I’ve never heard of Huntsville pitcher Dave Johnson, but he threw four, 1 hit innings tonight. Caleb Gindl had a triple and 2 hits and Eric Fryer had 2 hits it well for WV. 2 1/3, 1 hit, 2 K, 1 BB for Frederickson- encouraging line from him in relief tonight. Rob Wooten got the save, we could probably see him in the majors next year if he moves quickly. 3 innings, 1 hit, 1 run for Cody Adams at Helena, nice line for him.

Notes from a Cubs fan (and Badger alum):
—Sheets looked great at first, especially with that big 12-6 curve. Cubs just got to him after awhile.
—Was that Braun’s first error either in the outfield or this season? I thought I heard that on the radio tonight. Good for him that he’s found a position he’s more comfortable playing.
—Great catch by Cameron.
—Tomorrow’s match up looks excellent: Dempster @ Parra. I don’t know too much about Parra, but I know he’s highly touted by my Brewer fans and the organization as a whole.
Good game everyone, I know it’s not what you wanted, but I try to keep the Brewers/Cubs rivalry a bit more friendly and professional than…say that Yanks/Sox?

That is overplayed I think. Taking a bad break on a ball and not getting close to it can kill you faster than just dropping it.

Hey man, I read BCB regularly because I enjoy the comments and the posters...
...I do not usually post BECAUSE I don’t want to see it become a Cubs/Brewers thing. I lived in Wisconsin, graduated from UW, went to many-a games at County and Miller, and generally enjoy the rivalry and both fan bases. I came over tonight and have said not one word even slightly offensive. It’s one thing to say I’m being rude or a troll if I am, but I am not in any way, shape, or form. And now you’re calling me names.

The new SBN is meant to link the various blogs, not isolate them. Thoughts...
I think the turning point in this series was letting CC throw 3 complete games in a row before the series. When he fell apart the Cubs got hot and that carried over into todays game. I think the Brewer’s management got a little to excited with their new toy and played too much with it and wore it out for the game they really needed him.
Now the Brewers have used both of their aces and the Cubs got two wins.
Also on a side note… don’t let the few Cubs fans who are @$$holes and post stupid things make you thing that they are all that way. I won’t do the same to the Brewers fans that do that same. The vast majority of the fans on both sides are knowledgable and respectable

Thing is
Yeah, Sabathia threw three complete games before today, but he wasn’t throwing a ton of pitches. 122 in the first one is a lot, but 110 and 106 in the next two, respectively, is pretty much a normal outing. Carlos Zambrano had pretty much the same workload in his three starts before tonight but didn’t have the complete games to show for it.

Are the Brewers going to go after Sabathia or Sheets after this season? I know CC wants Johan-like money, and the way he’s been pitching lately, he could probably get it. What’s the scoop on Sheets?

i for one hope that you guys keep Sheets and Sabathia, why not heat up a rivalry over the years
if things turn out like last nights game a bunch more times…(not the win) but the atmosphere the two teams brought, i’d be all for the resigning of both guys for several years to keep a competitive race going each year. Cameron is ~$5 million.
Mota and Turnbow are both $3.2M I believe.
Sheets and Sabathia are $20M combined.
Capuano is another $3.75M that will be off the books since he’ll be non-tendered.
So that’s $45 million or so there that will be freed up after the season to apply to arby guys and Sabathia or Sheets or other free agents.

to engage any Cubs fans who are interested in discussion...
As I really don’t want to go over to the other side of the BCB coin to discuss this right now, but will once the Brewers series is over….
What’s the deal with Samardzija and the closer situation? From what I’ve seen of the guy, he’s got some stuff, but I didn’t have any idea until today that this is only his second year of pro ball. At least he’s being kept as the closer for now—the last time I recall Piniella having control of a 23-year-old fireballing starter with potential, the poor kid promptly blew out his elbow (that would be, um, that redhaired guy looking disgruntled in our ‘pen.)
by morineko on Jul 29, 2008 11:42 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
he's hopefully just getting a taste of the majors now being in the pen..
but long-term he’s figured in to be a starter when all is said and done
by maddux1-27-07 on Jul 29, 2008 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wonder how long Wood’s going to be on the DL (it’s Wood, youneverknow) but is there any point in sending Samardzija down to the minors for a couple of weeks? (Especially if Iowa is in any sort of playoff situation, which I believe they are.) You really don’t want to stretch out a starter in the majors, especially in a pennant race, if you don’t have to, but I wouldn’t think they’d need this one so soon.
by morineko on Jul 29, 2008 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
it all depends on Wood i'd think.
if he comes back then i dont see or hope that Shark wouldnt be used for Long relief, he’s an arm they’d like if something happens to Marquis as a 5th starter, around our BCB it only feels like a matter of time before Marquis loses his rotation spot. Lou doesnt seem to be a huge fan of his, never has.

Sarah Wood...Kerry's wife...
...was on WGN radio today. They talked about Kerry’s blister for a bit, and she and Ron Santo both agreed it has been strange in healing, simply because it has taken much, much longer than expected.
Kerry won’t be available for this series, and possibly the weekend home series against the Pirates, but should be back after that. I believe Wood threw today.
And honestly, Lou has overworked Marmol to the point that he’s gonna have get A LOT of rest later in the season. And hopefully we can swap these two guys – put Wood in to work 3 or 5 outs, and get Marmol a bit of rest. That’s my analysis.

