Wellemeyer
Wellemeyer got a lot of press over his hot start and the fact that expectations were so low for him, but his ERA is now up to 4.22 and his ERA over the last month is nearly 6.00.
He is fine as a rotation filler I suppose, but he hasn’t been pitching well.

there's a decent chance he overspends for Sheets or Sabathia in the offseason
no offense, but Sheets is more likely (it seems to me) b/c I think Sabathia is probably closer to being the elite pitcher.
if that does happen, we’ll be slightly improved over this year. might tread water for a couple years and see if Bobby Heck can rebuild the farm.

And I would be surprised if we don’t acquire some top-rotation guy, though maybe not via free agency.
But Sheets … he’s going to get a big deal somewhere, and I think it’s too much risk for too much money for a mid-market team. The Yankees can screw up a Pavano-like deal and survive…if we give Ben $90 / 5yrs or something and he’s done…that’s really bad news for the franchise.

couple of questions for you about your observations of two players you didn’t cover in your stars stories:
Did you get to see Omar Aguilar pitch, and what do you think of him? He’s struggled at Huntsville but his velocity is supposedly fantastic.
and also.. do you think that Mike Bell is anything short of a potential backup? He's kinda a "sleeper". I'd be interested to know what he's like to watch, because I don't know a lot about him and only have the numbers.

it's interesting how the NL West parks mess with each other's park factors
if Petco weren’t so extreme, Coors and Chase would statistically be more hitter-friendly than they are.
And vice versa.

well, it's not *wrong*
because park effects are meant to adjust a specific year, or small number of years.
but if you look at coors in 2000 and coors in 2008 and think that just because the 2008 PF is lower, coors is less hitter friendly…you’re missing the petco effect.

the guy is one of our many middling AAAA pitchers
they put up decent numbers at Round Rock (AAA), but can’t pitch in the majors with any success.
so he wasn’t really part of our master plan (although I Paul DePodesta’s blog said he was in our top 10 Baseball America prospect list)
that being said, considering the GM’s involved, it’s certainly probable that Ed Wade got fleeced. Going to petco for 1/2 the games should help.

pretty much everyone here is scratching their heads too
I think the explanation is that Drayton’s primary motive is butts in the seats and he is apparently of the opinion that anything that smacks of rebuilding will damage that. He’s also an incredible optimist (about everything, not just the team). combine that w/ the 2nd half runs the Astros have made the past several years, he thinks it’s important to pretend like we’re not as bad as we are.
at least the Wolf move doesn’t cost us a whole lot and there’s an outside chance we pick up a sandwich pick if he makes the Type B list.

According to a WGN series tonight, 60% of “fans” believe the Cubs have the best rotation in the NL….oh wait, that was on WGN….
But Sean Marshall looked really good tonight, only giving up 2 runs in .2 innings pitched, much better than our bullpen!

That crowd in Arizona is crazy. First cheering because they think it’s going out, then cheering for the catch.

I bet that’s a hit since a Cardinal would’ve been batting.

Kevin Hart
Has given up at least one run in his last six MLB appearances going back to April (two month-long stints in the minors). He’s given up multiple runs in four of those outings.

Remember how we were talking about the Mets' black hole of awful in LF?
Will Carroll on Adam Dunn:
I’m still stunned no one’s talking about Adam Dunn. I asked one FOT about how he’d fit on the Mets or Dbacks and his response was "I guess he’d help.”

Following this game they’ll be 20-21 since the end of a nine-game winning streak on June 3 (yay cherry-picking).

Besides the tantrums about Hall, there are people who don’t like the team untucking their shirts after the game. Another guy talks about how the Brewers haven’t been a “classy” organization the past couple years.
