Latest news on Lawrie

It appears as if speculation that Lawrie would play in the World Junior Championship before signing with the Brewers was correct, and indeed, he will probably play for the Canadian Olympic team too:

If he is selected for the Olympics in addition to the juniors tournament, Lawrie would get six weeks of top-notch, wooden-bat International competition. He likely would travel from Edmonton to North Carolina around Aug. 4 to catch the end of Team Canada’s “training camp” against Team USA, then would head to Asia for the Olympics. At some point along the line, Lawrie would have to pass a physical and sign his Brewers contract.

Major League teams face an Aug. 15 deadline to sign their Draft picks. Last summer, the first year the signing deadline was in place, many of the top high school picks waited until the final hours to sign, and that could be the case again this year. Unsigned players of interest to the Lawrie camp include No. 15 overall selection Ethan Martin, a high school right-hander from Georgia.

He's extremely quick and good.

Can he sign and then play in the Olympics?

Or is he ineligible once he’s a pro?

by warwick5s on Jun 25, 2008 10:11 PM CDT   0 recs

yes he can

According to the article bk linked to (buried toward the bottom), professional players are allowed in the Olympics, as long as they are not on the 25-man roster.

It would be sweet to have another Olympic champ in the organization, especially if Sheets leaves (even if Lawrie wins it with the Canucks).

by Oakland Brewer Fan on Jun 25, 2008 10:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would think he could

afterall, the US does it for Basketball and many countries do so for Hockey.

I think the only remaining Olympic stipulation is that no one can get paid for playing in the Olympics themselves.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 25, 2008 10:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Can he sign and then play in the World Junior Championships?

I’ve heard he can play in the Olympics after he signs a contract with the Brewers, but does anything preclude him from signing before the World Junior Championships?

by Bambis_Bombers on Jun 25, 2008 10:16 PM CDT   0 recs

probably

Juniors probably can’t be Pros. At least I remember that being the case for Golf (Woods and Sorenstan)...not that I follow that “sport”

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 25, 2008 10:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

It doesn't really matter

The Juniors end before the signing deadline, so there’s no reason to sign before going, especially if guys like Ethan Martin haven’t signed.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 25, 2008 10:26 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Unless

Unless he manages to hurt himself, and then it will be a bust probably. If only we didn’t trade Will Inmon.

by BrewMaster on Jun 26, 2008 10:29 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Again I have no problem if he is playing in these competitions

I just want him signed. I don’t want to wait until Aug 13th and then have the team and his agent hashing out the details. I am hoping that there is a wink-wink agreement in place and then after the juniors are over he puts pen to paper but it would be very bad to lose our top pick. We need to get him signed.

When Lawrie signs

I’m going to celebrate by buying the red lid on Baseball Canada’s website. It’s steep but I love it.

by John Brew on Jun 26, 2008 12:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't think anyone is concerned about him signing or not

I really wouldn’t worry about it. He’s going to spend the summer playing against top international competition and take a break somewhere in there to sign a 2009 contract, probably. It kind sucks that we won’t get to see him in uniform (how cool was that picture of Odorizzi in his Brewers jersey?) until next year, but for a guy who already handled himself with aplomb against rehabbing Major Leaguers, this isn’t going to negatively impact his development. The team will probably start him at Helena next year, and he’ll tear it up for a few months and then get bumped up to West Virginia, at which point he’s on the same advanced path that Caleb Gindl is, only with a better bat.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 26, 2008 2:16 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You think they'll keep him in extended spring for two months?

I realize that WV would be a pretty steep first mountain to climb for a 19-year old, but as polished a hitter as he’ll likely be… It’s not like he’s really going to need that initial confidence boost from ripping up Pioneer League pitching to a 1.100 OPS before a promotion to WV; Lawrie seems plenty confident (and with reason!) already.

by Zeyes on Jun 26, 2008 8:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You could be right

It would just be surprising to see the Brewers give a high school pick his first pro experience at WV. Then again, Lawrie’s ability and circumstances (high-level amateur competition) are unique for a high school pick, as well.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 26, 2008 9:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What would they do with him for the first two months?

Until Helena starts, I mean. Just extended spring training?

Yeah

He’s very raw defensively at catcher. It wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 26, 2008 10:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Lawrie

if he doesn’t sign, we still get pick 15a next year, so it wouldn’t be much of a tragedy

I'll warm up with you anytime

Eric Decker

Decker, better known as a wide receiver than an outfielder, was nevertheless drafted by the Brewers in the 39th round out of Minnesota. I just talked to him, and as expected, there is pretty much zero chance of him signing.

He's extremely quick and good.

everyone else is in order. did he get some other “perks”?

by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 27, 2008 10:53 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He didn't get hosed, Komatsu got extra

Komatsu is good, better than an 8th-round pick.

He's extremely quick and good.

you seem to like Komatsu a lot

care to elaborate? (or point me to where you’ve done so already)

Seth Lintz update

Nashville’s Fox affiliate has a video feature on Lintz; it’s not clear that he’s signed, but I kind of assume so given that there’s no other good reason to do the piece now, a month after the draft. At the very least, Lintz talks like being in the organization is a foregone conclusion, so that’s good news.

He's extremely quick and good.

