Game Thread #102: Brewers (58-43) at Cardinals (57-46)

So...at what point do we get to assume the sweep?  Ben Sheets hasn't gotten a win since the 4th of July--remember, if you're rooting against the Brewers, you're rooting against America.  That doesn't mean he's pitched poorly.  His last outing was cut short, but the Crew pulled out the win, and the one before that was a standard-issue quality start.

On the other side is Todd Wellemeyer.  He hasn't been very good lately, but the last (and only) time the Brewers faced him, he went six innings, giving up only two unearned runs.

Game time is 7:15 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Weeks on the bench today

And Durham leading off… let’s see if Ray can get it done!

I know Weeks is hot, but Ned must have been getting antsy to use his brand new toy.

The following doesn't really fit here, but then again it doesn't really fit anywhere else either.

My wife is a social baseball fan. She likes to go to games and to watch them when we have people over. But she knows nothing about the sport. Think taking a four-year-old to the game. She’s looking for the ice cream guy and people watching. Somebody hits a double and she cheers and then asks what happened.

Anyhoo, I couldn’t have been more proud of her the other night when I told her Bill Hall hit the game winning home run. She said “That’s great!” before adding, “Hall? Did the Cardinals have a lefty pitching?”

Obviously, this stuff is pretty basic to all of us here, but it was pretty exciting to me.

If she starts talking about OPS, however, I’m going to get suspicious.

So Al from VEB wanted a wear pattern for Wellemeyer

I sent it to him but he is too busy on vacation to post it apparently. Anyway, looks like Wellemeyer has been pretty inconstant in game with his slider in his last four starts. Some nice sharp ones but some crappy ones too. Something to watch for maybe.

We were talking about Risk a few game threads ago

That would definitely add an interesting wrinkle. We’d have to keep the roof closed year-round to thwart Yankee paratroopers.

I can’t imagine Ned Yost’s Risk strategery. Reminds me of the Bugs Bunny/Napoleon cartoon.

Are We Better Off WIth Kendall or What?

The Nationals designated Estrada for assignment on Thursday and promptly released him, the Washington Times reports.

He’ll likely enjoy the rest of the season shuttling between his recliner at home and the local Golden Corral, while resting up his surgically-repaired elbow before making a push for a job elsewhere next spring. Injuries limited him to just 12 games with Washington this season, but Estrada pocketed a cool $1.25 million for his troubles.
