Game Thread #82: Brewers (44-37) at D-Backs (41-41)
It's no surprise that the D-Backs are leading their division, but it is a surprise they're doing so with a .500 record. I guess that lower-class NL Central has to beat up on somebody, right?
Starters tonight are Dave Bush and Doug Davis. Bush has three quality starts in a row plus a 3.89 ERA in his last seven outings, while Davis has done even better lately--all three of his most recent starts were QS's, all three came in interleague, including one against the Red Sox.
Game time is an alarm-clock unfriendly 8:40 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Worried
is anyone else worried about this series? I don’t like playing a first place team on the road in a 4 game series and not having Sheets pitch in any of the games. The only game we might be expected to win is tomorrow with Soup against the Big Unit. At least we miss Harren this series.
wow...
that looked like a medium-depth fly off the bat.
not sure whether i misjudged, or whether the AZ air is really that crazy.
Also, cheese.
holy crap
and here I am bitching about the humidity in nyc.
Also, cheese.

yeah...
...and i thought mid 90s was bad.
although we cracked 100 on Saturday I think
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 30, 2008 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions
To be fair
It’s 69% in NYC vs. 12% in Phoenix. Though the 32-degree difference probably makes more a difference.
He's extremely quick and good.
probably
I think it’s been over 90 the last couple days. and it feels like the humidity has been 70+ for about three weeks now.
Also, cheese.

Did anyone else see?
The classic Cordero inning tonight? Gets men on 1st and 2nd w/ no outs, loads the bases, but gives up no runs.
Torres has been doing that a fair amount
but to be fair, he’s been 1-2 errors to get the first half accomplished.
I guess closers like to flirt with disaster.

close play at 3B?
unfortunately i don’t get the juicy details on gameday.

Completely..
He spun, and basically threw the ball right into the ground to JJ about 10 feet away. Was very odd looking.
D-Bags
A single and a HR from hitting for the cycle this inning as a team.

i was about to say the same thing
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Ahhh
The real Dave Bush returns!
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
maybe we should play "21"
but if you don’t hit it exactly you go back to 15.
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 30, 2008 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions
Is Dave Bush's approval rating higher than George W Bush's 29%
This could be a long game

23%, check that
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Sometimes Dave Bush reminds me of myself in little league
I could never get out of an inning without the maximum runs scored. I never got 3 outs. Just the maximum number of runs the other team could score. I would just get teed off on. Even though I hhave only gamecast, I can see his pitches hanging.
in my two little league appearances (majors level)
I struck out the side
after inducing about 10 grounders that went for little league “hits” (read 9 errors, 1 semi legit hit).
At the seniors level I managed to ride the pine in my final season. The coach and I didn’t exactly see eye to eye. One of volunteer coaches loved me though – Tom Foley (named in some of the potential new MLB manager discussions, albeit at the bottom of a list of like 70), at the time the 3rd base coach for the Brewers. He rode his son into the turf…don’t think he plays any more;)

hopeful thought
Before his recent stint as Cy Bush, he had several nice outings where he started out with a bad first and did well after that
How about bringing in Bush!
Isn’t he our long man?
by PagsBrewCrew on Jun 30, 2008 9:12 PM CDT up reply actions
is he still leading the league?

gameday stick figure
is still very thin for Fielder
they should approximate him with an egg on the screen.
Voted my 25 times just now
More to get 2 Cubs out of the top 3 outfielders but I think Braun deserves it more than any of the 3 ahead of him.
I voted for him 25x too
but with each of 5 or 6 email addresses.

Mike Hampton a pitcher for the Braves, is said to be on a rehab assignment
according to the article, they had him in Class A Rome (is that right? not AAA?) and he gave up 4 runs in 3 innings.
He should be back in the majors by the end of the all star break if his rehab goes “without incident”
I’d say giving up more runs than innings in class A qualifies as an incident.
Cubs
I saw earlier today that A. Ramirez will miss the next 3 games tending to personal matters in the D.R. Hopefully the Brewers will get a bit of help from S.F.
on vacation?
I was wondering where this Bush had gone the past couple weeks.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
i haven't looked at his stats
it was more a passing comment, but I don’t think records are absolutely meaningless, particularly for relievers, where ERAs are biased downward anyway. It says something about reliability, like Turnbow last year for example, who had a decent ERA but no one ever felt safe after April with him in the game. I guess it tells something about variance (which is admittedly hard to measure with a small sample size).
by keephopealive on Jun 30, 2008 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Then again
It’s tough for decent relievers to get wins anyway since they hardly ever enter games when it’s tied or their team is trailing.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I agree
that’s why I mentioned the six losses… wins are luck for relievers. It actually looks like Qualls had a bunch of unearned runs… again I don’t know the details, but unearned runs are not pitcher independent

Whole bunch of previous not-goodness
Combined with walking more guys than he struck out, despite the nice ERA, and I’m guessing lack of options.

Is there any team
that has a good hitting pitcher that they use as a reliever to pinch hit position players and then pitch from that point in the lineup?

In all those games he pinch-hit for the pitcher though, not a position player. I forgot he started three games in left field in 2003.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
I don't think anyone's done it regularly
I could only find three possible instances of a pitcher pinch-hitting for a position player and then staying in to pitch since 1956.
1. August 5, 1959 – Jack Harshman of the Cleveland Indians pinch hit for rookie second baseman Ray Webster in the sixth inning. Harshman grounded out to the pitcher before pitching two innings.
2. May 13, 1961 – I suspect there’s an error in the box score for this one as Angels hurler Jerry Casale pitch hit for outfielder Lee Thomas, who was in turn pinch-hitting for pitcher Ned Garver. I wonder if Thomas was on deck as a decoy and was announced as a pinch hitter even though the Angels really wanted to send Casale up there. Maybe this shouldn’t count anyway, being a PH for either a PH or a fellow pitcher. Casale struck out and then pitched four innings, striking out once more along the way.
3. July 17, 1977 – This one is bizarre. With the game tied at 3-3, Mets catcher Jerry Grote led off the seventh inning with a double. Presumably for speed-related reasons, he was replaced on the basepaths with shortstop Bud Harrelson. A groundout moved Harrelson to third and two walks loaded the bases. Two singles and a grand slam gave the Mets six quick runs scored as the Pirates used five pitchers in the inning. With two outs, Harrelson’s spot in the lineup came up and he was pinch hit for by reliever Skip Lockwood. Lockwood flew out to center and pitched two scoreless innings to finish the game. Harrelson wasn’t a very good hitter, but I suspect his being pinch-hit for was injury related. Normally a guy who started a fair amount of games at short, this game took place in the middle of a nearly month-long stretch in which Harrelson made only a couple appearances at short amidst a lot of pinch running. I wonder if he had trouble swinging a bat but the team didn’t want to DL him for some reason.
