Rumorville: Vicente Padilla
Ken Rosenthal reports that the Brewers are one of three (or possibly several) teams interested in Vicente Padilla:
The Rangers will be a team to watch at the deadline, acting as both a possible buyer for bullpen help and seller of veteran talent. Right-hander Vicente Padilla, the subject of inquiries from the Mets, Yankees and Brewers, among other clubs, is perhaps their most intriguing commodity. The Rangers, however, only would move Padilla if they received quality young pitching in return.
Padilla, who turns 31 on Sept. 27, is on pace to produce 14-plus wins and 200-plus innings for the fourth time. His contract — $11 million this season and $12 million next season with a $12 million option for 2010 — isn't terribly excessive for that type of performance. And his makeup, an issue in previous stops, has not been a problem in Texas.
For God's sake, let's hope Moustache is only messing with us. Padilla hasn't been good for several years, since 2003. How long ago is 2003? Neither the "Firefox" browser you're using nor "Governor Schwarzenegger" existed until 2003. The thought that we might give up someone of value to get him...someone who had an ERA sneaking up on 6 last season...that we'd be stuck with for one or two more years...for a "reasonable" $12 million...assuming the numbers over the last 3 months and not 3 years are predictive...ow, my head hurts.
Plus he wears makeup.
I just wonder who Rosenthal is trying to convince. "Intriguing?" "Quality young pitching in return?" "Not an excessive contract?" He sounds like he lost a bet and became an agent for a day.

You're selling him short
Padilla isn’t an ace, but he’s probably just as good, or better than Jeff Suppan.
Except for last year, in which performance may have been affected by injury, he’s been above average for a starter every year since 2000. His numbers lately haven’t looked great because Texas is very hitter-friendly.
Also, cheese.

Even if he were
as good as Suppan, which seems about right to me, would you really want another one? At that salary, and giving up a prospect?
I am but a simple caveman, and your ways with baseball statistics confuse and frighten me. However, I do know this: from 2004 through 2007, his best ERA was 4.50. He’s had a decent WHIP a couple of times, and not so decent.
I just can’t yet make a case for thinking that trading for him is a good idea. At all. (Did I mention that in his last 54 innings, he gave up 31 earned runs?) On the other hand, I can make a case for Texas trading him, to get out from under that contract and to get something for someone who seems to be rolling downhill.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"
