Six of Sixty-Two: Draft Day is Here
We're mere hours away now from The Great Restocking. Thanks to Coco Cordero and Scott Linebrink signing elsewhere in the offseason, we have a boatload of extra picks, and I'm sure Jack Zduriencik will use them wisely. (Hey Jack, think Gallardo, not Rogers, ok?)
A great place to follow the action is MLB.com's Draft Central. The Draft Tracker application has info on hundreds of eligible players, and will track (duh) every pick. There's video on many of the top prospects, and plenty of fluff-filled feature articles to keep you busy.
The draft starts at 1:00 CT. If the pace is what I recall from last year, the Brewers will make their first selection (#16) between 2:00 and 2:30 CT. The first round will be on ESPN, and the whole shebang will be live on video through mlb.com. I think the first five rounds will take place today, with the remainder of the draft moving along at a much more rapid pace starting at 10:30 CT tomorrow.
Future Sheets's, Fielders, Brauns, Harts, and Gallardos, assemble!

Don't pick on need, but best available
Doesn’t matter if we are stacked in the position, whether it be a C or an OF or a top 1B .. ... I do like Josh Fields, but there is a good chance one top 12 player will fall to the Brewers.
I like what I have heard about Jason Castro, not the one from American Idol at catcher. Also Brett Lawrie, the Canadian…
There is a lot of information out there and a lot of mock drafts, I for the first time am excited about this years draft. Say Sheets and Cameron leave next year, we might have a similar number of picks… which would be exciting again (not that I hope Sheets leaves us).. Gagne isn’t a class A or B free agent, is he? haha…
Go Brewers Go…

Isn’t there some sort of loophole we could exploit to draft Lincecum? The Giants aren’t a professional team, are they?

I don't think so
But I think there is a good possibility they will confuse which draft is which and draft Negro Leaguer

You mean the Giants?
They may not even be aware that there’s a draft going on. Probably all working on a big free agent deal for Julio Franco.

I heart the draft.

I'll be updating the post with the first round, and probably the Brewers' first seven selections

Have we ever checked

While we wait
What kind of stats do you think Gagne will have to put to net us 2 FAs when he leaves? 40 saves?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Well we got 2 for Linebrink
And he didn’t get any saves.. so I think it would be more about bring the ERA down
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
take that back 1 save
But how is it determined if you are a class A or B free agent?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Marginally helpful
Then again, it is the USA Today:
The rankings are compiled based upon player performance over the past two seasons. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, the rankings are used to determine whether players are Type “A” or Type “B.” The classification determines which draft picks former teams receive as compensation if they sign with another team. The top 20% of the rankings are “A” and the next 20% “B.”
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
thanks
So Gagne’s saves in Texas help the value a little I guess… if he comes back adn pitches with an ERA in the 4 range, he might stay as a class B free agent… granted he was one of the last RP on the list last year… so maybe he pitched his way off of the list

It seems so important to draft a RP or a C for the Brewers
But as it was said in one article I read… the Brewers shouldn’t have picked Prince at #7 because Hart and someone else occupied slots in AAA and AA, and it would have been a wasted pick… I don’t think you can rule out players or pick players just because of your need, and Prince proved that

Great comment on Lawrie, that proves his confidence and no fear attitude
Scouts rave about his raw power and some believe he may be the most advanced hitter at age 18 in the country’s history. But it’s the intangibles that really seem to set him apart, what one described as “the ridiculous fearlessness” he shows on the field and a relentless competitive drive to dominate.
“You could put this kid in a stadium with 50,000 people and tell him he’s facing Josh Beckett tomorrow and he’d smile and think, ‘I’m going to get Josh Beckett,”’ said one executive who has watched Lawrie play extensively. “At this point he probably won’t but he’ll go up there, not be intimidated, take his swings and look good doing it. He’s got no fear. Period.”

Girlfriend ratio of 2.5 to 1?
That sounds high.

(love the interview here)
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Another great "cocky" quote
MH: What is the most attractive reason, for you, to go pro now?
Lawrie: I know I can hit over .400 against those guys when I’m 15, so who says I’m not going to do it when I’m 20, you know? I can play with those guys; I know I can. On almost every trip I’ve hit over .400 against them. Not much is going to change. I’m just playing and trying not to do too much… I’m just having fun.

Daniel Schlereth
I interviewed him last year, he was a very cool guy.
He's extremely quick and good.
He's already had Tommy John surgery?

It's like steroids
Even non-athletes are getting it at age 15 now to boost their jerking speed.
He's extremely quick and good.
Lawrie
John Sickels from Minor League Ball picked him in his Twins Shadow Draft.
Coffee is for closers
Then again
if he catches, maybe he pitches. I’m sure they’ll find a position for him sooner or later.

you're just angling for a spot on next year's coverage
And knowing ESPN, they just might go for that Sackmann/Callis/Law triple threat match.
no way
I don’t know nearly enough to do something like this.
I wouldn’t mind if they asked me about a data service, though.

I'm pretty sure I'm not going on TV.
But I’ll definitely need to do something with my hair if I do :).

I forgot Tim Melville was on the board still
I think it’s him or Odorizzi at #32.
He's extremely quick and good.
Can’t UW-Milwaukee have “glory” in at least one Division 1 sport (if they were any good at baseball)
Coffee is for closers
UWM has a 6'7" pitcher that is supposed to get drafted
Forget his name.
He's extremely quick and good.
Rohn Jauch?

I was just wondering whatever happened to
Mike Goetz, the UWM guy we drafted two years ago. Looks like he’s in indy Frontier League now…
Yeah, he got released in the offseason
Ben Stanczyk got released this year, too.
He's extremely quick and good.
They hide them
