Minor League Splits Update
I've spent the last two or three days doing work on one of my other sites, Minor League Splits.
Here are some of the new features:
- For players that have switched teams, or have both batted and pitched this year, you can toggle between different teams on the same page. Plus, you can see the player's cumulative season stats as well. For instance, here's Lorenzo Cain, who has played at three levels in 2008.
- I changed the presentation of batted ball data so that batted balls are now given as percents. At a glance, you can see each player's GB%, LD%, FB%, and IF/F (popups per fly ball), plus HR/F (home runs per fly ball) for pitchers. All of that for every split.
- FIP is now included for pitchers.
- I added splits for ground balls, line drives, fly balls, and bunts, so you can see how each player does when he makes each type of contact.
- UPDATE Also just added splits for last 7 days, last 14 days, and last 28 days. Fun fact: Caleb Gindl is hitting 556/625/778 with 43% line drives (that's off the charts, by the way) in the last week.
I've got a lot more cool stuff on the way, so stay tuned.

This should be extremely useful thanks Jeff
The FIP for pitchers especially. I know I use the BABIP for hitters and having FIP should be excellent considering some of these teams are pretty terrible defensively.

One thing though
Can you post ERA even though it obviously isn’t as good of a metric? It is nice to see who might be flying under the radar by having an inflated ERA. Ok actually two, How do you go about calculating the FIP on fly balls and such?

Actually, no on ERA
I don’t have that in the play-by-play.
I use the same formula for FIP no matter what—but it’s kind of nonsensical for the batted ball splits, since there are no K’s, no BB/HPs, and on grounders, no HRs. I may actually just leave out FIP and the batted ball s on the batted ball splits. (You mean his GB on grounders is 100%? Really!)
Also, cheese.

Ok cool
It isn’t like I can’t get that number some place else so really no problem. Yeah I hear you on the splits for the GBs and such.

GB/LD/FB data is awesome
can you even get that data for minor leaguers anywhere else? That’s another way to find out if someone’s playing above their head or not. And, it can probably help adjust for parks- you can hit a line drive in Brevard County just as easily as you can hit one at Coors Field.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.

I don't think it's available anywhere else.
MILB.com has GO/AO for pitchers, but that’s it.
And yep, it’s important for the reason you note. I’m going to add ways to neutralize for park, and MLE-ize the whole table, and I’m also thinking of coming up with a way of neutralizing for luck—generating an expected BABIP from GB%, LD%, FB%, and IF/F, and adjusting everything accordingly.
Also, cheese.

probably just an IE6 thing
but there seems to be some background colour spillage going on when a player has only played for one team (and thus there are no links in the team navbar). Compare our Brad Nelson to the other one.

indeed, thanks
I think it is just an IE6 thing, but I may be able to fix it anyway.
Also, cheese.

I think I fixed it.
IE7 and Firefox are both more forgiving, so the error didn’t show up for me.
Also, cheese.

thanks!
Two other things…I didn’t realize it before, but judging from the FIP values you have hit batsmen data available. I take it that that’s a conscious decision not to display it?
And also on FIP…I’m not really up on how FIP is supposed to work on a “philosophical” level, so this is more of a question: Using 3.20 as the adjustment term across the board makes them more comparable, I suppose, but it doesn’t really include the league context in that case, right? I’ve noticed that the difference between league ERA and league unadjusted FIP can differ pretty significantly; e.g. for the Pioneer League the adjustment term would need to be something like 4.32 right now to bring both in line with one another.

Yes, I have HP data
I’m not entirely sure what will end up sticking in the stats display, but I started by erring on the side of cutting things out, to see how much room I’d have to work with.
And yeah, FIP should have a league specific-factor. I just haven’t calculated those yet or-more accurately-figured out a way to have my program calculate those for each league every day.
Also, cheese.
