Game Thread #86: Pirates (40-44) at Brewers (46-39)
Like battlekow, I am disclaiming all knowledge of events in Arizona yesterday.
A good way to get that taste out of your mouth is to focus on the matchup today: Ben Sheets and his sub-3.00 ERA against Tom Gorzellany and his 6+ mark. It's best not to think about how Gorzo has pitched against the Crew.
Game time is 1:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.
Go Brewers!

mmmmh lefties
I wonder if Prince might get another day off today? He has sure been scuffling a lot recently.
worst-hitting pitchers in the NL?
I’m headed off to a weekend of science fiction conventiony goodness, so I’m not able to check this in the manner it deserves (which is probably not much) but are Sheets and Gorzelanny the worst-hitting active NL pitchers over their careers? I know Gorzo actually managed to score a run this year so this year’s small sample is probably not indicative of how bad they actually are.
Close
Of all the active pitchers with 100 or more career PA, only seven have an OPS below .200:
Mark Redman .142
Brian Moehler .157
Doug Davis .180
Tom Gorzelanny .184
Aaron Harang .187
Ben Sheets .197
Claudio Vargas .199

Sheesh
Redman is 8 for 152 in his career. Somehow he’s got six walks, which is almost embarrassing.

The pirates announcers aren't too great

sure, but...
a lengthy Trenni appearance would have been just what the doctor ordered after I missed out on all her Summerfest reporting and had to deal with Mark Grace the last few days…
Billy
Great way to start his streak of starts this week
Also
Don Money was on the pregame show with Jim. He didn’t say anything really new but if you want to listen it will be archived after the game.
And a high leverage fly out there
Tons of pitches by Sheets and with how our pen performed yesterday that is scary.
Thinking way ahead
If Torres isn’t available today might Gagne be our closer today? He looked by far the best out of the pen yesterday. Kind of wishing we still had DiFelice here as we might need several innings from someone today.
I thought maybe they were testing Doumit
He’s now got 9 CS in 28 attempts, though, so it’s not like he’s awful.

Joe Borowski
DFA’ing him is like getting someone in trade all by itself.

Indians could have done this at any time, though.
I think they’re clearing 40-man roster room for a Sabathia deal.
LaPorta and company don't need to be added to the 40 man
I would be mildly surprised if they would call up someone like LaPorta right away if the trade happened tomorrow.

I know, I know :)
I was just trying to make fun of Joe Borowski, albeit badly.

Too bad he wasn't actually on fire
He might’ve run faster then.

Sox-Yanks
Check out the Gamecast video of the Youkilis triple. The ball rests on the top of the wall. Good camera work on the second look at it
Good golly
This is the first season Sheets has had more than one walk since 2004.

Maybe he's got his 10 lbs he lost in spring back

JimJerry
It’d be kind of funny if he has a good game and is traded right after it, a la Gabe Gross.

if this keeps up
I’m not so sure anymore I want to trady Hardy. Can we trade Weeks instead and shift JJ to 2B once Escobar is ready?
true
I’m not a fan of selling high for the sake of selling high, though. If Hardy could get us somebody really good, sure.
I am not saying we have to trade him or even should
I am just saying we probably get more for him than Weeks right now.

Trading Hardy would be contradictory
Trading for CC to win now and then letting Hardy go?
Makes no sense.
I am pro-Cameron
It hurt Braun so much to take a walk
that he had to get picked off
Can't pitch Gagne in rain. He’s like the B-2 bomber of baseball.--TheJay
2-out RISP hit
Why does Hart hate giving us reasons to worry? :)

They're cheering Billy Hall
That’s nice of them.

So Sheets is at 101 pitches right now
This has been a long inning too. I wouldn’t mind just taking him down now and saving him a bit.
Where's Bernie's patriotic uniform today?
Hasn’t he worn the stars and stripes on holidays in the past? Need an answer to this important question.
I actually like PIT, but
Crew needs to outscore them 50-2 this series for reasons future and past.
I am pro-Cameron
Finally Braun's hand is better
I was worried I wouldn’t see him until next weekend.

"Pujols just unloaded." - Bob Uecker
more seriously, I'll be rooting for the Cards
They’re the much more likely team to have a weak second half, so if they can help cut down the Cubs’ lead before it happens, I’m all for it.
Villanueva
With the injured hamstring trot to first.

Save for Villanueva
Second of his career.

I guess
BA noted during the game that the pitcher “saves” the rest of the bullpen so I guess there’s that.

Sweet
sounds like another good win. I think we all needed that after the day that shall not be named.
I was listening to some pirate postgame and they were very optimistic about the next two games
That surprised me because they basically threw several of their young pitchers under the bus. Don’t they realize we kill left handed pitching? Sure Bush isn’t great but he is pitching better recently and Suppan has been very good last start notwithstanding.
Run differential
is back positive for the season at +5. Hopefully Bush helps them keep it that way on Saturday.
