Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

It's clearly from a newspaper

Consider it akin to Tom Haudricourt’s evil corporate version of LOLCATS.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 3, 2008 9:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Trenni: Randy Johnson was unhittable early. What changed in the sixth?

Braun: Nothing, really. I’m just a superstar, baby. I just really want to kiss you right now.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 3, 2008 9:41 PM CDT   0 recs

Obviously fictional

Braun doesn’t announce his intentions, he makes them happen.

Can you imagine?

That would be funny. Of course, being FSN, the camera guys will have missed it.

Speaking of camera guys, we sat behind them a few years ago. I don’t know if they all did this, but one in particular, when there wasn’t action on the field, he’s use the camera to scope out hot girls. I don’t think it was for the filler images in between pitches either - I got the impression it was for his own amusement. A little creepy.

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

by roguejim on Jun 4, 2008 9:14 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

They do more than scope

When I used to live in Valpo back in the early 90’s I remember Steve and Gary from the Loop talking about a tape the camera crew at Soxs Park had sent them. Lets just say it would have been rated M for Mature if it was a video game lol

I guess a lot goes on in the Upper Decks lol.

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

I don’t miss Daron at all. I like Brian okay, better than his unctuous predecessor.

Marquis is not great

He could implode here. The problem is can the Padres hold down the Cub offense? They have just been on fire.

Seems like the Cubs get behind by a run or two in every game

2-0, 3-2, etc, but come back to win every time, usually involving doubles by Mark DeRosa and Geovany Soto.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 3, 2008 9:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

So slightly off topic

I made a plot of the strike zone on 0-2 pitches and 3-0 pitches. Quite different.

I just looked at gameday. Marquis is in the 60s after three. That bullpen has to blow a gasket eventually.

by ol Pete on Jun 3, 2008 10:04 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

He is on my fantasy team

and it sure seems like it’s been blown for his last couple appearances.

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

I have a no Cub policy

And I sincerely hope it continues blowing at least until next week.

Ha.

Is Braun as seemingly doggish as Hall? If so, it’s just another reason to love him.

I have too much time to get anything done

by mschroeder on Jun 3, 2008 10:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I do too

But I had an auto-draft and was away from my computer during the draft… and took Soriano… I just finalized a trade for David Ortiz straight up, and this is what happens!

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

baseball tonight hatin on the Brewers

They don’t show any of their homers in their “touch them all” feature. For web gems, they show Johnson bare handing and of course extended feature on RJs strikeout history.

by ol Pete on Jun 3, 2008 10:07 PM CDT   0 recs

Dear god

Huntsville scored 15 runs tonight. The damage:

Brantley: 3-6, 2 R, 1 RBI
Escobar: 3-6, 3 R
Gamel: 2-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 2 BB
Salome: 3-4, 3 R, 6 RBI, 1 HR, 2 BB
LaPorta: 3-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 2B, 1 BB
Gillespie: 3-5, 3 RBI, 1 2B, 1 BB

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jun 3, 2008 10:08 PM CDT   0 recs

and only 1 HR

always nice to see runs scored without the longball

It's especially the power that's encouraging

I mean, I think he could be a .280-.300 hitter, but I doubt he’s a .340 hitter. If he can slug over .400 at the big league level, though, that would be great.

He's extremely quick and good.

He use to be really young for his league but not so much anymore. Good to see him hitting for some power.

2-1 now

I am sick of all these fans cheering for the cubs when they are on the road. Why do people love that team so much? Seriously for a long time they were just a cash cow for the tribune and even now they are trying to bleed a ton of money from selling them.

I share the sick feeling

I live in the Gaslamp (downtown San Diego). Thus, I have been surrounded by Cubs fans the last two evenings, leading me to boo each one I meet on the street. Even the Padres radio announcers (somewhat annoying themselves) commented on how Cubs fans are intolerable.

Couple of comments from D-backs world

Gracie and Sutt making fun of McClung and how the dbacks can’t hit him…

and later

Are you kidding me? Braun looked like Peter Pan on that one…dbacks luck just sucks right now…

by ol Pete on Jun 3, 2008 10:21 PM CDT   0 recs

I would feel pretty much the same about McClung

I mean he has no history of pitching well and they were hitting some balls hard there.

I don’t know if I would make fun of him though, especially if my team was being held down.

I had to laugh at the Peter Pan comment though.

So speaking of potential trading partners

I wonder if the Royals might be willing to give up Zack Greinke? He is getting kind of close to becoming expensive and they could use some of our prospects. Greinke seems like a guy Maddux would work well with.

Visit my baseball blog ...or else!

by dixieflatline on Jun 3, 2008 10:24 PM CDT   0 recs

I'd love him

but I think he’s a guy the Royals wouldn’t give up very easily. They’d probably require a good position player from Huntsville in a deal.

My uncle

Worked with Zach in Kansas City and says he has never seen an athlete who cares less than he does… he didn’t understand why coaches kept trying to fix his form, and why he had to go to games on days he didn’t pitch, he had to see sports psychologists and seems like the type of guy that could retire perfectly healthy at the age of 27… isn’t a headcase, but just didn’t seem to get it… but as long as he performs, I guess I wouldn’t mind

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

by Kyguy922 on Jun 3, 2008 10:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Is he still like that?

I have heard he has gotten a lot better about that. I also have heard that he really knows how to pitch. But you never really know about a player like that.

Visit my baseball blog ...or else!

by dixieflatline on Jun 3, 2008 10:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I think he suffered from social anxiety order

Was the diagnosis, he was better when he came back… But he still doesn’t interact much with teammates from what I understand… but he has been better at taking directions from coaches

I mean you have to think carefully about trading the farm

But how long is the window going to be open? This will be the last year of Sheets most likely and our young players are going to be getting expensive pretty soon.

Back to the Cubs

Obviously they are off to a great start but maybe there is trouble brewing for them. Rich Hill can’t throw strikes in AAA even. Lilly and Marquis have been having trouble. Gallagher is a 5th starter at best. Dempster hasn’t thrown a ton of innings the last few years so he could tire as the season goes on.

For those watching the Cubs game

Does Ledezma remind you Vargas? I went to Ledezma’s start against the Reds a week ago and walked away vowing to never again go to a game he starts. The interesting part of the night occurred when the season-ticket holder next to me started talking about being good friends with Jim Skaalen.
