Game Thread #100: Brewers (56-43) at Cardinals (57-44)
Winning streaks are fun! Well, at least the parts of the winning streaks that don't involve coughing up a one-run lead in the ninth thanks to little-league quality defense. The rest is good, though!
Tonight's matchup is Jeff Suppan vs. Kyle Lohse, otherwise known as "Object lesson #672 on why Dave Duncan saves the Cardinals millions." St. Louis passed on signing Suppan, and in his place, they brought in guys like Lohse. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop, but Lohse is currently sporting a 3.35 ERA, including 2.35 in his last seven starts. That span even includes the Tigers, Red Sox, and Phillies.
Game time is 7:15 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

pitch f/x
hey, dixie, i just used your pitch f/x web tool, and your ‘07, and ‘08 player cards to see that kyle lohse’s slider is much improved over last year. it’s an excellent out pitch versus right handed hitters. awesome resource, thanks again.
hey, brewers, i just used dixie’s pitch f/x stuff to scout kyle lohse. nasty slider, it’s coming low and away with two strikes, don’t be afraid to take it, cause nobody is hitting it hard. best to get the 91 mph fastball before kyle gets you to two strikes. lefties, watch out for the changeup, you’ll get that instead of the slider.
Bring Back The Old Logo!
Thanks, that is what it is there for
I wonder if the Brewers might be using the tool for advanced scouting. Nah…
I just got back from watch Tim Beckham hack mightily at some change up all night. He also had a very lazy play in the field. I am starting to wonder abot him.
by dixieflatline on Jul 22, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Not that Beckham is supposed to be as good as him, but that sounds like what people said about Justin Upton in his first season
Of course, even if Upton was a good comp for Beckham, that’s a classic logic error, and I hate when people do that in arguments. “Well, Tom Glavine was terrible when he first came up, much worse than Brian Bannister was, so I don’t see why Bannister can’t become a HOFer.” Okay, that’s a slight exaggeration, but only a slight one.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Tom Glavine is my second-favorite bad comp
Jamie Moyer is #1.
Also, cheese.
by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 22, 2008 8:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Speaking of Glavine
The starter for the P-Rays today was Matthew Moore big lefty who was consistently throwing 91-93 but litterally every off speed pitch was up in the zone. He had absolutely no location with either his slider or change up. He was getting hit all over and the four P-Ray errors in four innings weren’t helping much either.
by dixieflatline on Jul 22, 2008 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Haha, Bannister isn't even left-handed
Worse comp than I even intended.
BCB's "very own marginally deserving all-star!"
Yeah I hear you
The TB rookie team is really a mess. Throwing to wrong bases. Stupid baserunning errors. The who team is super toolsy with almost no skills. The fact that Beckham has started to not get in front of grounders and swinging at every pitch he saw today (all 4 in a rain shortened game) can’t be a good sign.

I kind of just assumed they drafted him just to keep him with Tim for awhile, though I guess a 17th round pick is a little high to spend on a nepotista (nepotisto?)

“A’s struggles not related to trade talks”
Is it related to the actual trades because I think they clearly took a step back, at least this year, with the trades.

Still 1-0 Snakes bottom of the 3rd
It has been at least 12 innings since the Cubs have scored. Their offense has cooled off about as much as it was on fire in the first part of the year.
