Gagne up, DiFelice down

Eric Gagne has been activated off the DL and Mark DiFelice has been optioned back to AAA.  No word on what role he will fill.  Ned did have this to add however:

"He needs to continue to work on his ability to get left-handers out," Yost said.

In theory, Gagne's change should be that pitch.  Change ups are naturally very effective against opposite handed batters so the fact that Ned is saying this implies that the change isn't all the way back yet.  Something to watch for when he takes the mound.

Oh joy

i’m not saying DiFelice can keep up what he’s doing lately…but we’ve already seen what Gagne can do…can’t be worse than Mota lately though! I guess $10 mil doesn’t get ya what it used to…back to GTAIV! :)

This simutax makes me feel like a koala bear crapped a rainbow in my brain!

Yost's quote

I thought that was a comment on DiFelice, not Gagne.

Yup, and the comment was pretty accurate

DeFelice, against righties: .139 .139 .194 .333
DeFelice, against lefties: .421 .421 1.053 1.474

Interestingly, Gagne had been worse against righties than lefties:
Against righties: .333 .467 .556 1.022
Against lefties: .262 .380 .476 .856

The point stands, though, that Gagne has to execute the change like he did back in the day to be effective.

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

So does this make DeFelice

a candidate for the newly created ROOGY position?

"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

What's interesting

Is in the minors this year, DiFelice is better against lefties than righties.

D'oh!

I should read the plastic cup before posting elsewhere, methinks. :)

Well that is what you get when you post at 1:36 AM I guess

Still, checking out Gagne’s change up should be interesting.

control

It is all about control for Gagne. Aside from the notion that “we have seen what Gagne has to offer”, based on 20 innings, Crew fans should note that he is striking out nearly a guy an inning and his BABIP has been a bit unlucky.

Gagne still has the necesary skill to be a solid bullpen option (especially better than guys like Mota). He just needs to cut out all the damn walks.

If he does that, Gagne will probably still be their best reliever. If he doesn’t, he will continue to stink.
