U.S. Olympic Roster Announced
No Brewers, but Matt LaPorta is on the team. LaPorta, along with Colby Rasmus and college pitcher Stephen Strasburg, is among the biggest prospects on the team, which has more than its share of non-prospects.

Terry Tiffee???
Really??? Ok, I mean why not someone that’s actually, you know, good.

Geno Espineli? What? I thought for sure the only Giants prospect to make it would be Nate Schierholtz, and he did not make it.
Espineli is a fine choice for the team, can both start and relieve, but….wow talk about one I didn’t see coming.

Haha, Nate Schierholtz is really considered a Giants prospect?
I thought him making the Futures Game was just one of those things. He’s, uh, not particularly good.

A guy who can hit for power and hit in the gaps is not particularly good? That’s news to me.

Okay, so he IS a Giants prospect
But he’s not that good.
Nate Schierholtz. One of the USA Baseball guys, Schierholtz has to hold some kind of mark for most MLB experience for guys in the Futures Game. He was a regular during two stretches for the Giants last year, and barely has his rookie eligibility. He also can’t really hit, with a Lance Niekro skill set that produces some decent batting averages and little else. It was really weird seeing him here, and he wasn’t even the oldest guy on the team.”Joe Sheehan
Schierholtz is an overly aggressive hacker, and many scouts peg him as a 4A hitter who will get eaten up by big-league chase pitches over the long haul. While he’s altered his swing mechanics since early in his career, he still has a significant bat wrap that leaves questions as to his ability to get his bat into the zone quickly.Kevin Goldstein
Sorry for the snark, though.

I do have concerns about his ability to hit for power in SF. Lefties just can’t do it. It’s also the state of the system. Next to a good minor league system like Milwaukee’s, Nate Schierholtz is like getting cat food on your plate when you ordered mahi mahi. The Giants system has improved dramatically in the last few years but there’s still a long way to go.
I’d just rather see him in right field than the parade of garbage the Giants put out there year in and year out. It’s cheaper and who knows, he might put something together. I saw him hit in the Arizona Fall League last year for five games and he did put it together. He was driving balls into the gaps and working counts. But small sample sizes can doom you.

You were at the AFL?
You didn’t happen to attend Ron Shandler’s event, did you?

I did not. I went to the AFL as working media and called the press box at Scottsdale Stadium my home base for the week. Was pretty cool, got to meet Lisa Winston of MiLB.com. You know that stereotype of when two women get together, all they do is talk? That was us, but gabbing about baseball and prospects and being in sports media.
Didn’t even know Shandler was having a thing there! I am kicking myself that I missed it. When was it? I was there the final week of the season.

That looks very cool. It’s very unlikely I can make it this year, costs and the fall semester workload are just too much for me to take a few days off and go. I hope the next time I am sent to the AFL as media I can get into one of these events.

He makes a mean cheesesteak. I recommend the cheese whiz.

Let’s hope he serves up cheesesteaks and not home runs.

keep in mind...
this isn’t anybody’s idea of who the best prospects are. US Baseball had to get approval from the teams for every single one of these players, which may be (I don’t know) why Schierholtz isn’t there. Since he could theoretically be useful to the Giants in August (I know, why, right?) they might not have made him available. I suspect the same is true of, say, Tony Gwynn and [trying to think of another useful player in Nashville] Tim Dillard.
Also, cheese.

The thing about Schierholtz all season was why he wasn’t with the big club. First it was keeping him in AAA to get him playing time. Then it was keeping him in AAA because he had an excellent chance to make the Olympic team. Now…I really don’t know what the deal is. If the Giants are keeping him from the roster that’s all well and good, but why? Unless they’re trading Winn and will thus need Schierholtz in August I don’t see the point of holding him back.

Delay his service time?
Maybe they don’t want to waste any of the 6 years they’ll have him on a non-playoff team?

The ETA for Giants contention is around 2011…Nate will have rotted in Fresno by then.

At any rate I apologize for turning this into the Nate Schierholtz show. It is good to hear what other people are saying.

I have no opinion actually! I never got the appeal even when they were popular. My reaction to their reunion is “oh that’s nice for them.”

Are there more players to announce?
I only see 23 on the roster.
Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.
