Game Thread #105: Astros (47-56) at Brewers (60-44)
Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers, Jul 27, 2008 1:05 PM CDT
This afternoon we're going for a series win, some momentum to take into the Cubs series, and a guaranteed second day in first place. No pressure, guys...
The matchup is Randy Wolf and Jeff Suppan, two guys who don't exactly dominate. Their season ERAs are similar (4.74 and 4.65) and their ERAs over their last seven starts are also in the same ballpark (6.94 and 6.17). Those comparisons probably give Wolf too much credit, though--he managed to amass that 6.94 ERA despite four of the seven starts coming in Petco.
On the flip side, here are some matchups against Suppan that might scare you a bit:
- Berkman: 1.453 OPS in 36 PAs
- Blum: 1.259 OPS in 22 PAs
- Loretta (!?) 1.278 in 19 PAs
Maybe Cecil Cooper is too cool for that stuff and will leave Blum and Loretta on the bench. And hey, maybe Lance needs a day off, too.
Game time is 1:05 CT (fifteen minutes before the game starts at Wrigley), and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

Although I’ll never understand Nedly’s insistence on resting more than one starter on the same day, it’s probably not a bad idea with a big Cubs series coming up.

Interesting
(or not)
The last name of each of the first 6 players in our lineup is an actual word, if you take liberties with the word “brawn.”
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
and if you're going to rest more than one at a time
Rivera’s a good one to put in there—we don’t lose offense with him in the lineup.
Also, cheese.

what series was that guy "assuming the sweep"
because if it was the Marlins series they’re dangerously close to that being a reality
Yep, the Marlins, but Florida can't sweep the Cubs
There was a bit of a backing down further down the thread: “I highly doubt we will split the series with the Marlins, probably more like a sweep.”

Mea Culpa
Please forgive me for any obnoxiousness last night…
I was having glasses of Irrational Exuberance
Again is good
I often complain about Sports coverage in the Fox Cities
here’s an example of why. Today in the Post-Crescent, two writers took point/counterpoint stances on who will win the central. So here’s a classic line from Dan Kohn:
The addition of CC Sabathia alone will give the Brewers a boost of at least 10 wins they would not have had in the second half of the season had they not gone out and gotten him.
WHAT? So Sabathia will go 16-0, whereas Dave Bush would have probably gone 6-10? Maybe he’s giving credit to the lessened strain on the bullpen. That has to be worth 5 wins!
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
And I’m sure it was backed up with quality data such as “you can just see the team responding” etc.
Again is good
Given the recent LOB struggles, this is amusing

Speaking of McClung,
