Game Thread #60: D-Backs (32-27) at Brewers (31-28)
Two sweeps in a row? Dare to dream...
It's Micah Owings vs. Manny Parra. Whaddya think, more hits this afternoon from the pitchers' spots or the catchers' spots?
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Prediction
Micah Owings has more hits than Russell Branyan. And fewer strikeouts.

I think the Brewers stand an excellent chance of extending their lead in home runs allowed to pitchers

Way off topic
So does anyone know anything about making animated .gifs? I am trying to make a nice animation of a Ben Sheets curve and while the program I have will let me store frames every 1/100th of a second if I do that when I open it in firefox it clearly isn’t in real time. Is that because the gif is too big? It is only a little larger than 100K so I thought I was doing well with the size.
BTW, obviously I am not done with it yet as Ben only has one arm and isn’t leg kicking or anything like that. Eventually I am going to move this to the point of view of the batter as well.
Looks like Ben is finally taking his conditioning seriously
He’s lost some weight.
He's extremely quick and good.
Yeah a ton of weight
He is going to stay a stick figure though as my animation skills only work with simple lines or points.
by dixieflatline on Jun 4, 2008 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Well that I could probably do
Hopefully sometime tonight/tomorrow he is going to rock back and forth when he winds up with a nice leg kick. The add the off arm and such. Hopefully it will make for some nice eye candy for my next THT article as it seems like I might be losing some interest lately.
by dixieflatline on Jun 4, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions
err
isn’t the cycling limited by the refresh rate of your monitor?
Ie, 60-72 should be the max frames per second you store?
also sometimes things go slowly the first time through, but when cached they go at the intended speed.
Yeah I see the slow down even when I open it on my computer
So it isn’t the intertubes getting all gunked up. The FPS though might be the issue. Thanks!

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
At this point in the season
what’s the max % points a regular player can get increased on a batting average in a game (say 5ABs)
wait
so Braun, being just under .300 could be a .320 hitter by the end of the game? that doesn’t seem right.
I thought he had some 3 for 4 days where he only went up about .007. but can’t argue with the numbers…
well...depends on current BA and # of ABs...
but Braun has 240 ABs.
If he was batting .250, then went 5 for 5, he’d end the day at .265.

Hart hit a ball to right that looked like a double or homer for sure
Upton snagged it with a nice running/jumping catch near the wall

But don’t you think Kapler only goes a quarter or half way down to third base, because if it drops, he probably will score. Don’t know how hard ti wasw hit, but that is what it would seem like to me

You can improve your “consumption” of animal products without deleting it entirely; rational, adult human beings compromise, and when you’re feeding your family playing a game that requires the use of horsehide, that’s one compromise you might be tempted to make.

Worse would be being put in CF
Moving Kapler to LF so Braun could come out.

Looks like we can finally pick up a half game on the Cubs
Until they win tomorrow and push it back to a full 7 games

So le last few games the pitching has been out of this world
1 run
1 run
1 run
3 runs
1 run
1 run today
I know that isn’t going to last but you are going to win a lot of games if you pitch like that.
I'm still getting into some of the advanced statistical stuff so humor me here...
So maybe I don’t have the background to understand the reason behind this…but Fan Graphs has Corey Hart’s WPA as the fourth worst on the team, only ahead of Sheets, Suppan, and Kendall…
http://www.fangraphs.com/winss.aspx?team=Brewers&season=2008
Is something goofed there or am I not understanding something about how WPA works?
WPA likes it when you are clutch
So it kind of hates starters and if you hit a 3 run homer when it is already 6-1 you basically get nothing for it. So WPA for players has some issues.

hmm
I had thought Corey was one of the best guys on the team with runners in scoring position…does this care about something else?
He might be doing well with RiSP
But if he is getting runs in when the game is a blowout either way then WPA doesn’t really care. It likes it a lot if you tie a game or take a lead, especially late.

Nicely Done Young Man!
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
interesting pitch by Tavarez
watching the man on second through part of his delivery and gets a K out of it
Why
are all the super fun games played while I’m at work?

Maybe you should go take a shower and see if the D'backs make it close
He's extremely quick and good.
Look, George Clooney is in the stands

I'm going to go with "spite" for that one.

Swept a series against an above .500 team without him

Twice in 2006
July 3-5, three games against the Reds (44-41 after the three losses). The starters were Bush, Davis, and Villanueva. The Reds finished the year 80-82 though.
Also, May 16-18, three games against the Phillies (22-18 after the losses). The starters were Capuano, Bush, and Eveland. The Phils wound up 85-77.
Both those series were at home. The last time they swept ANY team on the road without Sheets was August 25-28, 2003, against the Reds (58-75 following the series). The rotation went Kinney, Davis, Franklin, and Obermueller.
The last time they swept a team above .500 on the road without Sheets was August 21-23, 2000 (before his major league debut). They swept the Diamondbacks in Arizona, dropping their record to 70-56 behind the eminently forgettable John Snyder, the better-known Jeff D’Amico, and Jimmy Haynes.
