Besides the loss.. great day.
So.. my buddy and I decided to go pick up scalped tickets. Got in for 20 bucks.
Just then our friend Erin called, said they had extra tickets in 124 row 6. So we got into row 6. It’ was great… but it gets better. Half way through the game, she gets a call and we go to the press box. This is where I meet, Steve Czaben (He has sweaty shoulder), Trenni (I managed to not be tooo retarded) and Drew Olsen.
Since I had great tickets, the Cub Fans aruond me (Minus a dude who walked down) were very knowledgeable. They didn’t mock (Cept one in a broom). Ended up at a bar, and meet Aaron and Lisa Cub Fan. Pretty cool people.
So to sum up.. I had a great time minus the Brewer loss. And Cub fans aren’t all goblins. Just the majority of them.

Yeah, we aren't all bad
And stereotyping all of us for a few morons isn’t that fair.
Heck, on Monday, the entire Brewer’s fanbase cheered D-Lee getting injured on a foul ball and I don’t hate every Brewer’s fan.

Hey, that's great!
I don’t think anyone, except for you, is interested in rehashing THIS conversation again. There are plenty of Cubs blogs to visit; I kindly invite you to join any of those instead. I promise, you’ll find people in better spirits who are much more (read: at all) interested in what you have to say.

For someone who is "never interested"
You always seem to respond to whatever I say.
Maybe you should stop responding, and I’d take you a lot more seriously.

LOTS to talk about
Two thoughts come to mind, involving recent Brewer history such as 2001 (when kirbir was thinking about going to high school):
Sweep suits became part of Milwaukee baseball lore in June 2001, when the Brewers took three in a row at Wrigley Field, improved their record to 38-34 and pulled on their garish threads in a show of team unity. They went on to lose 60 of their final 90 games, which many observers felt was punishment from the baseball gods.
The other is in 2004, when we were 4 games over .500 at the all-star break...
but went 22-53 afterward, the worst second-half collapse in baseball history for a team that was over .500 at the midway point.
Despite the recent hallucination I had that we just lost 4 games to the Cubs at home, I still think we’re a playoff team, and possible contenders for the NL Central crown. I think a lot will depend, though, on how the team responds at tomorrow night’s game at Atlanta. Ryan Braun, your teams needs you again…

No big deal
The Cubs are still well below .500 on the road and have a significantly worse record than us over the last half of the season. This series was only really important media-wise, it’s no different than four random days when we lost and the Cubs managed to beat some other team. We still gained a lot of ground in July.
Unless you expect Sabathia and Sheets to lose the majority of their starts over the rest of the season (or our offense to continue to hit 0.050 with RISP), I still don’t see how we don’t win the NL Central.

I'd agree IF
we’re able to shake this series off. That was some pretty bad baseball all around.
Actually, this would be a good time to see if this Yost fellow is worth, well, anything. Relatively easy schedule, young team, two months to go, off a really really bad series…I’m curious to see how he and the team react. Pressure’s on now, Ned - prove to us you’re worth something.

I think this team can do it
Our impressive record over the last two months was directly preceded by our slaughter in Boston, which prior to this series was probably one of the low points of the season. Still a lot of baseball left, hopefully Yost doesn’t overreact.

hey, good point
I seem to recall our performing well after the fiasco in Detroit last season too. Maybe it’s all part of Ned’s plan! That would explain starting Counsell at third…

While I agree with the idea that we shouldn't over react...
... I think the phrase “no big deal” is a little much. With a 5 game deficit and 6 games left on the schedule and the Cubs, there’s still a pretty good chance that our performance against the Cubs this season will dictate who wins the division (unless the Cardinals catch fire).
But the Wild Card will probably be determined by how we play in the other series. This team should, on paper at least, have a very strong August. in which we play a total of 27 games, but only 5 against teams that are currently over .500. If they manage to go 17-10, which appears doable to me, they’ll have 77 wins going into September, and need to win just 13 games against tougher competition that last month of the season to hit 90 wins. I’m still convinced that 90 wins gets you the wild card, though probably not the division this season.

Does this mean the Ned Yost haters will be gearing back up for August?
I can’t imagine a real Brewers fan that has 100% faith in Ned Yost after this series. I love the guy and think he’s the manager that takes us to the playoffs, but he just absolutely sucked it up this series. I just don’t see a lot of positives coming out of this series with Chicago—hell, our expectations went from four game sweep to take three of two to just win one game to don’t look foolish. I’m sure some fire Yost guys will come out, because after going 7-0, they went 1-6 at home, and have lost five straight.
If he's the Prince, then I'm the King.

