uses the same phrases as Ned

“Jo-jo just didn’t have it tonight” predicted for the postgame.

Sucks

That was a bullet.

by battlekow on Jun 23, 2008 6:59 PM CDT   0 recs

too bad

at least he hit it hard. Hope things turn around for him soon….

Me Too

By which I mean I hope he “turns around” to the other side of the plate and changes his name to Branyan…

4-0 after 2 1/2

What are the chances the Braves battle back to a one-run loss?

Whoa

Someone Stumped The Jay

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

by MadJimiBrewha on Jun 23, 2008 7:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Don’t give me credit for that one. I bow before his research and internet skills. I just don’t want to treat him like Ready Reference.

Awesome McCalvy Yost "Bashing" from his latest mailbag
I’m glad to hear that they won’t move Eric Gagne back to the closer role. But didn’t Doug Melvin or Ned Yost blame his problems [in 2007] on the fact that he was a setup man in Boston when they gave him the $10 million contract?
—Andrew D., San Diego, Calif.

Yes, or at least Yost did. He spoke over the offseason with Sox manager Terry Francona (an old 1985 Expos teammate), and both men agreed that Gagne’s struggles had at least something to do with the fact that he was out of the routine he’d held since 2002, when he started closing games for the Dodgers. It’s difficult for laypeople to understand why routine is so important for closers, Yost explained at the time, but it just is.

As I noted on Thursday, Yost has changed his tune. “If you’re comfortable in the ninth, you’ll be comfortable anywhere,” Yost said, adding that Gagne’s experience in the second half of last season in Boston should be a help.

by jihad on Jun 23, 2008 7:02 PM CDT   0 recs

Yost and Francona as teammates… hmmmm.

by ol Pete on Jun 23, 2008 7:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

At one point,

Terry Francona was my brother’s favorite player, so a buddy & I made a team for Pure Stat Baseball. The team wasn’t bad, but we should have found Yost to be our C.

by kgaul on Jun 23, 2008 8:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Rats!

I got a little ahead of myself. The team was completely made up of Francona’s.

Mike Rivera

How did he get two errors as a catcher this year? The guy hardly ever plays.

Catcher's interference?

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 23, 2008 7:07 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nah

I guess one was throwing the ball away when Hanley Ramirez stole second off him on May 8 and when Miguel Tejada reached first after a strikeout on June 12.

by ol Pete on Jun 23, 2008 7:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Interesting

I was just checking out the stats for Sheets over the last couple years. His go/ao has taken a bit of a jump this year.

01: 1.41
02: 1.42
03: 1.05
04: 1.01
05: 0.75
06: 0.87
07: 0.75
08: 1.20

by MadJimiBrewha on Jun 23, 2008 7:38 PM CDT   0 recs

perhaps a stupid question

but, if go/ao mean ground outs per fly out, what does the “a” in “ao” stand for?

by Oakland Brewer Fan on Jun 23, 2008 7:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

all?

in which case how can it be over 1?

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 7:55 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

air

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 23, 2008 7:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

ahhh

I never would have guessed air out. Weird. Wonder who decided to use that word instead of the traditional term “fly out”

by Oakland Brewer Fan on Jun 23, 2008 8:03 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Maybe it's a catch-all term

To lump together pop ups and fly outs.

question

who is sheets trying to sacrifice over?

that guy has no clue at the plate

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 23, 2008 7:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Heh

If he’s going to make an out, he might as well practice for when he does have to sacrifice someone over. :)

You have no concept.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
