Game Thread #63: Brewers (32-30) at Rockies (24-38)
Today's matchup is one close to my heart. Jeffs Suppan and Francis will go head to head at Coors Field, to see which Jeff can keep the ball in the park. Francis was dominant his last time out, but gave up 6 runs in 6 innings his last start at Coors.
Suppan...well, he's been known to allow a deep fly now and then.
Game time is 2:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

So 100 games left on the schedule
Anyone want to guess the number of wins they have in the last 100? I am going to go with 54.
Dillon?
What has he done to earn a start? I want Rickie in there after sitting yesterday.
A walk and a hit notwithstanding
Dillon/Kapler at the top of the order makes me cry
by Marty McSuperFly on Jun 8, 2008 2:11 PM CDT reply actions
Yostian logic
By getting thrown out at 3rd, Kapler allows Braun to advance to 2nd. Braun wouldn’t be in scoring position for Fielder if Kapler hadn’t made that out at 3rd.
by Marty McSuperFly on Jun 8, 2008 2:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Kapler
That was sad.
But hey, who was then one-hopping it to third base from centerfield, but Scotty Po!

Yep

Don't you think

I think it will probably come after an LCS appearance
So I doubt you’ll be too upset.
He's extremely quick and good.
He got the first one for a .500 record
Maybe a wild card appearance would be enough for the next one

Didn't he win that after they went 81-81?

The saddest part
This followed a 2 hit, complete game shutout for Vargas
by Marty McSuperFly on Jun 8, 2008 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions
But not a no-hitter
with MLB 07, I had Ben Sheets take a no-hitter into the eighth and Reggie Abercrombie (Marlins) bunts one down the third base line, and Braun misses it and its a hit.
I now hate Reggie Abercrombie.
His trade value has never been higher.
You could probably get Matt Cain for him.

So on that 1-2 pitch that Billy took
I wonder if he thought it was out of the zone or if he was just fooled?
Nice AB from Billy
On that 1-2, he always takes that pitch. Frequently gets called out on it
by Marty McSuperFly on Jun 8, 2008 2:19 PM CDT reply actions
Wow
Nice AB by Billy.
A little odd that even though Prince was running on the pitch, he still only made it to second.

Man more Griffey trying for 600 promos going on at MLB
The death march continues. It seems like they have been hyping that for about two months now.
yes
it helps when he actually plays. In that Phils series he would get 1 pinch hit AB a day and I think they walked him 2 days in a row.
Awesome
Podsednik in the game because of his career record against Suppan (4 hits in 11 ab). I love it when opposing managers do stupid things.
by Marty McSuperFly on Jun 8, 2008 2:23 PM CDT reply actions
He will start next time we play them too
because he has thrown out Kapler 100% of the time he has tried to take third on him.
Crabbe Man
would have gotten that one in his pincers.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
So these Rockies announcers have been driving me crazy this series
I am going with Bob and Jim even though they are behind a pitch. They always are using very selective stats and stuff that obviously doesn’t matter to make a point. Adkins is hitting .425 on day games after a new moon this year.
agree
they are morons and homers. After the Crew got the first two guys on they were saying it wasn’t bad because Braun could strike out and Prince could hit into a double play.
So I have been playing around with my PITCHf/x correction factors and appling them to the strikezone
They say that the highest called strike zone is at Coors by about an inch and a half (which is actually quite large). I have a theory that because the ball doesn’t drop like it does in most parks pitchers leave a lot of pitches up throughout the game. The umpires see all of these high pitches and adjust the strike zone accordingly. Whatever the case, the PITCHf/x system at Coors is one of the worst in the league.
wow
That was a pretty frustrating first inning to watch. Looks like the bullpen is going to need to get going early and often for both sides.