Still nine over .500 though
I think this team has proven it can play at home in the longrun. The fact that we haven’t lost a road series since June is more important, in my opinion.

That's the thing
I’m not feeling particularly anti-Yosty right now. That was such a disaster on all fronts, I can’t pin the blame all on him.
How the team does in August, though, against fairly mediocre competition, will dictate whether or not I whip out the Ned Yost voodoo doll and steel pins.

Yeah.
I’m feeling more anti-Melvin than anti-Yost at this point, probably for the first time. I didn’t like some of the decisions Yost made in this series, but those losses had a lot more to do with the players on the field than the managaer in the dugout. That’s probably always true, but it seems particularly obvious in this instance.

Are you kidding?
The Suppan and Sheets losses were basically in part because of the two of them sitting out the mound LONG after they shouldve been pulled. But we all know Ned’s “let him work himself out of it” policy….

Yeah that's right.
It’s Yost’s fault we were outscored 33-11 in the last 4 games. I’m not Yost apologist, and I think he should have been fired a while ago, but if you think Yost is the reason we just got swept in our own park you weren’t paying attention.

Part of me does wonder how Attanasio will react to a failure to make the playoffs...
... in a season where he authorized the payroll to hit $90 million and put the team on the verge of going into the read for the fiscal year (his quote was the team might break even if they make the Series). Does he end up thinking that if the current regime can’t get him to the playoffs under these circumstances (a healthy Ben Sheets, overall lack of injuries except Gallardo, a second ace starter, free agent signings as requested by Melvin), that maybe he’s got the wrong guys calling the shots in the GM’s office and the dugout?
It’s possible, though I sort of doubt it. Attanasio seems pretty level-headed, but at some point his patience has to run out if there are no playoff appearances.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Jul 31, 2008 6:34 PM CDT 0 recs
I was wondering that too
He seems too smart to put up with spending past the team budget and have nothing to show for it. Also…a $90 million payroll is hardly small-market. It’s not the Yankees, but it’s hardly shoestring either.
I also wonder if there’d be any difference if the trading deadline were tomorrow instead of today.

"I also wonder if there'd be any difference if the trading deadline were tomorrow instead of today."
I doubt it, with Melvin calling the shots. Not saying he’s wrong, but it’s pretty clear he identified the pen as a place where an updgrade could make a difference and he opted not to make a move because the price was too high. That’s curious to me. There weren’t many deals with high profile relievers this season, but there were some big names/players that changed hands for fairly modest prices. If you look at it, I think the best prospect package that went out for an established player this entire deadline season was probably the one we put together for CC (particularly considering the supposed list of guys for the PTBNL). Some fairly significant players changed hands for relative bargain prices, in my opinion, yet the Brewers didn’t make a move in the pen because the price was too high. Curious, in my opinion, though they certainly weren’t the only team that explored their options and ended up not making another significant (or any significant) deals.
I’m happy with the CC deal, don’t get me wrong. But even with the trades that happened today, it looks to me like the best deal of the last few weeks was the one the Cubs pulled for Harden/Gaudin. They added an ace (if an oft-injured, limited to 6 innings ace) and significant bullpen help for much less than what we gave up for CC alone.

It's also possible they'll still make a trade
Some relatively expensive, less-coveted guys might make it through waivers (like Ray King last year). The extra few weeks from July to August means prices go down and the team still gets a serviceable (if unspectacular) piece for the bullpen.

Bunting Perspective
What sort of response, if any, did you have to Braun’s two bunt attempts in the game? I was a bit surprised with the small-ball attempts by, imho, the best pure hitter in the lineup.
To me (and I am not a terribly informed fan), both AB’s seemed better suited to let Braun take some good rips.

Brewers Aug/Sept record of recent memory
I tried to envision the crew tearing apart their competition during the last two months of the season but couldn’t remember if they had done so in the past. BP has them with only three Augusts or Septembers with winning records, ugh, and a .437 and .456 winning percentage respectively. To top it off, 17 of 27 games in August are on the road and Nedly’s road record is a stellar 187 and 298 (.385) since 2003. Yikes. Couldn’t seem to break the road record on a monthly basis. The players may have changed, but it is the same guy driving the boat.
