Happy Recondite Birthday (in advance)

TheJay's blog, Recondite Baseball, turns one year old in a scant three weeks.   (The odds of my remembering  on the day itself are pretty slim, so I thought I'd do this now.  Leaves everyone enough time to buy a present.)

No small feat, that:

Several studies indicate that most blogs are abandoned soon after creation (with 60% to 80% abandoned within one month, depending on whose figures you choose to believe) and that few are regularly updated.

[snip]

The Perseus report noted above indicates that 66.0% of surveyed blogs had not been updated in two months, "representing 2.72 million blogs that have been either permanently or temporarily abandoned".

Anyway, here's my present:

In the brief history of Miller Park, only six players have recorded five or more hits in one game.  Of those six, only one was a Brewer, although a future (and now ex-) Brewer also accomplished the feat.   (Feel free to guess who those two were; click the link to see the full data.)

Only one out of the six, Geoff Blum, did not have a home run as one of his five hits.  This was fortunate for the Brewers, as Blum was the only player in the list to get five hits yet lose the game. The Astros lost 3-2, and not once did Blum come around to score.

TheJay had his actual, human birthday just a couple days ago too

TheJay is human?

Pretend they're one snappy comment

instead of two semi-snappy ones.

Actually, “snappy” is a pretty addictive word to type.

it happened 31 times at County

(Brewers and Milwaukee Braves)

Luckily, Fulton County isn’t included with “county stadium” or I’d have to subtract the other Braves

oooh...

4 6 hit performances.
all of those were 6 for 6, although one had 7 PAs. I don’t see number of innings anywhere within the display.

I was at Kirby Puckett's

He robbed Yount of a grand slam that same game.

I won't give the answer away, because I cheated and looked it up, but I will note this:

Richie Sexson is the only player ever to strike out 5 times in a game at Miller Park.

Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.

Also

Dave Bush’s 13 strikeout game from a week ago was tied for the third highest total in Miller Park history. Four pitchers have recorded exactly 13 K’s in a game at Miller Park, but Bush is the only one who got a win.

Nice tag

Thank you for drawing attention to the fact my blog is almost a year old (I didn’t notice).

It’s weird that Blum had five hits in that game and neither scored nor drove in a run. That’s one of only eighteen times a player has had five or more hits with 0 runs and 0 RBI in a game since 1956.

It's worth noting

Dixieflatline’s blog is about a year old, too, and that’s where all the cool pitching plots and other neat things (like the pitch location of all eleven hits by lefties off Brian Shouse this year) come from.

Featured Poll

Poll
Who is the Brewers' top prospect?
  • Brett Lawrie - Cana-DUH!
  • Mat Gamel - A great pure hitter who could potentially play a position of need.
  • Alcides Escobar - The Brewers sorely need his defensive wizardry and contact-hitting approach. He also solves the 3B hole by shifting J.J. over.
  • Jonathan Lucroy - The best catching prospect in the system by virtue of the fact that he can actually catch. His hitting numbers at Brevard are very good on the face of it, but even better after accounting for Space Coast Stadium.
  • Angel Salome - He's leading a Huntsville team that's loaded with prospects in all three slash stats, and he has the tools to be a good defensive catcher.
  • Jeremy Jeffress - The only real pitching prospect in a sea of hitters, Jeffress could potentially ease the pain of losing two aces by blossoming into one himself.
  • Carlos George - Hey, Derek Jeter can't play defense either.
