Game Thread #85: Brewers (46-38) at D-Backs (42-43)

The starters this afternoon are Manny Parra and Brandon Webb.  Webb is probably the better pitcher, but for what it's worth, Parra has been better over the last seven starts.  (Or six starts, or five starts, doesn't really matter where you draw the line, as long as you're focusing on the last month to six weeks.)

Game time is 2:40 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

If you haven't already, be sure to scroll down and check out battlekow doing...well, he did something, and you should see it.

Go Brewers!

Cubs...

Cubs have to face Lincecum, so hopefully the Giants can make some magic happen. Tim was on the cover of SI this week, so hopefully it’s not a curse like being on the cover of Madden.

Parra better toss well, I’m counting on a good game to keep me entertained while driving up’Nort.

by SgtClueLs on Jul 3, 2008 12:48 PM CDT   0 recs

Plus

The game starts at 5 on the west coast, so the shadows will play a major role. Im expecting a lot of cubbies swinging and missing on little Timmy’s curveball in the dirt.

by brewfan2 on Jul 3, 2008 1:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

lincecum

dominated us last year and i fully expect to watch the cubs lose tonight. Thats why winning last nights game was so important because you dont want to lose 3 of 4 in SF.

by ACB on Jul 3, 2008 2:27 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Braun sitting again

Weeks leading off but otherwise the same lineup as last night.

Webb is probably the better pitcher? That’s an understatement. I hope Parra keeps it up, though.

Hey!

Where is the Battlekow interview of Trenni?

"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

by roguejim on Jul 3, 2008 1:32 PM CDT   0 recs

Haha

Glad you guys enjoyed the Xallic today.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 2:45 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Mmm, less singles

He's extremely quick and good.

How prone is he to grounding into triple plays?

A 3-0 lead on Webb would be fantastickal

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:05 PM CDT   0 recs

Well, that didn't go quite as planned

Oh well, I’ll take 2-0.

He's extremely quick and good.

Almost stayed in the rundown long enough to get Parra to second.

Wow

That play by Hardy makes up for the previous ones.

He's extremely quick and good.

Right on the heels of this article at the Yost Infection.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice reply on that article

I was writing the exact same thing until I saw your reply. Of course, I wouldn’t have known that without it being mentioned here.

by brewfan2 on Jul 3, 2008 3:19 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

There are other factors as well, particularly the play of other infielders. Even the people who cook up all the different ZRs say that it might be accurate over a time period of 3 or so seasons. Then you would average those years, not take them in isolation.

by ol Pete on Jul 3, 2008 3:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

That was weird

Branyan threw a palm-ball over to second.

Dude

is turning into Ernie Banks somehow.

by Braunstalker on Jul 3, 2008 3:21 PM CDT   0 recs

He played

at short for the first part of his career (I assume way worse at it than JJ)

by Braunstalker on Jul 3, 2008 3:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Haha, I know

Everyone thinks of him as a SS, but he played a ton of games at 1B.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

We'll

go with Honus Wagner then.

by Braunstalker on Jul 3, 2008 3:29 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I would trade JJ for Honus Wagner

...provided the Pirates picked up some of JJ’s salary.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Speaking of trading JJ

The Dodgers need a SS, and we need a Clayton Kershaw.

He's extremely quick and good.

No love for Luke Appling?

anyone with over 100 rbi and under 50 hr gets my vote.

by Braunstalker on Jul 3, 2008 3:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

JJ

Currently, he is carrying this team. Almost like last year with the 24-10 start.

by brewfan2 on Jul 3, 2008 3:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Hall

He should use Hardy’s broken bat. Can’t really hurt at this point.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Jul 3, 2008 3:22 PM CDT   0 recs

...and fall on it?

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:23 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

What?

The guy behind Robinade didn’t have an idea why home teams are winning so much this year in baseball? Incredible.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Jul 3, 2008 3:38 PM CDT   0 recs

He just doesn't want to give away the secret

It’s because teams are putting Xanax in their visitors’ Robinade supplies.

He's extremely quick and good.

by ol Pete on Jul 3, 2008 3:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Kendall

hit #1918 in his career. Would be pretty cool if he got hot and made it to 2000 in the second half. (This was hit #70 this year, so it would take a better second half.)

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 3, 2008 3:39 PM CDT   0 recs

He'll have to do it in the playoffs

Do they count playoff hits in their career totals?

by brewfan2 on Jul 3, 2008 3:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

No

I’ve always wondered why not.

He's extremely quick and good.

by battlekow on Jul 3, 2008 3:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Nice pitch

Looked like Barry Zito… 4 years ago.

I for one

am very happy Snyder does not need surgery because of his recent injury.

by Braunstalker on Jul 3, 2008 3:49 PM CDT   0 recs

I think you are posting from the future

I know the mlb.tv feed is behind, but this is getting ridiculous.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 3, 2008 3:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

so it's not just on my end...

it really has been pretty bad of late. Even Gameday is routinely almost two pitches ahead, I shudder to think what the difference to live TV must be.

by Zeyes on Jul 3, 2008 3:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

listening to gameday audio while having this up is bad

it’s like watching a movie with someone who is telling you what’s just about to happen all the time

by warwick5s on Jul 3, 2008 3:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Will someone remind me why

Rickey Weeks is still in the leadoff position? one pitch, one out

“Confused” is an understatement.

I bet his OBP is one of the lowest in the MLB. (The Jay will likely put the lie to this assertion.)
His speed doesn’t help much when he is in the dugout.

Let’s remember he was given an express ticket to the MLB.

by heybatterbatter on Jul 3, 2008 3:54 PM CDT   0 recs

Brewers with OBP lower than Weeks (.327 coming into today)

Hall (.271)
Braun (.313)
Cameron (.298)

The average NL OBP is .329.

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Jul 3, 2008 3:57 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

thanx -

not that it’s a “must know” but I wonder how Weeks stacks up against the rest of the regular leadoff players in the league – maybe grist for a Fanpost….

Mark Grace

really likes calling some Brewers players “big rascals” or “big ole rascals.”

it’s weird every time.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 3, 2008 3:59 PM CDT   0 recs

was an insane doubles hitter, and is an insane person.

Hey TheJay

D-Backs version of Trenni just interviewed a guy who is celebrating his 100th birthday, played baseball at Carroll College. ...quite some time ago.
