Game Thread #84: Brewers (45-38) at D-backs (42-42)
Matchup is Seth McClung and Yusmeiro Petit. We're back within 5 of the division lead, but as long as the Cubs are playing the Giants, we'll need to keep winning to stay there.
Game time is 8:40 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Pat Venditte, the favorite Yankee prospect of BCB (is there such an animal?) inspired a rule change
The pitcher must visually indicate to the umpire, batter and runner(s) which way he will begin pitching to the batter. Engaging the rubber with the glove on a particular hand is considered a definitive commitment to which arm he will throw with. The batter will then choose which side of the plate he will bat from. That’s the opposite of what happened in Venditte’s (in)famous debut.
He's extremely quick and good.
Brett Wallace
The famously big-assed ASU 3B that the Cardinals drafted with the 13th pick this year is making his pro debut tonight for Quad Cities. If he had still been around when the Brewers were on the board, it would have been interesting. You’ll probably see him in the big leagues by 2010. He can really hit.
He's extremely quick and good.
Jay Bruce has already homered twice in two innings
Pirates were ahead 4-0 after one, now behind 5-4 after two.
He's extremely quick and good.
No Braun tonight
Counsell replaces Weeks atop the lineup. Hart is third. Kapler gets the start in left.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Is this lineup worse than yesterdays?
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.
Yesterday's lineup wasn't bad
My only question about yesterday was having Kendall in the same lineup as Rivera, considering all the Things Happening to Catchers this week.
However, Rivera was ace at 1st, Hall had his good D glove on as well, and the actual failure point of the lineup was having Jeff Suppan involved in it.
Lorenzo Cain just hit a three-run homer
He’s as primed for a breakout next year at Huntsville as anyone in the system.
He's extremely quick and good.
All-Star voting ending tonight
Doesn’t “This time it counts!!!!” just encourage you to vote for the crappy players in the league that your team isn’t in? That way your league is more likely to win, and you help your team should they make the World Series. Are we supposed to have more honor than that? Because I sure don’t.
He's extremely quick and good.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of
Just goes to show how stupid the home field rule is.

Plus the NL is at a disadvantage
Two more teams to include on the roster means more chances for the Lance Carters and Mark Redmans to clutter things up.

What I don't get about the Sox
Pedroia’s good, to be sure (wish we had him, but only if he knocks off his constant repositioning of his batting gloves) but what the heck is up with Daisuke Matsuzaka? Right now, he’s walked four, given up two hits, and managed to only give up one run. That defense behind him must be something else or he’s just been incredibly lucky this year.
2 Doubles?
I am surprised he didn’t stop at 1st… he could have had his cycle!
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

From Rotoworld
Pirates placed RHP Matt Capps on the 15-day disabled list with bursitis in his right shoulder and internal rotation deficit.
Isn’t an “internal rotation deficit” what forced the Yankees to sign Sidney Ponson?

He was working really hard this past weekend on attempting to field ground balls. Unfortunately he still falls over himself about 60% of the time.
I was at the Dome this weekend
I came early to watch BP. I don’t know, honestly, if he was goofing around out there or trying to make good attempts at fielding.
Granny was at home watching the games. ;)
Ah hell, Craig
Good job with the recovery there, but that was terrible.
He's extremely quick and good.
On the bright side
At least Owings isn’t batting here.