Off day tomorrow
So burn the pen. Get Torres an inning no matter what the score is.
by dixieflatline on Jun 8, 2008 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Does anyone know if they use the humidor at Colorado Springs?
I wonder if the park factor there has gone down as much as Coors has?
I hate it when the pitcher swings at the first pitch
Especially our pitchers. If you are just going to make an out anyway make the other pitcher throw a few.

by dixieflatline on Jun 8, 2008 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions
So for those who were watching on MLB gameday
Here is what my corrections think about the Coor strikezone.
The Rockies have a good number of lefties in their lineup and lefties really get murdered on that outer corner (negative x) so that is pretty standard. The strange thing is the height. It appears that the umps really don’t call the low strike at Coors. Is that because they see so few balls there? I don’t know.
Yeah I don't know what to say
Honestly, all the other parks have a mean height of under 2.6 feet and Coors is above 2.7 ft. Not sure if this is a bug or a real feature yet.

5-5 down in Houston
It would be nice to see them win that game so we can get that one back from the Cards.
Very nice
Hard hit again but right at Hardy. Seems like that has happened several times today.
In other games
Phils won against in Atlanta? I think they are going to run away with that division now.
So how do the Rockies only have two hits?
It seems like they have been on base a lot and Soup has had to work out of a lot of jams. Oh yeah the five walks.
Josh Butler
The guy we got for Gabe Gross, Josh Butler, has been generally crappy so far, but had a great start today, six shutout innings with 7 K’s.

Yeah, but a lot of people still think he's really bad
The Giants nitwit was talking about how bad Ryan and Corey are. Flubbies fans refer to him as the Kosher Butcher among other things. Yet watching only about 15 Cubs games I’ve seen the fantastic Fukudome mishandle 4 or 5 balls. Yesterday or the day before he had one in his glove that he dropped.
Me too.
In defense of the nitwit, since he was sniffing around LaPorta, I think his point was that Braun, Hart, LaPorta OF would be bad defensively. While I like Hart’s defense, I think he becomes average at best in CF instead of RF.

by heybatterbatter on Jun 8, 2008 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions
I think the opposite is true
Fans seem to love Kapler and Dillon, and for some reason clamor for them to replace Cameron and Weeks. I guess the lower expectations magnify their good plays, and the mistakes are forgiven because they aren’t supposed to be any better.

by heybatterbatter on Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, I'll ride Kapler and Dillon
I don’t think they belong in the lineup, they definitely shouldn’t be 1-2, and they’re fielding hurts the team. Dillon allowed 2 balls to go by him that Weeks probably would have gotten, and blew a double play that could have ended an inning. Kapler displayed boneheaded baserunning and sloppy fielding, both of with could have cost the team runs. The fact that they each managed a couple of hits/walks shouldn’t overshadow the fact that they were responsible for negative plays.

He managed Villy well by keeping him in against Helton, and he did very well with the 2 inning save with Torres.

... keep in mind the following: Kapler ran into an out in the first inning, costing the Brewers a run. Both Kapler and Dillon also had errors that didn’t cost the Brewers the game only thanks to the pitchers managing to wiggle off the hook.
I don’t dispute that they were effective at the plate. But their performances today could have just as easily resulted in a 4-3 loss. I don’t think happenstance makes Ned a genius for plugging them into the lineup, particularly when Weeks was out because he’s unavailable due to injury.

But Dillon scored two runs
And Kapler drove him in on one. Weeks/Cameron might not have scored those runs and just struck out instead. That would show the final score as us losing 2-1. That would make any defensive/baserunning plays made by the two positions moot.
This strikes me as a silly conversation...
... but Weeks wasn’t available, and thus if you’re looking to give Yost credit (which is how this exchange started) you can’t pat him on the back for having the foresight to start Dillon over Weeks, since that wasn’t the choice he made.

Oh, I'm not giving him credit
I’m just saying that you could see it both ways. Like Marty said, Cameron could have hit a homerun. But he also could have struck out. You said that their errors could have resulted in a 4-3 loss and I’m saying that with them out it could have been a 2-1 loss. Either way, it doesn’t matter.
But, yeah, I’m not really giving Yost credit. Especially since it was Sunday, so he likes playing the bench anyway.
And instead of driving in a run with a single
and then getting thrown out on the bases, Cameron could have hit a home run to clear them. This is a fun game.
