Game Thread #98: Brewers (54-43) at Giants (40-57)
For the first time in the series, the pitching matchup appears to favor the other guys--Manny Parra goes against Tim Lincecum. Lincecum missed the All-Star Game due to flu-like symptoms, but it sounds like he's ok.
You've probably noticed, but Parra has been impressive of late. Lincecum may have a 2.57 season ERA and a 3.33 mark in his last 7 starts, but Parra's at 2.68 in those same last 7. It's asking a lot to expect Parra to keep pitching like this, but even his regression-happy Marcel projection puts him under 4.00 for the rest of the season.
Game time is 3:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

today’s game is not on the Extra Innings schedule so it will be a Uecker day for me. Too bad, I was looking forward to watching Lincecum pitch after that SI article about his delivery.

Meanwhile, just to make you hate the Cubs even more, Jeff Samardzija is turning in his fourth straight good performance at AAA. He might finally be figuring out how to use his great stuff, which is bad news for us.

The Cards seem to be struggling to fill the stadium.
It seems to be only about 2/3 full, if that which is not good considering how well the team is doing

I could see it was sunny but did not realise is was that hot
I can understand why people might have given the game a miss today
It never reaches much above 80 here never mind 100+
Scott Baker had a perfect game going in the 6th
Then Taylor Teagarden (what is that, like the fourth young catcher the Rangers have on their 40-man?) homered-his first Major League hit-and Baker not only lost the perfect game/no-hitter/shutout, but also the lead.

You should automatically lose games in which your top pitching prospect gives up a two-run homer to the opposing pitcher
Just by default, you know?
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Can someone explain what the point of the Durham trade is
Because unless they think he is going to start instead of Weeks then it seems that we have just replaced Joe Dillon on the bench.
Surely we are not going to keep Durham at the end of the year so why have we given up 2 marginal prospects for somebody who might only get a few AB’s a week and get paid millions for doing so.
Obviously if Weeks gets hurt (always a chance going by his history) then we have a better back up plan but you cant make trades just for that sort of eventuality can you?
I can't explain it
6 years of a durable lefty 4th starter seems many orders of magnitude more valuable than a few hundred (maybe) at-bats from Ray Durham.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
There is only 74 games left after today
Durham will be lucky to get 150 AB’s at most and quiet possibly less than 100

On the bright side
Despite the Cards’ sweep, they haven’t really looked all that great at home against the team with the worst record in the majors. Every win was a come-from-behind, and they won’t get nearly as many chances against us as they did against the Pads. And, both CC and Ben (sounds like a 1970’s era buddy cop movie) will be pitching.

I have nothing against Yost, and my spouting out of Yosted, is out of frusteration ATM. But I would never advocate not using your closer in a 3 run game. That’s just silly.
It's silly to not use your closer in a three-run game?
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
One silly thing does not justify another silly thing
Any reliever on our team should be able to get three outs on the Giants before giving up three runs.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Not using your pretty well rested closer in a save situation IS silly.
Silly even to argue that. Only thing I can think of is your fantasy team is facing Torres.
Actually, Torres is on my fantasy team
And I’m curious how you’re so prescient that you know Torres won’t be needed in three straight games in St. Louis or something. Good to know you’ve bought in completely to the bizarre save-driven usage that’s so prevalent in baseball.
