Game Thread #96: Brewers (52-43) at Giants (40-55)
Hey, look at this--we're opening the second half with quite the pitcher's duel. The 2008 Brewers ace versus the 2009 Brewers ace! (Maybe. Kind of. Please?)
CC Sabathia takes the hill with his Marcel-projected 3.21 ERA while Matt Cain counters with his 3.7 runs of average run support. Just think how happy he will be in the Milwaukee rotation.
Game time is 9:15 CT, and thankfully it's the only night game of the series. Here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Will we someday see a Matt Cain pitched
1-0 shutout Brewers win in which the only Brewer run is scored on a home run by Lorenzo Cain?
If this scenario was indeed the case, I would not want to face the Brewers if my last name was Abel.

In enemy territory
I’m “stuck” in Sonoma tonight, so I’ll get to watch the game on the local SF station.
Oddly enough, I was at a winery today that sold NFL and MLB-logo wine carriers. They had the Raiders, 49ers, and A’s. But not the Giants. Maybe the locals too realize that the Giants suck.
BTW, I’ve had way too much wine today.
Beer is still better, at least for watching baseball.

Jeff's post about the 2009 Ace
Are we rumored to get Cain or is it wishful thinking? I put in over 70 hours at work this week so I’m just a bit out of the loop.

totally speculation on my part
that said, I think it’s inevitable that, with CC and Sheets out the door, this offseason will bring a blockbuster trade involving Cain or Greinke (or someone similar), probably in exchange for Hardy and something else.

Wow
The Red Sox are really close to signing Alex Meyer:
The most shocking rumor floating around at this time is that the Red Sox are also very close to signing 20th-round pick Alex Meyer. The six-foot-seven power righty from Indiana has first-round stuff, but he was considered all but unsignable due to the Boras factor and a strong commitment to the University of Kentucky. The hottest rumor among scouting circles has $2 million looking like it will take care of both those issues.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Melville is supposed to sign too
Sources indicate that Missouri high school right-hander Tim Melville, who fell to the fourth round when he indicated before the draft that he wanted mid-first-round money to sign, will get just that and sign with the Royals for more than $1 million.

did you happen to watch the whole ASG? I’m curious if Hart’s throw was even remotely close on the winning sac fly
Just a little up the first base line
it was a close play. Very few RFers would’ve made the throw. McCann got it on two bounces.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
Yeah, it was close
But it was a weak two-hopper to the wrong side of the plate. A strong throw would have got him.

Seriously
I wonder why Beane hasn’t dealt him yet. He has to be at the absolute zenith of his value right now.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
I was about to say,
“because he has two more years under team control, and the A’s could contend in 2010”
but that would be wrong. He’s a FA after 2009, if I read Cot’s correctly. So yeah, maybe everybody came calling for Duke, and Beane said, “for the lousy prospect package you’re offering, I’ll give you the chubby innings eater or the injured dude.”

Just imagine the system they'll have if they do deal Duke
Just the Haren deal alone was obscene. Would they be the first team to ever trade 80% of their rotation in less than a season?

Now, whether Ozzie should be in, or whether he should be used as an argument to let others in, that’s another story. That tends to be the problem in keeping the hall small—every time a marginal player is elected, he serves as the cause for electing two or three marginal guys, and so on.
