Game Thread #95: Reds (46-49) at Brewers (51-43)

Thanks to an amazing comeback from the Pirates yesterday, the Brewers stayed within a half game of the wild card lead.  It'd be nicer to stay in it by winning a game now and then.

Today, the ball goes back into CC Sabathia's hand, while the Reds turn to Homer Bailey.

Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Hall starting at third against the righty. I wonder if that’s because Branyan’s 2 for his last 26. Hart also has the day off – Kapler starting in right.

Andy Phillips is starting for the Reds at first and Hairston is in his third position of the series (RF).

CC

Kendall's 0 for his last 20

I hadn’t noticed that. He hit really well for a month before this stretch.

i just don't understand

why yost won’t play rivera more.

not only for hitting but to keep kendall from wearing down

yes, Rivera needs to play more

I can’t believe he didn’t pinch hit him in the 9th on Friday. Kendall was a free out for the Reds.

by molitorfan on Jul 13, 2008 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Not playing Rivera is one issue

But not pinch hitting is completely another. Really what are the chances that in the little part of the game left that Rivera goes down with an injury? You can’t plan your whole strategy over a 0.01% chance.

But what are the odds that Rivera hits into a triple play?

You really can’t just throw these ideas out there without considering all the possible downsides.

by Marty McSuperFly on Jul 13, 2008 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

what are the odds

that he hits into a triple play and gets injured doing it?

by molitorfan on Jul 13, 2008 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly;) look at the game logs, suggested Rivera pinch-hit for Kendall or the pitcher

several times about a month ago

it’s really a no-brainer. if rivera manages to get the lead/tie AND get injured in the process (or the next half inning), Craig Counsell is on our depth charts for catcher and Joe Dillon could probably stand in in a pinch. If he gets injured that AB, game is over anyway, call up a warm body from AA/AAA.

sure, Counsell’d probably just let the pitcher throw whatever they wanted, but they would probably be able to block the ball provided it didn’t have too much vertical movement. Ie, catching gagne would be a snap.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jul 13, 2008 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Kendall's started 140+ games a lot in his career

So he might not be wearing down.

He may play more after the rotation change

From what I can tell, Kendall is catching Parra and McClung because he’s coaching them through learning how to pitch better. Sheets and Sabathia already know how to pitch. I haven’t heard about Kendall working with Bush.

by morineko on Jul 13, 2008 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions

...or not

There was some talke he might be optioned to AAA after yesterday

That would be awesome if a cubs AAA player got to play in the all star game. I mean the Cubs got robbed with now only 8 players named to the roster. I mean if Marmol and his ERA over 4 is on the team then shouldn’t Howry/Cotts/Lieber/Wuetrz be there too? What about DeRosa, Theriot and Fontentot? They should have had like 14 players
