Six of Sixty-Two: Draft Day is Here

We're mere hours away now from The Great Restocking.  Thanks to Coco Cordero and Scott Linebrink signing elsewhere in the offseason, we have a boatload of extra picks, and I'm sure Jack Zduriencik will use them wisely.  (Hey Jack, think Gallardo, not Rogers, ok?)

A great place to follow the action is MLB.com's Draft Central.  The Draft Tracker application has info on hundreds of eligible players, and will track (duh) every pick.  There's video on many of the top prospects, and plenty of fluff-filled feature articles to keep you busy.

The draft starts at 1:00 CT.  If the pace is what I recall from last year, the Brewers will make their first selection (#16) between 2:00 and 2:30 CT.  The first round will be on ESPN, and the whole shebang will be live on video through mlb.com.  I think the first five rounds will take place today, with the remainder of the draft moving along at a much more rapid pace starting at 10:30 CT tomorrow.

Future Sheets's, Fielders, Brauns, Harts, and Gallardos, assemble!

My choice for first pick

Josh Fields – closer…could be in the pen this year.

by brew82 on Jun 5, 2008 11:15 AM CDT reply actions

Don't pick on need, but best available

Doesn’t matter if we are stacked in the position, whether it be a C or an OF or a top 1B .. ... I do like Josh Fields, but there is a good chance one top 12 player will fall to the Brewers.

I like what I have heard about Jason Castro, not the one from American Idol at catcher. Also Brett Lawrie, the Canadian…

There is a lot of information out there and a lot of mock drafts, I for the first time am excited about this years draft. Say Sheets and Cameron leave next year, we might have a similar number of picks… which would be exciting again (not that I hope Sheets leaves us).. Gagne isn’t a class A or B free agent, is he? haha…

Go Brewers Go…

Someone grab a rule book

Isn’t there some sort of loophole we could exploit to draft Lincecum? The Giants aren’t a professional team, are they?

I don't think so

But I think there is a good possibility they will confuse which draft is which and draft Negro Leaguer

by Kyguy922 on Jun 5, 2008 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Marginally helpful

Then again, it is the USA Today:

The rankings are compiled based upon player performance over the past two seasons. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, the rankings are used to determine whether players are Type “A” or Type “B.” The classification determines which draft picks former teams receive as compensation if they sign with another team. The top 20% of the rankings are “A” and the next 20% “B.”

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

by roguejim on Jun 5, 2008 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

thanks

So Gagne’s saves in Texas help the value a little I guess… if he comes back adn pitches with an ERA in the 4 range, he might stay as a class B free agent… granted he was one of the last RP on the list last year… so maybe he pitched his way off of the list

But as it was said in one article I read… the Brewers shouldn’t have picked Prince at #7 because Hart and someone else occupied slots in AAA and AA, and it would have been a wasted pick… I don’t think you can rule out players or pick players just because of your need, and Prince proved that

depends on where you're going to be...

the “big” tournaments take place every two months in the odd-numbered months. They’ll have just concluded the July tournament in Nagoya on the 27th, then there’s a few days of recuperation downtime before nearly everyone is heading out on a tour of the Northern countryside.

Incidentally, if you (or anybody, really) are anywhere near Los Angeles right now, there’s the two-day overseas tour event in Los Angeles this weekend. (And to bring this back to baseball, one of the top stars is scheduled to throw the first pitch for the Cubs-Dodgers game tomorrow.)

Baseball Analysts Interview

MH: Do you have any specific career goals at this point, aside from playing professional baseball?

Lawrie: I really don’t. All I want to do is play in the big leagues and I want to get there as quick as I can. I don’t plan on staying in the minors for five years. I plan on doing it in a year-and-a-half.

Great comment on Lawrie, that proves his confidence and no fear attitude

Scouts rave about his raw power and some believe he may be the most advanced hitter at age 18 in the country’s history. But it’s the intangibles that really seem to set him apart, what one described as “the ridiculous fearlessness” he shows on the field and a relentless competitive drive to dominate.

“You could put this kid in a stadium with 50,000 people and tell him he’s facing Josh Beckett tomorrow and he’d smile and think, ‘I’m going to get Josh Beckett,”’ said one executive who has watched Lawrie play extensively. “At this point he probably won’t but he’ll go up there, not be intimidated, take his swings and look good doing it. He’s got no fear. Period.”
