Game Thread #103: Astros (46-55) at Brewers (59-43)

The Marlins have done their part--a Jeremy Hermida home run and a scoreless ninth from Kevin Gregg put away the Cubs and moved the Brewers within a half-game of the division lead.

So, if the Crew wins tonight, we'll have a share of the division lead, and unless Tampa Bay wins first, we'll be the 4th team in the majors (second in the league, of course) to 60 wins.

But, first things first.  The Astros are getting off relatively easy--since Sheets and Sabathia are lined up to face both the Cardinals (that worked well, huh?) and the Cubs, Houston gets Parra, Suppan, and the short half of McBush.  Tonight it's Parra, and the Astros counter with Wandy Rodriguez.  Wandy has had a nice season (3.31 ERA is 80+ innings) despite a few rough outings lately.

Let's hope Miller Park is more favorable to the Astros/Parra matchup than the juice box is--we're dealing with small samples, but Berkman, Lee, Tejada, and Wigginton all have 940+ OPSs against Manny.

Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Who's turn to win the game tonight?

Obviously a team effort, but does anyone want to put a name out there?

I don’t think it’s a HR tonight, but a RBI double by Prince! Last night I called the Braun HR, if I am right tonight I am buying a lottery ticket.

The lineup

2B Rickie Weeks
SS JJ Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Corey Hart
3B Bill Hall
CF Mike Cameron
C Jason Kendall
P Manny Parra

A little surprised to Hart there after last night

Also does anyone think we will see Rivera in this series? Otherwise it could mean only 2 games off this month for Kendall
I am assuming we will need maximum grit behind the plate for the the Cubs series

by Saltire on Jul 25, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if he started the day game on Sunday

Not only has he caught Suppan a couple times this year, but neither he nor Kendall has ever faced Randy Wolf, so it’s not like there’s a matchup reason to keep Kendall in there.

I am thinking Weeks, Braun, Kendall will have off days on Sunday

Just got to have that Sunday lineup in there… Braun didn’t get much rest during the all-star break… and Kendall needs to be fresh to face his old teammates

except Durham 0/12 vs Wolf

So probably Weeks

I like how that's the "No. 1 lineup (arguably)" for the Brewers

According to Anthony Witrado at least. I wonder if that’s an ongoing thing for him or if he just felt like saying it without any explanation.

There's already a FanShot with it, too, for whatever reason

It’s exciting and all to have a shot to end up tied for first, but I don’t see the point of having it in three different places. Maybe we should find a picture of a marlin winning…well, whatever it is marlins win.

yeah, 2 out of 3 would be great.

Honestly, I can’t get that worked up about leaderboard watching right now. Cliche alert: there’s a whole lot of baseball left to be played.

If the Brewers play .600 ball the rest of the way (probably not even—550 would be leading the WC right now), we’ll be in the playoffs. Doesn’t matter what anybody else does. If the Cubs want to swoon now, great. If they want to get rolling again now and then swoon in August, or September, that’s fine too.

my predictions for tomorrow

Bush, not surprisingly, does not work well at all on 15 days rest and needs to be removed in the 2nd inning.

Tomorrow will be a lovely day; the roof will be open and it will be a delightful 70 degrees, with partly cloudy skies—the sort of day that is just designed to make Seth McClung perform at his best.

Ned will put in Carlos Villanueva; McClung will not pitch until the road trip.

Hate to break out the term "classy" again...

But classy move by FSN Wisconsin to do Brewers Live from Wisconsin Dells. I heard a rather depressing report on NPR this morning with a waitress at a restaurant in Lake Delton who sounded about ready to cry when it was mentioned there were only two patrons in the restaurant at noon. Hopefully the publicity gets that girl some more tips.

It’s hard to argue that the Dells isn’t devestated by what happened earlier this year. They’re handing out half price tickets to Noah’s Ark just to get people to stay at the hotels. Bad situation, and it’s good to see the Brewers trying to do some in-state PR for the area.