Marmol closer, Samardzija Alternate Ninth Inning Guy(tm)?
You know, even as a Brewers fan, I really don’t want to see the words “Marmol” and “closer” near each other.
However, that’s a sight better than “severely inexperienced rookie” and “closer.”

Well, this is what I can tell you in my limited knowledge...
...he’s been moving up the A ball ladder so quickly…but I can’t really tell you why. His ERA is jumpy – low 3’s to high 4’s, and his WHIP is bad and his walks have been way too high. His delivery is a bit deceptive and looks too strained for me, but he can bring the heat. I guess the best rudimentary comparison I can make is, ironically, a Kyle Farmsworth with a brain. He’s been hitting high 90s on the gun, and has a bit of a control issue still, but seems to be workable. I’m really not sure what the hell Lou’s intentions are with the kid, and what position he will have on this team or a team in the future. Needless to say, the Chicago Bears best WR is playing baseball for the Cubs.

Samardzija isn't like Kyle Farnsworth
Farnsworth throws (threw?) really hard, but really straight; Samardzija gets amazing movement considering he throws 97. It’s really remarkable.

Sure, I agree with that...
...Jeff’s delivery scares me a bit, it just looks so damn awkward. I don’t know how else to describe it.

yea, his movement is stunning...
think his size just gives me the Farnsworth resemblence. Shark should settle down with his BB’s…he’s coming in so energized, overthrowing some pitches to make an impression

That would explain the rapid call-up
They always say you can’t teach velocity, but if they’re not having to teach movement either…ugh, this is scary to have this in our division and not playing for the Brewers.

Yeah, I liked him better when he was a big joke

It's the late movement that's impressive.
and for whatever reason, the better the competition, the better he pitches. He was kind of sucky in A and AA but still kept getting promoted.

stop me if you've heard this one before
Control issue, bad WHIP, high 90s…Farnsworth? It could be, but it’s probably Seth McClung v2.0.
But he does have a brain, because he chose the sport with the guaranteed contracts and (maybe) a lower risk of injury.

And he's been relatively successful in his limited experience in the bigs so far...
...I think 2 ER in 6 or 7 IP?

I'm just glad Lou gets to break in the Shark and not Dusty!!! then we'd definitely know his career will end in 2 years

Things are slowing down...sorry to intrude or make my first appearance
in tonights game, wasn’t and dont want to be trolling…took me 2 or 3 months of reading within my own BCB before i felt comfortable posting. trust me i have plenty of time on my hands, been here and the other BCB non-stop reading while i’ve been out with an Achilles surgery thats been 4+ months in rehab.
good night all…and lets have the civility again tomorrow night for a great game hopefully. Lets keep this race close to the end, but for now..GO CUBS…sorry

Shucks, I missed all the trolls
Funny how Cubs fans only feel like “civilly discussing baseball” after they’ve managed to win a game. Something tells me it would be a little more quiet over here if they had lost.

Good story by Gene @ ESPN about...
...how the teams and us fans have morphed this rivalry into something more, something a bit more special.
Here.

Hello to all.
Quick question, preceded by a quick intro.
Cubs fan living in Milwaukee. I was at the game on Tuesday night. I went with my fiancee and her family. I pay attention to sports a LOT more than her family, but her dad is competitive and throws out every fact that he hears. So, during the game, Braun makes a solid catch, and he goes “It’s great that he doesn’t play 3rd base anymore. He has really developed into one of the best defensive Left Fielder’s in the game. He doesn’t have any errors.”
Now, I desperately wanted to correct him, but we need his money for the wedding. (sigh) But it made me wonder, is this a Major League rule that needs to be changed?
So I ask under civil discussion.
Should a dive that results in anything more than a triple (but only if the fielder makes no contact with the ball before it hits the ground) be counted as a single plus an error on the fielder? My reasoning is… Fukudome’s triple should have been a single, but a mental ERROR by Braun caused it to be a triple. I think it should have been ruled a single by Fukudome with an error by Braun because the ball landed a good 2 feet in front of Braun’s outstretched glove.
Now I am not saying this with bitterness towards you having a better player in your LF that we do. (Braun is better than Soriano, I can admit that.)
I am also not saying this because I don’t think he’s amazing. (I think he’s one of the best players in the majors, and can carry a team on his steroid-free shoulders, which is phenomenal.)
And I am not saying this because Braun is a bad defender. (I think he is at least decent, as his current no errors can attest to.)
I am saying this because I have seen SO many Brewer’s games to realize that his mental errors, which are never ruled REAL errors, have caused the Brewer’s many “triples”. When does it stop? Should there be a rule change for an outfield error?
Please discuss as civil people. I just want to know the beliefs of the fans who see it even more than me.

Yeah, going off errors to judge outfielders is dumb (hey, all these guys can catch!)
It’s not really related but the official scorer in Milwaukee isn’t very good anyway compared to the other ones around the league. The rule about outfield errors won’t change anytime soon. I get what you’re saying about charging errors for allowing runners to reach extra bases, but then you’d have to start charging errors for every bad bounce in the outfield, weird caroms off the wall, or even hustle doubles (single plus base possibly not prevented by ordinary effort on the outfielder).
