Game Thread #98: Brewers (54-43) at Giants (40-57)

For the first time in the series, the pitching matchup appears to favor the other guys--Manny Parra goes against Tim Lincecum.  Lincecum missed the All-Star Game due to flu-like symptoms, but it sounds like he's ok.

You've probably noticed, but Parra has been impressive of late.  Lincecum may have a 2.57 season ERA and a 3.33 mark in his last 7 starts, but Parra's at 2.68 in those same last 7.  It's asking a lot to expect Parra to keep pitching like this, but even his regression-happy Marcel projection puts him under 4.00 for the rest of the season.

Game time is 3:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Extra Innings

today’s game is not on the Extra Innings schedule so it will be a Uecker day for me. Too bad, I was looking forward to watching Lincecum pitch after that SI article about his delivery.

Cubs up 3-0 on the Astros in the 6th

Fontenot with his 8th (?!) home run.

Cards and Padres tied 1-1 in the 4th.

Meanwhile, just to make you hate the Cubs even more, Jeff Samardzija is turning in his fourth straight good performance at AAA. He might finally be figuring out how to use his great stuff, which is bad news for us.

Bases loaded none-out, couldn’t get a run in, although the ump helped Dempster by ringing up Backe on an awful call

Having just watched the highlights

The Cards seem to be struggling to fill the stadium.
It seems to be only about 2/3 full, if that which is not good considering how well the team is doing

I went to a game at the Old Busch stadium in 100 degree heat, and it was miserable. To make matters worse, the Crew lost 1-0 on a Woody Williams RBI single…

Scott Baker had a perfect game going in the 6th

Then Taylor Teagarden (what is that, like the fourth young catcher the Rangers have on their 40-man?) homered-his first Major League hit-and Baker not only lost the perfect game/no-hitter/shutout, but also the lead.

Can someone explain what the point of the Durham trade is

Because unless they think he is going to start instead of Weeks then it seems that we have just replaced Joe Dillon on the bench.
Surely we are not going to keep Durham at the end of the year so why have we given up 2 marginal prospects for somebody who might only get a few AB’s a week and get paid millions for doing so.
Obviously if Weeks gets hurt (always a chance going by his history) then we have a better back up plan but you cant make trades just for that sort of eventuality can you?

by Saltire on Jul 20, 2008 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

I can't explain it

6 years of a durable lefty 4th starter seems many orders of magnitude more valuable than a few hundred (maybe) at-bats from Ray Durham.

Despite the Cards’ sweep, they haven’t really looked all that great at home against the team with the worst record in the majors. I am listening to the radio feed on mlb.com and have Baseball Tonight on mute. They showed the HR about 30 seconds before the radio announced it.

by molitorfan on Jul 20, 2008 4:59 PM CDT reply actions

wow, that ball was the same pitch he rung Prince up on…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:04 PM CDT reply actions

I understand that it's a big series...

but why does BoSox-Angels of Anaheim get two nationally televised games in the same weekend? Wouldn’t fans like it more if they got to see some other teams? Is there no other big series going on this weekend?

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

Well, I should check these things out before opening my mouth…but there really aren’t any good series happening this weekend…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Except maybe the battle for the suck division LA-Arizona game…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions

But since its all planned out, they should have had something different on rather than all the Sawx games they showed so far.

by ol Pete on Jul 20, 2008 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions

True

I know you gotta go for ratings, but doesn’t this come at the expense of some other quality teams?

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

And how exactly..

do the Mets get so many games? They didn’t even make the postseason last year (and they won’t this year either)

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

They are in the biggest TV market

And had a team that should have been in the playoffs last year and are one of the hottest in the league right now…

by Kyguy922 on Jul 20, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

But they were still on ESPN all the time when they stunk earlier this year…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Seemed like Parra was getting squeezed on that walk…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:15 PM CDT up reply actions

except pink bats

by Kyguy922 on Jul 20, 2008 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I know pink bats are against the rules because they blab forever on Mother’s Day how there is a special suspension of the rule on that day

I think so...

at least 2 days in a row.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jul 20, 2008 5:35 PM CDT reply actions

not a good pitch

but that catch would’ve ended the inning giving Manny 8 complete

Give Rowand a double on that? Sucks for Parra

Torres coming in for the save to face the bottom of the order

Questionable.

give him a day off...

...i’d like to have him fresh for the next series.

Maybe Torres paid off hart to screw the pooch.

by PagsBrewCrew on Jul 20, 2008 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

It would better to get a couple of runs

So that Yost can keep Villanueva in instead

by Saltire on Jul 20, 2008 5:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Torres

Hasn’t really worked much though…

by ZTK Always on Vacation on Jul 20, 2008 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions

He worked yesterday

Who’s to say that he’s not going to be needed the next three games or something? It’s just pointless.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Jul 20, 2008 5:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He should keep Villy in anyway

If Villy can’t get three outs before giving up three runs to the Giants, he should be DFA’d.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

Retracted.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Jul 20, 2008 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

When it's warranted, IMO, sure I do.

I have nothing against Yost, and my spouting out of Yosted, is out of frusteration ATM. But I would never advocate not using your closer in a 3 run game. That’s just silly.

by Flag Up on Jul 20, 2008 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Explain how it's not silly

A runner gets on and you dam well know Torres will be throwing anyways.

by Flag Up on Jul 20, 2008 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

One silly thing does not justify another silly thing

Any reliever on our team should be able to get three outs on the Giants before giving up three runs.

BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"

by battlekow on Jul 20, 2008 6:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Not using your pretty well rested closer in a save situation IS silly.

Silly even to argue that. Only thing I can think of is your fantasy team is facing Torres.

by Flag Up on Jul 20, 2008 6:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually, Torres is on my fantasy team

And I’m curious how you’re so prescient that you know Torres won’t be needed in three straight games in St. Louis or something. Good to know you’ve bought in completely to the bizarre save-driven usage that’s so prevalent in baseball.

Cool pitcher-hitting tidbit

Courtesy of BP:

Brewers left-hander CC Sabathia is the first pitcher to hit a home run in both leagues in the same season since Earl Wilson connected in 1970 for the Tigers off the Indians’ Steve Dunning, and for the Padres off the Braves’ Phil Niekro.

hey Brian, Bill

what about the roster spot?

by ol Pete on Jul 20, 2008 6:10 PM CDT reply actions

Rock was on his game today

Wilson comes into the game.

Rock: He’s not a guy that will blow you away, he gets by on control.

(Radar gun shows 97, 96, 99, etc)

Rock: I guess the scouting report I read was wrong.

Later….

Rock: Brian Wilson is the kind of pitcher you build your team around. You don’t trade a guy like that.

Wilson ERA+: 93
Wilson WHIP: 1.527

And neck size to baby eating ratio.