Joe Scott

Also, as I posted in the Callix a few days back, it looks like 41st-round Fullerton SS Joe Scott is an unofficial draft-and-follow, and might sign if he plays well in his Alaska summer league.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 5, 2008 11:04 AM CDT   0 recs

That article makes it sound like the makings of a good reality show. How about Minor Leagues: the Alaska adventure. Its funny that the host team keeps a stick shift car they let players use and learn on no less.

Lawrie had two three-run homers yesterday
In the first game, Post 7 lost 9-5 to the Langley Blaze as Blaze catcher Brett Lawrie, the 2008 No. 16 overall selection by the Milwaukee Brewers, had two three-run home runs in the game.

Wayne Dedrick (30th-round Alabama HS OF)

He has a college basketball scholarship, and wasn’t expecting to get drafted.

He pulled out of school recently and returned to Alabama, where he is deciding whether to skip college to play professional baseball.

“I really don’t know what I’m going to do,” said Dedrick, who continues to work out, practicing both basketball and baseball with former Hillcrest teammates.

Odorizzi/Frederickson scouting report

Alex Eisenberg at THT with the goods, including video:

Odorizzi has a very short arm action from hand break to when the arm reaches a cocked position; this shortness imparts a sneaky quality to his fastball…the Brewers might want to clean up his arm action-not overhaul it, but make it more efficient…I love Odorizzi’s upside…I love pitchers who are also athletes, and that picture fits Odorizzi…Given the combination of athleticism, three potentially average or better pitches and good command, Odorizzi gives the Brewers excellent value at No. 32.

Grade – B+

I’m not sure what they’re doing at the University of San Francisco, but they seem to excel at finding big left-handed pitchers with poor mechanics and mediocre velocity and turning them into pitchers who can pump out 97-mph fastballs…The mechanics shown in the above video do not generate fastballs in the upper 90s-not even close. Too awkward, too long of an arm action, and too inefficient a chain of kinetic events…However, what did not change in Frederickson was the very poor control…Since the velocity here is so far off from what has been reported, I can’t give Frederickson a grade until I see him as the pitcher he is reputed to be.

Grade – Incomplete

He's extremely quick and good.

Lawrie makes Canada's Olympic team

I figured this deserved its own FanShot in addition to being noted here, but Lawrie almost certainly will not sign until near the August 15th deadline now.

Ethan Martin signs

The Dodgers signed Ethan Martin, the pick right before Lawrie in the draft and a fellow high school hitter, for $1.7M. Lawrie will probably receive something similar.

Does anybody have/or know of any videos/links to some tapes of brewers draft picks.

Reassurance that Lawrie is still going to sign
For the first time in Jack Zduriencik’s nine years as scouting director, the Brewers’ first-round pick won’t sign in time to play pro ball this summer. Brett Lawrie, a prep catcher from British Columbia, joined the Canadian Junior National team on Sunday to begin preparing for the world tournament later in the month in Edmonton, Alberta.

Lawrie, 18, also has been selected to play for the Canadian Olympic team that will compete in August in Beijing. That would preclude Lawrie from playing pro ball this year.

"We’d like to have him but we knew this was going to happen," said Zduriencik, who attended the Futures Game. "But he’s playing and playing at a high level. It’s a big event for him and a wonderful thing to participate in.

"His agent is very positive about him wanting to be a Brewer. We’re going to be supportive and watch him play. We’ll have somebody there for all of his games."

The deadline for signing 2008 draft picks is Aug. 15. Because of Lawrie’s national commitments, negotiations probably will not be concluded until that day or just before.

"Talks have been positive and cordial," Zduriencik said. "The sooner we get him signed, the better for us. I think we’re going to be fine. He wants to be a Brewer."

I'm excited for the Olympics

Hopefully we get a couple televised Team Canada baseball games to get a look at Lawrie in action.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

Blake Billings

I just got word from 19th-round RHP Blake Billings, from Hillcrest HS in Alabama, that he’s signed and in Arizona. After Lawrie signs, which is a foregone conclusion, the Brewers will have signed their first 26 picks, which is phenomenal work.

by battlekow on Jul 16, 2008 11:51 PM CDT   0 recs

By my count it's the first 25 picks.

According to your list, our 23rd round pick, Marcus Knecht, has yet to sign with the team.

by NoahJ on Jul 17, 2008 8:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nevermind.

Lawrie isn’t on the list yet, and though you were talking about him I disregarded that entirely.

30th-rounder Wayne Dedrick signs; he was a high school teammate of 19th-round pick Blake Billings.

The signing deadline is tomorrow, and the only player I know of that for sure isn’t signing is 23-rounder Marcus Knecht

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Aug 14, 2008 3:32 PM CDT   0 recs

am I wrong in thinking that we signed an incredible amount of our picks this year?

Royals sign Tim Melville. Melville was considered, along with Odorizzi, to be at the top of the signable high school arms.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Aug 15, 2008 11:42 AM CDT   0 recs

Meanwhile, The Yankees aren’t going to be able to sign Gerrit Cole. Cole had probably the best stuff of any high school arm, but people didn’t like his mechanics and attitude.

I wonder what’s going to happen with Alex Meyer and the Red Sox.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Aug 15, 2008 11:43 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sounds like Meyer isn’t going to sign. Interesting that the two East Coast behemoths are going to both lose coveted prep arms, while the Royals landed theirs.
