Game Thread #91: Rockies (38-53) at Brewers (50-40)

Apparently we're going to have to keep playing games every day.  For some reason I was under the impression that the schedule had been rearranged so that Sabathia would start the rest of the games this season.  Oh well.

This pitching matchup is pretty nifty, too.  Ben Sheets will take the mound against Glendon Rusch, which sounds a little like Maria Sharapova versus Alla Kudryavtseva...or, well, maybe not.  I find it entertaining that the Rockies may still consider themselves "in it" despite a record 15 games under .500 and the presence of Glendon Rusch in the rotation.

Game time is 7:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.  (It has Greg Reynolds listed as starter, but he's in Triple-A.)

Go Brewers!

I just realized

The WTA Tour lists weights for players. I’d think wandering around asking for that information has gotten more than one Tour employee in trouble.

Derek Jeter is day to day after being hit by a pitch and being gorilla press slammed by a Bizarro Ray.

in my experience

serious female tennis players could care less. I’m sure there are exceptions, but I’m often startled by girls I barely know openly discussing their weight, how much they’ve gained or lost, etc.

also, I would bet that like baseball weights, these girls aren’t getting measured on an official WTA scale every six months, so they can skew the numbers if they so choose.

Also, cheese.

I guess there's a major difference between...

Serious professional tennis players and mid-major college basketball players. My only experience with the subject is via a friend who worked in the sports information office at a college, and once told me several interesting stories from his attempts to get accurate info for the team’s media guide, which involved some players refusing to talk and some players giving him information that was obviously inaccurate, especially when it came to height.

I should note:

This is the women’s team we’re talking about. It was probably implied, but now it’s stated. :-)

I don't think he can beat it

That’s the record for consecutive strikeouts, as in, the first eight batters struck out. Since Sheets gave up a walk and a hit, there might be a different record for consecutive strikeout outs to open up a game.

Here’s the box score. Oddly enough, he threw a complete game but only had two more K’s the whole way, not even tying his career high of 11, which he had set earlier in the year, in only 7 innings. He struck out 11 in 7 innings the next year, too.

Comma usage

From the official site:

According to the league, David Wright of the Mets and Pat Burrell of the Phillies are mounting, “significant challenges.”

I’m not sure this can be parsed to fully make sense, but it appears that:
a) Wright and Burrell are mounting. (What? Each other, maybe?)
b) Something is a significant challenge. Wright and Burrell? Their mounting of each other?

Also, cheese.

the only

way i can see a team giving him more than 7 mill is if he either stays healthy the rest of the year or has an electric post season

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:02 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

huh?

7 mil is nothing for a pitcher like that. Unless he gets an injury that would keep him out for all of next year, someone will pay him that.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 9, 2008 8:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

really?

i guess i could see that, I’m not sure i would want my club to make that kind of deal unless it was for 2 yrs or something like that

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:04 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

nothing's stopping them from doing that

If he decides to elect free agency, the new team wouldn’t be restricted to just offering a one-year contract.

by Zeyes on Jul 9, 2008 8:06 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

as a reference point

Livan Hernandez is making $5MM this year. Kenny Rogers is getting $8MM. Heck, the Cubs are paying Lieber $3.5MM.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 9, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

true

so correct me if im wrong but the Cubs could decline the option and then give him whatever he wins in arb. to control him for another year?

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:07 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

they could...

or they could come up with some kind of extension, or maybe harden wouldn’t opt out. sounds like a lot of things are still up in the air.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 9, 2008 8:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

i wouldnt think that the Cubs werent aware of this but you never know

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:10 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Cub Reporter guy doesn't seem to think...

that declining the option would necessarily void the trade demand potential:

Of course the Cubs could always decline their $7M club option for 2009, making Harden merely eligible for arbitration post-2008 (but that won’t happen, because there is no way he gets less than $7M in arbitration, or else if the Cubs decline their club option and Harden doesn’t think he can get more than $7M, he’ll just demand a trade).

by Zeyes on Jul 9, 2008 8:15 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ah

i think you right there

could be interesting and makes getting gaudin even better for the cubs

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:16 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But as another cubs fan points out

say Harden demands a trade- if the Cubs deal him then he wouldnt become a FA and get a new deal. So unless he loathes the Cubs or Chicago I dont see why he would do that

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:22 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the problem from the Cubs' perspective will be...

that everybody will know they have to trade him by March, so the Cubs won’t have any leverage to get a decent trade return.

by Zeyes on Jul 9, 2008 8:25 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That probably won't be too bad

they’ll have plenty of leverage from all those teams bidding against each other. If Harden is desirable enough to think he’ll demand more than $7MM (i.e., not hurt or imploded in the second half), Jim Hendry will be a very popular guy at the winter meetings.

Also, cheese.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 9, 2008 8:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

but

if i am right about this and Harden forces the cubs hand they could send him to a terrible team and he wouldnt have a new deal because he would have got his trade therefore losing his right to FA

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:29 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

According to the CBA - Article XX(C)(2)(b)

Harden could designate six teams he doesn’t want to be traded to.

by TheJay on Jul 9, 2008 8:30 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

lol

this is getting more and more complex by the minute

pretty neat find by TCR though

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:32 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

overall

i would have to say I doubt he tries to demand a trade but you never know- it does seem like he has the right to do so, but the Cubs would just trade him before letting him walk (would he be a Type A FA?)

by ACB on Jul 9, 2008 8:35 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

as far as I gather...

the Cubs wouldn’t be eligible for FA compensation if Harden walks due to the trade demand.

by Zeyes on Jul 9, 2008 8:41 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

so

they would def trade him if they had to

fine;)

be that way;)

I still stand on rather Gagne than mota.

And frankly, Shouse would be better than mota against 3 righties:P

we need a stat

this shouldn’t show up as just a loss for sheets… I think any reliever that comes into a one run game and lets it get out of hand, should earn a “Mota”

It seems like he’s got that “one of our guys” status where it takes forever to let someone go. I wonder if that inning could do it.

Yep

I’d prefer to use the team’s best relievers in every game in which the team has a lead or the other team is in a save situation. Three or four guys should be able to handle 110 or so appearances a year.

It is not always about usage

The staffing decisions (or lack of them) played a big role here. How much data does he need to see Mota aint got it??

by 80badger on Jul 9, 2008 9:23 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the thing is...

Ned seems to like having guys slide down the bullpen pecking order one step at a time rather than demote them to irrelevance right away (especially with veterans, even if the negative evidence is pretty overwhelming). Hence we’ll likely get “Mota, 8th Inning Guy™” followed by “Mota, generic close-game pitcher” followed by “Mota, fungible middle reliever” followed by “Mota, mop-up guy” over an excrutiatingly long period of time.

by Zeyes on Jul 9, 2008 9:27 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep you're right

Now we have no chance. And Mota can give the BP’s best a rest and pitch the 9th.

And as I surf, listen to the postgame radio and watch the Cards/Phils with the sound down, it looks like the Cards have tied it up… but hey, I’m wrong, the Phils tack one on, so unless there is a ninth inning comeback, they lose.

The bullpen is doing well, so they’ll cover for him till he gets it together. Stuff is so good its mystifying that he’s having problems.
