Game Thread #79: Brewers (43-35) at Twins (43-36)
I'd really like to win this series. Obviously, I'd like to win every series, but if we take 2 out of 3 this weekend, we'll have a winning record in interleague, and given the way interleague has gone so far this year, odds are the Cubs and/or Cards won't do the same and we'll pick up some ground.
The matchup tonight is between guys who you almost certainly did not draft for your fantasy team before the season started: Seth McClung and Nick Blackburn. You don't need me to tell you how awesome McClung has been since moving into the rotation, but it is worth noting that he got the W against the Twins two starts ago. Blackburn has also been quite good, with a 3.68 ERA and peripherals that support it.
Game time is 7:10 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Dumpster
His era started the day at 2.63 and now its at 3.26. Not bad for 2.1 innings pitched.
Maybe someone is finally coming down to earth.
Now an offical game
Now even the last hope of the Cubs fans Mother Nature cannot save them Hell let it rain now lol
Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.
According to STATS...
- The Twins are looking for their first 10-game winning streak since winning 11 in a row from June 22-July 3, 2006. Minnesota’s pitchers have a 1.78 ERA and have not allowed more than three runs in any game during this current streak.
- Corey Hart has 20 RBI so far this month, which is tied for the second most by any N.L. player.
- Delmon Young’s eight outfield assists are tied for third most in the majors. Unfortunately, he also has six errors—which is tied with teammate Carlos Gomez for the second most by any outfielder.
Justin Upton’s eight errors lead the league for outfielders.

I didn't think this ever happened
An umpire got suspended for one game for bumping a manager.

Same guy who tossed the Twins manager
after he didn’t grant time and Mota (?) threw strike three.
If you go to the Star Tribune and click on the photo gallery by the Ump suspended story, he’s had quite a month.
Cubs Lose
Dye just made a nice catch against the wall to end it.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Prince DH, Dillon at 1st
Dillon 7th, Cameron 8th, Kendall 9th. Will this be the day Joltin’ Joe finally gets his first 2008 extra base hit off a righty?

Gagne...
I thought he was supposed to be activated today. Did the Club decide to keep him down or a little more work after his last start in AAA? Or are they waiting for after the game?
I don't understand
How McClung is any good. From his picture on gamecast, he looks like a Beer League softball player that’s not even in good shape. Now, he has allowed a 3 homer guy to go yard. So I guess that’s that. He should not be pitching as well as he has.
yeah
between a gamecast picture and one at-bat, you can do a thorough analysis of just about any player.
Also, cheese.

You must really loathe Tim Byrdak
Stocky, wearing glasses AND giving up a homer to Kendall. :)
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I wonder...
How stocky and unattractive the guy who gave up the homer to Counsell was? I would hate him the most.
How about this?
I am still angry about McClung throwing at the Cards last year, whether or not he was ordered to. And when he threw at the guy in the ‘strohs game this year. I don’t mind throwing at people or having a long memory, but don’t do it in stupid situations. Wait until you are up or down 5 runs.
Great quote from McClung that night...
“It’s not the first guy I’ve hit, not the first walk. Why do you think Tampa traded me?” McClung said. “It happens sometimes with me. The ball just gets out of my hand and flies away.”
I'm out of chocolate
I suppose it’s a good thing that I’m going to the games this weekend instead of tonight’s…
especially now

Proving that if you talk enough about Blackburn not giving up HR, he’ll give up a HR.

well...i guess
he didn’t score and would have created a force opportunity if the situation was a bit different:P yeah, okay, so the run wouldn’t have scored, as that would have been out 3…

Thinking out loud
Regardless of his at bats tonight, why start Dillon at 1B? Why not let Branyan play there and start Counsell at third against the righties?

lets hope the plane has to turn around
conveniently, the guy that fills up the plane didn’t put quite enough gas in, but they found out in time to turn around.

why not just have fielder play the base
I don’t like him on the bench, more inactive than usual. He’s probably gotten into the bullpen’s candy stash somehow.
I’d rather have him in the field.

Very first pitch that I opened gameday
And I was excited… Jason K hit a HR…. oh wait… not Grit

Let Rickie go here?
Mauer is pretty good at throwing out runners but we might need to sneak run in here.
if by "let rickie go"
you mean fire him?
then maybe;)

that JJ could use a HR.

The power is back
This reminds me of last year… everyone is hitting it out

I honestly thought about the roids for Branyan
How often does a player get tested? I think it is random, but are 300 people tested a year? 100? Each player tested twice?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
of all the guys
he’s the least likely to be roiding.
I don’t think PEDs make you strike out less. Branyan hardly needed more power.
Also, cheese.

Blackburn nearing 90 - usually doesn't go much beyond
And now they’re stalling on the mound – probably the last batter for him
This is nuts

Is someone warming in the Brewers' bullpen?
Not that I want McClung out, but I was wondering why ol’ Little Nicky Punto was switched into 2B…
commentary from my mother
I just got off the phone with her—”McClung was awful during the first! I thought he was going to walk everybody. He’s so nervous!”
...and now I get to watch the game myself, and wtf is he DOING out there?
sitting on the bench being emo, it looks like
Hopefully he’ll be happier tomorrow. My camera and I will be there before the game.
Did you ask her why Braun was never invited to the IGB?
"Brett Favre looks like a man in a parking lot playing with boys." - John Madden

she still has trouble telling Hardy and Braun apart
Tell you true re my mother, she’s more fond of McClung—except when he’s walking vast quantities of Twins.
Ahh
So she’s Klingon then?

Hardy
Now 13 for his last 34 with 5 2B and a HR, raising his season line from .242/.319/.352 to .261/.335/.394

But I guess you won’t win many games when your starter doesn’t get through five innings. Get ‘em tomorrow.

well
a bad loss… i really wish the crew could have pulled this one out

Kendall
I pin that loss on Kendall and the need to keep calling high fastballs to Mauer. Mauer is a batting champ, if you keep throwing him the same pitch, he’s going to make you pay.
none of the pitches in that at bat were at the chin
You can go back and look at the gameday info. Stomach is a better description.
