Game Thread #105: Astros (47-56) at Brewers (60-44)

Houston Astros @ Milwaukee Brewers

This afternoon we're going for a series win, some momentum to take into the Cubs series, and a guaranteed second day in first place.  No pressure, guys...

The matchup is Randy Wolf and Jeff Suppan, two guys who don't exactly dominate.  Their season ERAs are similar (4.74 and 4.65) and their ERAs over their last seven starts are also in the same ballpark (6.94 and 6.17).  Those comparisons probably give Wolf too much credit, though--he managed to amass that 6.94 ERA despite four of the seven starts coming in Petco.

On the flip side, here are some matchups against Suppan that might scare you a bit:

  • Berkman: 1.453 OPS in 36 PAs
  • Blum: 1.259 OPS in 22 PAs
  • Loretta (!?) 1.278 in 19 PAs

Maybe Cecil Cooper is too cool for that stuff and will leave Blum and Loretta on the bench.  And hey, maybe Lance needs a day off, too.

Game time is 1:05 CT (fifteen minutes before the game starts at Wrigley), and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Lineups

2B Rickie Weeks
SS J.J. Hardy
LF Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
RF Corey Hart
3B Bill Hall
CF Gabe Kapler
C Mike Rivera
RHP Jeff Suppan

Although I’ll never understand Nedly’s insistence on resting more than one starter on the same day, it’s probably not a bad idea with a big Cubs series coming up.

Interesting

(or not)

The last name of each of the first 6 players in our lineup is an actual word, if you take liberties with the word “brawn.”

and if you're going to rest more than one at a time

Rivera’s a good one to put in there—we don’t lose offense with him in the lineup.

Also, cheese.

Ahh but

the rest of the team will have to pick up the slack in grit.

what series was that guy "assuming the sweep"

because if it was the Marlins series they’re dangerously close to that being a reality

by warwick5s on Jul 27, 2008 1:02 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No sweep in Chicago

The Marlins lost the first game of the Cub series on Thursday.

by statsllc on Jul 27, 2008 1:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yep, the Marlins, but Florida can't sweep the Cubs

link to the whole exchange

There was a bit of a backing down further down the thread: “I highly doubt we will split the series with the Marlins, probably more like a sweep.”

One of Soup's few redeeming qualities

He actually likes to wear the actual uniform instead of the stupid BP jerseys.

I often complain about Sports coverage in the Fox Cities

here’s an example of why. Today in the Post-Crescent, two writers took point/counterpoint stances on who will win the central. So here’s a classic line from Dan Kohn:

The addition of CC Sabathia alone will give the Brewers a boost of at least 10 wins they would not have had in the second half of the season had they not gone out and gotten him.

WHAT? So Sabathia will go 16-0, whereas Dave Bush would have probably gone 6-10? Maybe he’s giving credit to the lessened strain on the bullpen. That has to be worth 5 wins!

And neck size to baby eating ratio.

Dude, I don’t even know how to respond to such nonsense.

by Lake County on Jul 27, 2008 1:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And I’m sure it was backed up with quality data such as “you can just see the team responding” etc.

Given the recent LOB struggles, this is amusing

10 must be the nice round number sportswriters use for crazy predictions

Like saying the Cubs winning the NL Central by less than 10 games would be obscene when they were up 2 in May,

if soup gets into trouble today… is mcclung available to pitch?

go get em' seth!

by Jamie in LA on Jul 27, 2008 1:40 PM CDT   0 recs

I would think so

with Bush starting against the Cubs.

by oconnobe on Jul 27, 2008 1:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of McClung,

my brother went to the game on Friday night. After the game, my brother and his friend saw McClung at a bar in downtown Milwaukee. My brother said hi and wished him good luck the rest of the season. Said he seemed like a really nice guy (as Jamie already knows!).

by oconnobe on Jul 27, 2008 1:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I wonder if Rivera will get to 100 PA on the season. After today he’ll be on pace for ~85.

Or did BA just mention the Astros leadoff hitter was the first guy Suppan faced today?

I don’t know. I was in the loo and the kitchen and I come back and Ausmus has a hit.

Interesting factoid

“The Brewers beat the Astros Saturday night in a game that they trailed, 4-2, after six innings. Milwaukee is now 11-29 (.275) in games in which they trail after six innings this season, the best such record in the major leagues.”

I wouldn't have guessed that

Sort of the converse of the Cards record that everyone talks about.

I wonder how odd the Orioles Sunday record is.
