Salome, Ford, Nelson to Giants for Taschner, Durham, and PTBNL?
WSSP 1250 AM in Milwaukee is reporting that Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants are close to a deal that would send Milwaukee's Double A Catcher Angel Salome, Single A prospect Outfielder/speedster Darren Ford, and Triple A First Baseman Brad Nelson to the Giants for Second Baseman Ray Durham, Reliever Jack Taschner, and a PTBNL.Here is the link to the Brewers Beat Writer Tom Haudicourt's blog at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal. Where he talks about the possible trade.:
Angel Salome sounds pretty good. You guys should be happy with Durham- he sucked last year, but in '06, he was money, and he seems to be heading that way again, but with more focus on OBP and less on SLG. Taschner is a great young lefty reliever who is still learning. The PTBNL is rumored to be Matt Downs or Travis Denker. Personally, I hope it's not Downs, because he's a young infielder who can hit- something the Giants need more of. Denker is a little less of a hitter, but is also an infielder.
[Note by battlekow, 07/20/08 1:31 AM CDT ] SI's Jon Heyman on the situation:
A deal that would send Taschner (2-1, 3.03) and veteran second baseman Ray Durham from San Francisco to Milwaukee is "in the wind,'' according to a National League executive. The Wisconsin Sports Bar isn't gonna be happy about that...It was reported in the Journal Sentinel that a Brewers' minor leaguer, Class-A Brevard outfielder Darren Ford, was removed from a game Saturday, and that paper speculated he could be dealt soon, perhaps to San Francisco. Triple-A first baseman Brad Nelson, who has 12 homers and is batting .301, could be another player who'd interest the Giants.
With young Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks playing better lately, it is believed Durham would serve as a utilityman in Milwaukee and possible second-base insurance in case Weeks went back into a hitting funk. The Brewers are being patient with Weeks since he was a No. 2 pick overall. Durham wouldn't be much of an upgrade over Weeks defensively. But as one NL scout said, "He gives you a good at-bat."
Taschner, a native of Racine, Wis. likely would be thrilled to go to his home state team. The lefthanded Taschner is known to be a huge Packers fan and even bigger Brett Favre fan.
[Note by battlekow, 07/20/08 2:08 PM CDT ] The latest update:
So, here's the latest word: The Brewers are just getting Giants second baseman Ray Durham, not reliever Jack Taschner.I completely agree with Jeff's take. I've been touting Hammond for awhile now, and he as more value than you (or Doug Melvin, apparently) think. So, apparently, its minor league outfielder Darren Ford and minor league pitcher Steve Hammond for Durham.

I think a deal is very possible with Taschner and Durham, but there is almost no way that Salome is involved in my opinion.

It would surprise me as well
Melvin said he wasn’t going to overpay for tweaks; Durham and Tascher are just that, tweaks, and Salome would be an overpay.

yeah...
while we’re at it, I don’t get the interest in Taschner. He’s having a good year, but he was downright bad last year. He probably isn’t a much better bet than Stetter for the rest of the year, and he might not be much better than Choate, either.
And Durham…I guess he’s a better bench bat than Dillon, but I just don’t see the point in that kind of trade. If we need a bench bat for September/postseason, we’ll have Gamel in Sept, and we might be able to sneak him onto the postseason roster somehow as well.
Also, cheese.

talking to myself
In response to the original post, Taschner isn’t young-he turned 30 in April. I wouldn’t agree that he’s learning-his K/BB ratio has been more or less identical since he broke into the bigs. His xFIP is 4.87 this year, 4.81 last year.
I wouldn’t care that much if this were true—we’re trading spare parts for spare parts, since I don’t think Salome has much of a future in the NL, and Ford isn’t likely to become more than a pinch-runner/defensive replacement. The only positive I’d take from it, though, is that Melvin and Sabean are talking, and maybe they’ll keep talking in the offseason.

and since I haven't said enough...
if we’re going to get a reliever and a middle-infielder/pinch-hitter in the same trade, one of whom is a local boy, let’s get Grudz and Ron Mahay from the Royals. At least Salome could DH for the Royals…

I tried to clear it up at McCovey Chronicles
This is the same station that reported we had Adam Dunn last year for Matt Wise. I’m thinking a radio guy mentioned Salome because he’s not in the lineup because of the suspension, and someone interpreted it wrong it got translated a couple times.
I have no problem with picking up Durham if the cost is only Ford or something.

Yeah, and just to be clear
Because, uh, certain other Brewers blogs seem to not understand, the Stars’ suspensions from the brawl were staggered, so that’s why Michael Brantley is playing and Salome isn’t.

Duh, he's from Wisconsin!
Just like Jarrod Washburn, only Taschner is actually from Milwaukee!!!!! Yay!!!!! The conquering hometown hero we’ve been waiting for since Jim Gantner!!!!!!
Seriously though, Taschner at least was striking people out last year. He’s cut his walk rate, but also his K rate, and his hits have gone up. I’d rather have last year’s peripherals.

Sounds plausible
On the surface, anyway. Not sure how I would feel about giving up Salome, but getting Durham and Taschner seems plausible considering the front office’s affinity for acquiring Wisconsin natives as well as turning the Brewers into the blackest team in baseball.

Salome doesn't make sense
not only would it be overpaying, but didnt the giants just draft buster posey…a nearly “cant-miss” catching prospect?
by marty22 on Jul 20, 2008 2:03 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Well, first they have to sign him
Supposedly he’s still asking for a $10M Major League contract, and the Giants are not really thrilled about it.

