I am excited about this

Love the interest from everynoe… I agree, the off day and the recent win streak has everyone excited I think… plus yesterday’s Cubs loss and the number of picks we have

Would that erase three of there wins to loses

Or guarantee the next three games they play are forfeits?

hmmm

All three picks, which ones…, the first three, I would say no… I don’t know if this is the Brewers year… and keeping the talent in the organization is key… last year, it would have been worth it… but lets say they finish out 4 games this year… I don’t know

Don't like the word Quixotic and terrible command

Quixotic lefthander Evan Frederickson, who has one of the best arms in college baseball but was plagued by terrible command and control the last two years at Virginia Tech before transferring to USF, struck out 13 over seven shutout innings against the Golden Bears.

Frederickson looks like a bit of a reach. I guess we can afford to gamble a bit more when we’re hoarding draft picks.

by frostybadger on Jun 5, 2008 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't it be considered stupid and not a gamble if this guy is going to still be around at 53

A gamble would be pickign a guy who probably will be picked soon and has a high ceiling, but not a for sure thing… I know the Brewers did more research than me… but pretty sure the #116th ranked player could be taken with the 53, 54, or 62nd pick if they wanted

The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

by Kyguy922 on Jun 5, 2008 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

not that easy.

i think that the rankings, especially ones that go that deep, tend to rank based on an overall projection—upside and downside put together. some teams (not just the brewers) really like upside, so a guy with the best pure stuff in the draft certainly isn’t going to make it to 116 … you draft him on the chance he becomes randy johnson, fully realizing he probably won’t. I don’t know how soon that means you have to take him, but like you say, JZ probably has a better feel for that than we do.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jun 5, 2008 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

good point

in this ranking he is 68 or so… after the first few picks… it is anyone’s guess really what is going to happen, and there really aren’t “consensus” picks where everyone will agree on

The most interesting of those names could be Fredrickson, a 6-6 lefty who Baseball America ranks as the No. 116 prospect. He throws 94-96 mph and, at times, has a dominating curveball.

“He could go surprisingly high, because there is no one with better pure, raw stuff in the draft,” Rawnsley said. “Sometimes he throws 96 with a hammer, and sometimes he bounces balls to the backstop.”

He's extremely quick and good.

“I like to model my game around him,” said Lawrie, whom some scouts believe is the most advanced hitter at age 18 in Canadian history.

“He didn’t start catching until he was coming right out of junior college and I’ve challenged myself. I can play a number of positions, third base real well, I can play second, the outfield and I didn’t want to limit myself to one position.”

Lintz is a right-hander from Marshall County High School, who stands at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds. As a junior in 2007, Lintz earned a school-record 12-1 record on the mound, striking out 116 in 85 innings. Lintz totaled a 1.33 ERA while earning first-team All-State honors and leading his club to a Region Championship finish. An excellent student, Lintz is a four-year member of the honor roll, and currently stands second in his graduating class.

“Seth has a great arm and a very good feel for his curveball,” Cohen said. “He is an outstanding student and has a chance to have three above-average pitches.”

Schafer was drafted by the Red Sox in 2005

Baseball Cube page. The Red Sox have the largest scouting department, so perhaps the new market inefficiency is drafted their unsigned past picks.

Jack Zdrnklikndezik

finding market tricky ways to evaluate players, all the time.

From what I’ve found, I seem to like the Schafer pick.

just checked again

Jeff’s other non-D1 choice (Adelphi’s Robert Lanigan) even went 8 picks before Nieuwenhuis. Let’s hope his head doesn’t get too big once he finds out both were picked in the third round already. :)

1. That's oddly coincidental.. wonder what was going on

2. In the article that the picture was in, his father noted that he didn’t strike out during his senior year. Not even once.

3. That pic eerily looks like Craig Counsell. Don’t mean to jinx ya, Cutter.

He'd look more like his dad if he had a half-pound of chew in his cheek.

If Dad’s nickname was nails… what’s Cutter’s nickname? Or do you not need a nickname when you’re real name is Cutter?

checked out the scouting video

and was unimpressed with his play on the infield, then i saw the scouting report and this understatement.

Arm Strength: Dykstra’s arm is a tick below average and he has a little bit of an awkward throwing motion.

a “bit” awkward is generous. nothing to like from his scouting videos, nothing at all in my opinion. Then i see you write that he didn’t strike out? that’s my kind of prospect. I’ll be surprised if he makes it to AA. he’ll be the david eckstein of A ball.

good luck cutter, welcome aboard!

Draft coverers say he played outfield as well

so far the draft has gone as I would’ve liked it to. Take a stud position player, high potential guy first and then load up on the pitchers.

That was hilarious

“He knows how to play the game.”

As opposed to good people, who don’t actually know how to play and are taught how by utility players. For example, Counsell had to teach Braun the rules when he came up last year.

Too bad we didn’t grab Shooter Hunt too:

Maverick, Shooter, and Cutter would have been an intimidating arsenal.

Kevin Goldstein on Evan Frederickson

This typo made me laugh:

Kevin Goldstein (2:21:44 PM PT): 35. Brewers, Evan Fredrickson, LHP, USF

Like this guy. VERY tell LHP who throws down hell and has some projection.

Sounds intimidating! I can hear Black Sabbath in the background already.

When you rely less on developing your own players, the draft probably isn’t as interesting.

Video game numbers

mlb.com draft rundown

Odorizzi, who was scheduled to pitch Friday in the Illinois state playoffs, was 11-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his first 69 innings this season. He surrendered 18 hits in that span and five walks with 116 strikeouts.

“We understand those are high school numbers, but nevertheless pretty spectacular,” Zduriencik said.

a WHIP of 0.33?

Say, that’s not so bad.

After each strikeout, he would yell to the batter walking back to the dugout “I drink your milkshake!” Then he actually would go over to the opposing dugout and drink the poor guy’s milkshake, right in front of everyone. It’s very demoralizing when you’re the hitter.
