Game Thread #85: Brewers (46-38) at D-Backs (42-43)
The starters this afternoon are Manny Parra and Brandon Webb. Webb is probably the better pitcher, but for what it's worth, Parra has been better over the last seven starts. (Or six starts, or five starts, doesn't really matter where you draw the line, as long as you're focusing on the last month to six weeks.)
Game time is 2:40 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
If you haven't already, be sure to scroll down and check out battlekow doing...well, he did something, and you should see it.
Go Brewers!

Cubs...
Cubs have to face Lincecum, so hopefully the Giants can make some magic happen. Tim was on the cover of SI this week, so hopefully it’s not a curse like being on the cover of Madden.
Parra better toss well, I’m counting on a good game to keep me entertained while driving up’Nort.
Plus
The game starts at 5 on the west coast, so the shadows will play a major role. Im expecting a lot of cubbies swinging and missing on little Timmy’s curveball in the dirt.
Braun sitting again
Weeks leading off but otherwise the same lineup as last night.

Hey!
Where is the Battlekow interview of Trenni?
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
Kendall
How prone is he to grounding into triple plays?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Cameron
Almost stayed in the rundown long enough to get Parra to second.

Nice reply on that article
I was writing the exact same thing until I saw your reply. Of course, I wouldn’t have known that without it being mentioned here.
He played
at short for the first part of his career (I assume way worse at it than JJ)
Haha, I know
Everyone thinks of him as a SS, but he played a ton of games at 1B.
He's extremely quick and good.
I would trade JJ for Honus Wagner
...provided the Pirates picked up some of JJ’s salary.
He's extremely quick and good.
Speaking of trading JJ
The Dodgers need a SS, and we need a Clayton Kershaw.
He's extremely quick and good.
i like luke appling...
i think i still appling autographed 48 leaf card.
Also, cheese.

wow
anyone with over 100 rbi and under 50 hr gets my vote.
Hall
He should use Hardy’s broken bat. Can’t really hurt at this point.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
What?
The guy behind Robinade didn’t have an idea why home teams are winning so much this year in baseball? Incredible.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
He just doesn't want to give away the secret
It’s because teams are putting Xanax in their visitors’ Robinade supplies.
He's extremely quick and good.
Kendall
hit #1918 in his career. Would be pretty cool if he got hot and made it to 2000 in the second half. (This was hit #70 this year, so it would take a better second half.)
Also, cheese.
I for one
am very happy Snyder does not need surgery because of his recent injury.
I think you are posting from the future
I know the mlb.tv feed is behind, but this is getting ridiculous.

so it's not just on my end...
it really has been pretty bad of late. Even Gameday is routinely almost two pitches ahead, I shudder to think what the difference to live TV must be.
listening to gameday audio while having this up is bad
it’s like watching a movie with someone who is telling you what’s just about to happen all the time
Will someone remind me why
Rickey Weeks is still in the leadoff position? one pitch, one out
“Confused” is an understatement.
I bet his OBP is one of the lowest in the MLB. (The Jay will likely put the lie to this assertion.)
His speed doesn’t help much when he is in the dugout.
Let’s remember he was given an express ticket to the MLB.
Brewers with OBP lower than Weeks (.327 coming into today)
Hall (.271)
Braun (.313)
Cameron (.298)
The average NL OBP is .329.

thanx -
not that it’s a “must know” but I wonder how Weeks stacks up against the rest of the regular leadoff players in the league – maybe grist for a Fanpost….

Mark Grace
really likes calling some Brewers players “big rascals” or “big ole rascals.”
it’s weird every time.
Also, cheese.
Mark Grace
was an insane doubles hitter, and is an insane person.
Hey TheJay
D-Backs version of Trenni just interviewed a guy who is celebrating his 100th birthday, played baseball at Carroll College. ...quite some time ago.
Also, cheese.
it's been almost 80 years ...
that seems like an optimistic estimate.