What in the world...
What would be the point of this trade – Taschner isn’t much of an improvement over any of our relievers and isn’t Durham basically Craig Counsell but without the versatility or superior defense?

There are two kinds of fans now...
There are Packer fans, and there are Favre fans. The Packer fans know it’s a business, and the Favre fans know 17 years of history. Personally, after watching the Brewers become such a high-quality small market team, and given my business background, I like being a Packer fan.

Agreed I consider myself a Packers fan also
But as I have stated there is a percentage of fans in Wisconsin who live in the past no matter what. I am sure that if Robin Yount decided to attempt a comeback there is a fair number of Brewers fans who would demand he be allowed to patrol Centerfield just because of who he is ;)

Get ready for years of losing to satisfy Ted Thompson’s ego. The team’s actions are beyond idiotic.

I dont hate Brett
I just think his time has passed that is the final thing I am going to say on that I am not talking about it at my own site not going to do it here.
But I will ask you this Pete if this were the 4 and 12 season would you be so hot to let him come back we did not win that year with him what makes you think he is the answer now
Brett did not get better the Packers Team got better that is what lead to last season
Now I am done

“His time has passed.” That’s bizarre considering he was among the best quarterbacks in the world last year if not arguable the best. If his time has passed, its not as a football player, its as an employee of a GM whose ego doesn’t allow him to continue.
Last years team may not have even been a .500 team with just an average quarterback. I doubt you could find anyone other than Favre haters who would disagree. If Thompson’s gambit works, they won’t be over .500 and then the talk about next year can start. Then some sort of “building for the future” dishonesty will dominate. Eventually Thompson will be gone. Good riddance.

I know
I mean how Brett managed to turn a 4-12 team into a 13-3 team in two years with zero help from TT is beyond me. Lets have him as the league’s first QB/GM

I just wonder when TT developed this massive ego that is preventing Favre’s return. Was it after he accepted Brett’s return with open arms at the end of March only to have Brett change his mind again and then a week later tell the press that coming back was the farthest thing from his mind?

Which, btw, the Brewers have to be thrilled about this Favre talk. Brett finally retires and the Brewers are making a serious push to make the playoffs for the first time in a generation and they still can’t escape him and get the headlines.

According to Baseball Tonight (umm... Today)
Buster Olney called in and said “The deal is done.” According to JS, it could be Ray Durham and Jack Taschner for just Ford and Steve Hammond.
by Hyatt on Jul 20, 2008 11:41 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
That's pretty stupid
Ford, a total tools bomb, something the Giants collect like they don’t know there’s a draft, should be all it takes to get a salary dump of an aging second baseman. That means that Hammond is being included just to acquire…Jack Taschner? Hammond is already a more valuable pitcher than Jack Taschner. I’ll wait til the full details come out, though, before I spew venom.

Wonder where the roster spots are coming from?
They have a spot on the 40 man to take on Durham, and I would imagine Dillon is being sent down to make room on the 25 man roster, but where are they coming up with room for Taschner, especially when they will need to make another roster move for Suppan in the next week? I hope Turnbow saved his realtor’s business card, Mota is gonna need it.

I am confused
How does moving Pena make room on the 25 man roster? They have to move three players off the 25 man roster, and one off the 40 man unless they take Gamel’s spot that Cappy has been nobly holding down all season. It seems the easiest moves to make is Dillon and Stetter go down and Mota is DFA’d/traded.

Linky. Looks like we might be getting some cash in the trade which makes me feel a little better. Still no word on who is involved. This sure seems like a pretty lateral move to me. I kind of liked Stetter.

It's Just Durham
Taschner is not involved in the deal according to Tom H.
by Hyatt on Jul 20, 2008 12:37 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Lame.
Gut reaction: This is the kind of deal that illustrates why Doug Melvin is a good GM, but not a great GM. (This deal = “not great.” Not even good. The “good” comes from his track record.) Guys like Hammond don’t seem like much-they get reps as B minus prospects and “4th starter ceiling”—but you know what? those guys have a ton of value, if only as insurance. Hammond would be nearly as good as Taschner, and as a starter, he means you don’t have to muck around with guys like Jeff Weaver. GMs like Beane and Mark Shapiro seem to never give up these guys.
Ford I’m happy to part with—he’s the sort of guy the Giants overvalue. So fine. But, for a bench bat with next to no defensive value? Honestly, I’d rather have Richie Sexson.
Also, cheese.

Durham vs. Weeks
I like the acquisition of Durham if it means that lefty stick off the bench that they need. I don’t want to see him get significant ABs from Weeks however.
It should be noted that Durham’s BABIP is over .350 last I checked, and there should be some serious regression to the mean (ie. correction) in his BA.
by badgermaniac on Jul 20, 2008 1:16 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm not the biggest ray Durham fan in the world either
but we have been waiting for Weeks to progress to the mean for some time. I don’t want Durham as the everyday 2B by any means but if they trade for him just to be a situational pinch-hitter and utility guy then I don’t get the point. He’s essentially Craig Counsell then

not much as a lefty bat, though.
if he could be the branyan to rickie’s Hall (or vice versa), I’d be happy about this.
But Durham’s a switch-hitter, and his career platoon splits are about equal. His 08 splits look like those of a lefty, but the much bigger sample of 05-07 looks like those of a righty.
As jihad points out, Nelson is a reasonable comparison—I don’t want Nelson starting, and he can’t play a crappy second base, but he’s OPSing better than 950 against RHP in AAA.
Also, cheese.