I haven't seen
a Brewers bench clearing in some time. Might as well make it interesting.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Other than McClung?
So how bad did he look out there? (I’m stuck watching the Sox at Rays, sort of…)
His command is iffy
They keep saying he has a “dead arm”. I guess it’s a good thing that he’s still sitting at 93 and touching 95 with a dead arm. Getting the hit batter/inning ratio below two would be good.
He's extremely quick and good.
.........
dead? at 95?
in any case, his control’s always been dodgy except for June 2008, so how would one be able to tell?
Dunno, but he seems okay
Can’t really hold the two bunt singles against him. The double that Hudson just hit, though, you can.
He's extremely quick and good.
Rats
Trenni put something on to keep warm, and I missed the hi-beams earlier….
I don't understand.
The Rock was just talking about how he thought Rivera’s DP ball was foul? What does it matter? Regardless of where the out is made, if you’re thrown or tagged out, you’re out. I mean, players can tag up on a foulout in the out field. Can anyone explain why he’d make such a point of that?
Perhaps...
He’s only referring to the downside of not catching it? So, let’s say it’s foul and he misses it. No loss. If it’s fair and he misses it, big trouble.
I didn’t hear the comment (DirecTV going in and out here with the weather…)
Though..
The Rock was great in the Reno 911 movie.

OT: AA all-stars
I heard that 10 players from Huntsville are in the AS game. Anyone know what the next highest is? What’s the usual yearly high?
They're only sending six though
Joe Bateman & Steve Hammond got promoted to AAA, and Gamel & LaPorta are going to the Futures Game.

Hey Laurel, this is what a real team looks like.
Thanks for the memories.
The Brewers batters..
Apparently realize the negative effect McClung is having on the game length and are trying to speed it up accordingly.
They frequently preform well against better left handed pitchers
by dixieflatline on Jul 2, 2008 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions
So clearly McClung doesn't have it today
But still only 2 runs. Really could have been one run (though it easily could have been 6). Certainly a good sign for him as a starter.
Hey mark mulder is still alive
And not pitching well. 5-5 mets and cards first and 3rd with one out still for the mets.
For now
It is the Giants though. Lincecum pitching tomorrow so that is the game for the Giants to win.

I like Daron and Gracie, well he has some issues, but there is some signal in the noise.
So do we pinch hit for Russ here?
He can’t hit lefties but it is only the 7th. He could easily come up again.

Rough night for the fantasy team
I’ll happily take the era from Pena, but leaving Pedroia, JD Drew, and Bruce on the bench hurts a tiny bit.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
I do, but it's a deep league and thats the only position I could get to produce for awhile
Kendricks at 2nd, Hart Guillen Guerrero and Victorino in OF and Utility spot. I was thinking Kazmir would’ve been a little more effective.

Easy
Riske has been our third-best reliever by WXRL. Your boy DiFelice hasn’t done anything in any meaningful spot that I can remember.
Riske has to be the 8th inning guy. Assuming he’s not still hurt somehow…
by James Stanley Cocanower on Jul 2, 2008 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions
WXRL reflects how they've been used
They’re both allowing a hit an inning, and DiFelice has a radically better K/BB.
He's extremely quick and good.
...
of course it reflects how they’ve been used—it also reflects how Mota and Gagne have been used. They don’t rate as third-best. are you totally discounting the impact of leverage on a pitcher’s performance?
by James Stanley Cocanower on Jul 2, 2008 11:26 PM CDT up reply actions
...no
What are you talking about, dude? Riske has been used in much higher-leverage situations than DiFelice was while up because of the perception of their relative talents, not their actual performances. I think DiFelice would make approximately as good a reliever as Riske, for 1/12 the price. WXRL has nothing to say about that.
He's extremely quick and good.
you're assuming
DiFelice’s results would have been precisely the same if he’d pitched in Riske’s situations. That’s a significant assumption.
by James Stanley Cocanower on Jul 2, 2008 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions
And you're assuming that BP's replacement level is anything approaching useful
He's extremely quick and good.
so
now we’re throwing out the stat that adjusts for batters faced, situations, ballparks, etc etc etc in favor of “DiFelice has a better K/BB rate during his MLB cup-of-coffee”? Call me crazy, but I’m more comfortable with the former.
In any event, why can’t we have both? Is Riske’s 2.5 mil a year or whatever it is really so egregious? Such a terrible waste of funds? Its not like the guy is making Coco Cordero money.
by James Stanley Cocanower on Jul 2, 2008 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions
in any event
i was less interested in attacking DiFelice than in defending Riske. He’ll prove worth it in the end.
