Game Thread #98: Brewers (54-43) at Giants (40-57)

For the first time in the series, the pitching matchup appears to favor the other guys--Manny Parra goes against Tim Lincecum.  Lincecum missed the All-Star Game due to flu-like symptoms, but it sounds like he's ok.

You've probably noticed, but Parra has been impressive of late.  Lincecum may have a 2.57 season ERA and a 3.33 mark in his last 7 starts, but Parra's at 2.68 in those same last 7.  It's asking a lot to expect Parra to keep pitching like this, but even his regression-happy Marcel projection puts him under 4.00 for the rest of the season.

Game time is 3:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

We should try to jump out early, he should be rusty after not pitching in what – 8 or 9 days? Of course you could say the same thing about our guy.

Extra Innings

today’s game is not on the Extra Innings schedule so it will be a Uecker day for me. Too bad, I was looking forward to watching Lincecum pitch after that SI article about his delivery.

Shawn Zarraga with a homer and a double today for the AZL Crew. (Zarraga == !BRRROK)?

Cubs up 3-0 on the Astros in the 6th

Fontenot with his 8th (?!) home run.

Cards and Padres tied 1-1 in the 4th.

Meanwhile, just to make you hate the Cubs even more, Jeff Samardzija is turning in his fourth straight good performance at AAA. He might finally be figuring out how to use his great stuff, which is bad news for us.

Did anybody see that rediculous 5th for the 'Stros?

Bases loaded none-out, couldn’t get a run in, although the ump helped Dempster by ringing up Backe on an awful call

by Scooter82 on Jul 20, 2008 2:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Just popped in on this game…looks like the Astros are swinging at anything and everything to poor results.

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 2:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I just don't get Dempster

I was going to complain about our division rivals always being able to turn relievers into quality starters, but I guess we did get McClung.

Will LaRussa order a hit?

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 2:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Well, at least there was a nice knock down pitch on Fukudome…

Having just watched the highlights

The Cards seem to be struggling to fill the stadium.
It seems to be only about 2/3 full, if that which is not good considering how well the team is doing

by Saltire on Jul 20, 2008 2:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I went to a game at the Old Busch stadium in 100 degree heat, and it was miserable. To make matters worse, the Crew lost 1-0 on a Woody Williams RBI single…

scratch that

my memory was a little faulty…it was a sac fly.

by battlekow on Jul 20, 2008 3:05 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My memory was apparently still faulty

Woody Williams scored on a sac fly by Edgar Renteria. But the game was about as yawn (and sweat) inducing as I remember.

I could see it was sunny but did not realise is was that hot

I can understand why people might have given the game a miss today
It never reaches much above 80 here never mind 100+

Scott Baker had a perfect game going in the 6th

Then Taylor Teagarden (what is that, like the fourth young catcher the Rangers have on their 40-man?) homered-his first Major League hit-and Baker not only lost the perfect game/no-hitter/shutout, but also the lead.

by ol Pete on Jul 20, 2008 2:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I guess it was asking a lot of the Astros

To sweep the Cubs

Win today and keep pace that is the plan an hopefully the Padres can actually hold on to a lead and Crew can role into St Louis in 2nd place

Its all about the Bullpen this season that is the key.

Trenni in her worst outfit to date

says deal for Durham hasn’t been finalized. I could see not talking about trades in the pregame but why take the time to say the trade hasn’t happened?

by ol Pete on Jul 20, 2008 2:57 PM CDT   0 recs

If they're going to do it...

...can’t they get Durham in the game, trade him, and then have him come in for the Crew?

Not many chances for that kind of thing…

I picture your regular set-up as having 2 or 3 monitors with a half dozen pages open all the time.

by ol Pete on Jul 20, 2008 3:17 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Only one monitor, but the half dozen is a rather vast underestimate

Sometimes my eyes kind of glaze over and I forget which tab I’m looking for and I just click on them blindly for 30 seconds before snapping out of it.
