Game Thread #94: Reds (45-49) at Brewers (51-42)
Edinson Volquez brings some very sparkly full-season numbers into tonight's game, but he is coming off of three decidedly mediocre outings--against the Jays, Pirates, and Nats, no less. Seth McClung, on the other hand, has given up exactly two runs in five of his last six starts. The last one of those was even at home!
Game time is 6:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Strange
More than halfway through the season and both starting pitchers, even though they’ve been on their respective teams all year, haven’t started against their opponents yet.

Counsell leading off
No Jeff Keppinger for the Reds, but that’s only because they’ve replaced him with Adam Dunn (sadly not at short).

REDS HAVE COMEBACK WIN IN MILWAUKEE
The Reds came from three down to defeat the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday, 6-5. It was the Reds’ first road win of the season in which they trailed by three or more runs, leaving the Braves, Rockies and Mets as the only teams that have not won in that manner on the road this year.
Ick.
LOSERS SCORE FEW RUNS ON FRIDAY
The 15 losing teams in the major leagues on Friday combined to score only 23 runs, an average of 1.53 per game. That’s the second-lowest average on any day this season on which more than one game was played. On April 27 the 15 losers scored 18 runs, 1.20 per game.
Well, I feel better that our team was one of the best losers!

yeah, big surprise there :).

Volquez has 45 pitches through 2 2/3
How many pitches does Baker let him throw? I bet he gets up to 135.
The most he's thrown this year is 118

So, was the roof closed during the first?
There goes my theory. Oh, well, small sample sizes are fun.
(I wasn’t home. Yes, I missed the first part of a McClung start, shock!)
hahahaha
he had no idea where that was

Bruce
He sure has fallen off since the first week, eh?
Brent Brewer over the last week
.370/.414/.481
And only one error! (of course, he made two errors in the game before)
He's extremely quick and good.
Good job by McClung to look like a real baserunner and not do something stupid like get caught rounding the bag
He's extremely quick and good.
DiFelice left Nashville's game after two innings
Hope he’s not injured.

Whew
Another close call. By the way Braun was running, I thought that was gone.

I wonder if Volquez gets carded a lot

Taylor Green had a good game tonight, 2-3 with a walk
He had been 3-24 with one walk since the trade.
He's extremely quick and good.
I lean slightly towards Brantley
I think he has a significantly higher upside, but I’m confused by the Brewers’ repeated failure to play him in center (he’s in left tonight). If he can’t play center, he can’t play, pretty much.
He's extremely quick and good.
anybody
know why Homer Bailey fell off the face of the planet? the guy cant get anybody out in AAA and 2 yrs ago he was the cant miss prospect
he's still can't miss

I can't believe they regurgitate this "mechanical flaw" BS
Until the Brewers sign a pitcher that can move the ball with his mind, the entire process of throwing a baseball is mechanical. So, if the ball is going in bad places, it’s obviously a mechanical problem. For everyone. Every time the ball goes in the wrong place. Until they sign the telekinesis guy. There’s absolutely no value to saying something is a mechanical problem.

I believe the technical term for that mechanical flaw is “sucking at pitching”

On RR, we have a guy who says that all the time.
He thinks Homer is not “extending” enough or some such.
Just look up “Johnnypronto.”

crazy idea
DFA Mota and invent a season ending injury for Gagne and move on. Bring up DiFelice and either Dillard or Pena.
Is it because its too much of an admission of failure by Melvin that it doesn’t happen?
Maybe not so crazy
DiFelice got pulled from his start tonight after two innings and 32 pitches. No apparent injury, from what I could tell. My only guess is that he was traded or called up.
Now would be a bizarre time to call him up
It’s unlikely he’d be able to pitch tomorrow anyway even if he was with the team, so save some money and put him on the roster on Wednesday.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
According to the Sounds website
he was pulled for “undisclosed reasons.” I don’t think it was an injury, considering that the relief pitcher started warming up during the top half of the second (if they thought he had been hurt, the reliever would have started warming up after he got back in the dugout or the trainer would have come out there.) Then, after the Sounds took the field in the third inning, DiFelice and two other players went out to the clubhouse with what appeared to be a police officer or security guard. I checked and, no, he’s not in jail.
Could have been a family emergency, I guess.
TheJay’s right. Calling him up now doesn’t make a lot of sense, particularly since Villy and Torres are available today, not to mention Parra or Bush if things get out of hand. It would explain the use of Mota in the 9th yesterday though, which struck me as odd. I thought they might leave Gagne out there to get shelled rather than use another pitcher and bringing in Mota to keep things from getting out of hand doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Ah but what do I know? Ned said after the game he was encouraged by Gagne’s outing even though he was responsible for 4 runs in the 9th. Maybe he expected Gagne to give up 6 runs, so 4 was a pleasant surprise.

I wasn't really talking about getting them up here for tomorrow
rather going forward with the rest of the season.
We were both wrong
From the Tennessean this morning: “Sounds pitcher Mark DiFelice left Saturday’s game after two innings with an apparent but undisclosed injury. He was escorted to the clubhouse by trainer Jeff Paxson.”
i don't remember
affeldt ever throwing that hard before

Geez
The Reds and Astros are the only two NL Central teams with a decent bullpen today. The Cardinals just blew a four-run lead in the ninth.

Here's an interesting question that I hate even thinking
If the Brewers totally bomb the next 3 weeks, something crazy like lose 12 out of 15, do they put Sheets and Sabathia on the trading blocks?
The only way that should happen,
Is if those two are both injured….
So then we couldn’t trade them anyway…
Suck
that was a fun one to witness live :(
The crowd was pretty electric in anticipation of a Branyan 3-1 homer in the seventh… but he couldn’t convert.
Also, Cubs, what the hell?
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