“if you’re going to be an offensive player you have to be a complete offensive player”
...maybe that’s why Sidney Ponson gained all that weight.
Also, cheese.
parra's done
on the fastball he’s lost 1+ inch break, and he’s lost 1+ mph on the fastball. he’s tired. hope this is his last inning.
Bring Back The Old Logo!
If parra threw a complete game today....
It would be like 230 pitches.
It would be frustrating to be a D-Backs fan

gotta feel sorry for that centenarian
he’s been watching this team for 90 years!
(um, never mind)

Branyan
Now only 1395 behind Rickey H.

They might be right...
that it grazed the foul pole. As long as FSN employs their current production staff, we will never know.
That was foul
But I’ll take it!
"My thing is that you guys eat meat all day and you can't hit a ball. That's my thing." - P. Fielder
okay, might have hit the foul pole after all...
that part is not terribly clear on the Arizona feed either.
Too bad this wasn't against the Mets
Didn’t their TV crew have a camera right down the left field line into the dugout at Miller Park last year?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Good move, Brandon
Walk Parra to get to Weeks. No sarcasm here.
wow
even if the D-Backs hold on to lose, they’ll still be leading the division, 2 games under .500.
Also, cheese.
Shades of San Diego a couple years ago
Won the division 2 under .500
I was just going to post that

Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Incidentally...
before today, the NL West’s combined winning percentage was less than that of the 6th-place NL Central team.
I thought leadoff hitters were supposed to make the pitcher work?
Weeks – 13 pitches seen in 4ABs (2 Ks)
Parra – 12 pitches seen in 3ABs (1 K)
"He could use a little home cooking"
Says Rock, re: Prince.
Fourth of July is an excellent time for grilling out, eating various processed meats.
Both
Ideally, it would be good to get a good year out of Prince in 08 and then do it, but man. I don’t know…
I am pro-Cameron
I would rather have Gagne in...
When we are down several runs. I don’t want to give them an opening.
I bet Gagne gets the 9th if it's still a big lead
“It’s what he’s accustomed to,” etc.

Nice
got home from work just in time to hear Daron complaining about how many opportunities the D Backs have squandered today.
The Mets are Laughing HARD!!!!
The Wallbangers won because they played the game like kids! Let's do that again!!!
Maybe in two weeks
Branyan and Weeks will be assessed errors and Mota’s ERA will improve again.

The Brewers’ brass had a mysterious meeting today.
Maybe they were discussing where to bury the bodies.
He's extremely quick and good.
Frustrating loss
Infield hits suck.
On the bright side, still a .500 road trip and a nice homestand to put the game behind us.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
wow
a devastating loss. up there with the Coco blown save vs. A-Ram last year

the exact game I was thinking of
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
Perhaps not coincidentally
That involved an infield hit or two as well.
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
i hate
Guillermo Mota. Can’t believe its taken until July 3 for it to be clear that he has no place on this roster.

I'm going to say that's still Torres' job
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Torres has been awesome
I think it’s time to stop looking at saves as a statistic. If its 5-0 in the ninth, bring torres in to start the inning. If its 10-0, bring in Torres. He says he pitches better with more work.
Stop looking at saves as a stat and just win the game.
What happens after August
When Torres has already made 90 appearances?
Obscure baseball records and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.
Cant blame it all on the bullpen
Brewers were 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position

No kidding
Branyan striking out on three pitches with Hart at third and one out is particularly glaring.
He's extremely quick and good.
Yosted!!
Best Yosting of the year…so far.
Why wasn’t Conor Jackson walked to set up a possible double play and limit the damage to one run? Who knows…the Yoster was conjuring in his usual inscrutable manner.
I almost heaved my foot long char dog
after witnessing the Brewers give away yesterday’s game. I like the DBacks because I live in the Valley of the Sun, but love me some Brewers. Every year the Crew is in Phoenix for the regular season, I’m down for a game or two.
In less than an inning, Ned Yost has changed my mind about his future as the team’s manager. Yost must go. He and his staff proved they can’t get the job done and never will.
