He's extremely quick and good.

Am I missing something?

Why so much hate for Mota around the Brewers Nation? Over the entire season Mota has actually been one of the better relievers in the bullpen. If you consider a “blowup” giving up more than 1 run, he’s only had 4 the entire season, with the last two (including tonight’s) not actually causing a loss. Granted that’s not a sterling record, but it’s a lot better than I expected from Mota, and probably better than our other current options (most likely Pena included).

Is this an attempt to save face after tonight’s slightly demoralizing loss, which wasn’t even Mota’s fault in the first place?

I wouldn't mind having him still around for mop-up duty

until Suppan gets back from the DL.

This was an absolutely awful game to put him in. There were 2 innings left and the crew was only down by 1 run. I know the crew didn’t score any more runs, but a team’s mindset is different for a 5 run comeback vs a one-run to tie.

It was definitely a Gagne situation – let him get another good outing behind him (although how he was able to grove balls down the middle and get away with it like his last appearance, I don’t know) so we have a choice (other than Shouse) in high leverage situations again.

I still remember Ned saying that we need Derrek this season.

Unfortunately

If you cut a reliever every time he has a rough week, magical imaginary Rollie Fingers ghosts do not spring out of the bullpen to take his place.

Turnbow was terrible every time he pitched this season, Mota was very good for the majority of the season: no matter how much that fact hurts your scapegoating.

P.S.

Tom H wants an AAA closer to become a middle reliever? I’m not against it, I just don’t think it’s likely that Melvin would do that.

P.P.S.

“After giving up four runs tonight in one inning, he has allowed eight runs in three innings in four July appearances. And that’s after a 6.48 ERA in nine July outings.”
that’s 13 appearances in July? This is only the 9th. Proofreading Tom, proofreading.

wait...

Pena, the guy who (rightly or wrongly) developed a reputation for only pitching well this season if everything’s on the line when he comes in, i.e. it’s a save situation, but bombs whenever it isn’t? The one with the 33/24 K/BB ratio in AAA? (And it’s still only 26/16 if we exclude his wretched April stats.) Yeah, that’d work out well…

I’d rather see Dillard or DiFelice return.

That would make the most sense.

If they do DFA him, it won't be until after the game

It could be a extra-inning game and they wouldn’t want to be one guy short (no one from AAA could get here in time), even if that means keeping Mota.
