Game Thread #99: Brewers (55-43) at Cardinals (57-43)
Wow, this is a big series. It's hard to imagine that a week and a half of games could be any more meaningful while we're still in July. Tonight kicks off a four-game set with the Cardinals, and after we spend the weekend hosting the Astros, the Cubs come to Milwaukee for four more.
The Crew enters the series even with the Cards in the loss column, though one back in the standings--and thus, one game out of the Wild Card. St. Louis will face both Sheets and Sabathia (in the last two games of the series), and the Cubs will get to start their four-game set against our pair of aces. Looking at the big picture, I'd be happy to win 4 out of these 8 Chicago and St Louis games--staying even in the standings is good enough for me, and I trust we can pick up the difference against our relatively easy schedule outside of those two opponents.
Of course, I wouldn't mind 7 out of 8. Or 9 out of 8, which I think we might achieve with the addition of Ray Durham's veteran leadership. Speaking of Durham, he is available tonight.
As you just might be aware, tonight's starter, Seth McClung, has been better away from Miller Park. His opponent is Joel Pineiro, who has thrown one quality start per season against the Brewers in his Cardinal career.
Game time is 6:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

You are so ignorant
There is no way that the Brewers will catch the Cubs. None!! DO YOU HEAR ME?!! THE CUBS WILL NOT LOSE THE REST OF THE YEAR, YOU CAN JUST ASSUME SWEEPS!!!!!
And, first.
I’m a little confused about why you say the Cubs will miss CC. Won’t he pitch the first game of the series?
you're right
I don’t know what I was thinking. He will pitch the first game of the series.

I agree
that winning half of the Cards/Cubs games would be great. With CC and Sheets pitching 4 of the 8, I am hopeful that more than 4 wins is a good possibility.

Getting 4 out of 8
Against the Cards/Cubs would pretty good as that would set us up to make a move in August when the schedule is very favourable.
In August there is only one team that is currently above .500 on the schedule – the Cards for a 2 game series.
Admittadly the Dodgers or Reds could be above .500 by the time we play them but the rest against the Braves,Astros,Pirates,Nationals and Padres really make-up a powder puff schedule.
The downside is that the games split 10/18 home/away but recently we seem to be playing much better on the road than in previous years
Anybody...

When asked what Durham brings to the team,

It really feels like a major victory every time Pujols doesn't get a hit
My heart and stomach say he’s the most dangerous hitter in the league. Now, if i was a mainstream columnist, at this point I would now write an article about how Pujols is the most dangerous hitter in the league, without bother to consult the statistics to find out whether or not my stomach is brilliant or I just ate some Indian food.

Fanastic quote from Twins GM Bill Smith
“Twins general manager Bill Smith, on Livan Hernandez, who improved to 10-6 with a 5.29 earned-run average with Saturday’s victory over Texas: “I’ll take the (10) wins. Who do you want, a guy who’s 10-15 with a 2.80 ERA or a guy who’s 16-8 with a 7.00 ERA? I’ll take the 16-8.”

Let’s imagine I am part of a 25-man team that makes frozen 4-cheese ravioli dinners. And every time I’m on a shift, I take my syringe and I expertly inject the pasta with goat cheese (my task) and I have like a 99.4% success rate of successful goat cheese injection, and when my raviolis go on to the next man on my team, ready for edam infusion, they are just perfectly formed and looking tasty and delicious. And by the time they reach the end of the assembly line, they are torn to shreds, leaking gouda, and somehow covered in bat feces—so bad are the other men on Team Ravioli. So my boss, Hunt Sperkleman, C.E.O. of Sperkleman Four Cheese Ravioli and Penne Arrabiata, Inc. (NASDAQ Ticker: SFCR: 92.50, +10.68, +13.1% as of Monday, 12:02 PM EST, thanks to rumors of a takeover bid from Sheinhardt Wigs), comes down to the assembly line, and he looks around and he sees all the morons on my team. He sees W.K. Horflitz, whose nose is running directly into the pasta cutter. He sees Janet Przyblr, who’s on the phone, gabbing with her new husband, as chunk after chunk of unmelted brie just goes rolling by on the assembly line. He sees them all, and he says: “Ken! You’re disappointing me!” and I say: “Why, Hunt?” and he says, “Only 8 out of 15 people who eat these raviolis like them!” and I say, “But I did my job!” and he says, “You can go ahead and end this metaphor now—I think people get the idea.”

A Cardinals batter hit it to him in St. Louis, so it’s a hit to boost that guy’s average.

The Cardinals will be forced to have a pitcher bat in the bottom of the 10th

i was thinking..
we should use CC to pinch hit.

Yeah
Crazy how the backup takes over.

What did Bristol have to say about that defensive wizardry?

talking about the Mallards' fanbase again?

25% of our opening day payroll has pitched the last 4 innings
and the only one that has earned his paycheck this year is the one with the bad outing
I remember we were talking about the Mallards recently
This should probably reinforce your opinion of them, be it good or bad.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
they have 250 fans?
it doesn’t surprise me that all those fans would choose to debase themselves…but…

I'm still feeling pretty good. Not as good as 20 minutes ago...
... but I like our chances in extras tonight.

HALL
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
Hello
I could really go for the old Bill Hall to start showing up the rest of the season
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
Hall
No one tell him he’s not supposed to hit righties.

What's the record
for consecutive posts with a players name and exclamation points? We may have just set it.
BA and Rock talking about Salomon having pitched three days in a row
I find myself in the unusual position of sharing their bullpen-usage boat.

That might not be a bad t-shirt
Hall with a pink bad and the text “VERGIE KNEW”.
I was thinking we should sell t-shirts around here. Would anyone buy one?

Looks like I picked the wrong day to cancel cable.
And my computer is so freaking slow, I can barely do gameday. That said “watching” the game by just monitoring this thread is a cool 4th option for following the Crew.

I can't believe he made contact
CC jr?

He's the closer
Gotta close the game out in the 10th, even if he’s got to bat to do it, even if he’s pitching on his third straight day or whatever…

What are the odds Rickie boots two more balls next inning?
The math is on our side!

it has gameday flummoxed
it skipped from kendall to weeks
gameday knows torres shouldn’t bat

That was really close to being a hit
I wonder who the last pitcher to register a blown save, a hit, and a win in the same game was.

About time
the Cardinals mess something up, since they’re so clutch and have all of that grit.
Brewers, Brewers keep turning up the heat.. Milwaukee Brewers..
I think Torres
Blew it on purpose just so they could score some more runs to keep the offensive numbers up…and to get an ab.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."
yeah. sorry. i'll behave myself.

anyone in firefox
you can click on the team names; (“Akron | Huntsville | Cumulative”) - I just haven’t made those obvious links yet.
if you’re in IE, I’m guessing it’ll break.
Also, cheese.
Nice Touch

cool.
since I’ve now confirmed it definitely does not work in IE :).
firefox is much more forgiving of javascript, which is good, because I don’t really know javascript.

IE
sometimes confuses getElementById with getElementsByName
but i thought that generally caused it to work and make mozilla break.

State Farm
Ever notice the commercial with the cubs hitting the HR to win the game and Pat is calling the game, they don’t have Santo yelling/mumbling in the background.
That a boy Weeks
