Game Thread #120: Brewers (68-51) at Padres (46-72)

Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres, Aug 12, 2008 9:05 PM CDT

Maybe I'm just prematurely turning into an old fogey, but there isn't much that can keep me up past midnight these days.  Jeff Suppan vs. Cha Seung Baek in the middle of August falls pretty firmly into the category of things that have no shot.  I give myself four innings at best.

One possible highlight to keep you watching, though: Mike Adams is firmly entrenched in the San Diego bullpen.  (Joe Thatcher is not.)

Game time is 9:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

Branyan pissed off Ned somehow. Its probably a “family” secret though.

by ol Pete on Aug 12, 2008 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe he doesn't want Branyan and Cameron striking out back to back

And changing the lineup order to preclude that possibility makes his head hurt too much.

Counsell is so hot right now

That’s not batting average, folks- that is an OPS.

Where can I check the number of pitches that a player averages?

by ol Pete on Aug 12, 2008 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Baseball-Reference has it under Pitch Data Summary

Located beneath the Special Batting section on each player page.

Counsell has seen 4.09 P/PA this year. Branyan is at 3.79 P/PA.

Speaking of CC Jr's stats...

I was at the Brewers game yesterday and bemoaned the arrival of CC Jr to the plate with some ducks on the pond. The gf pointed out, however, that since he was 0-3 so far and had a .222 BA, he was obviously getting a hit. And lo and behold, he gets the run scoring double. Don’t give me your fancy OPS stats, I got the awesome predictive power of my gf and batting average.

here is a comment I came across today

The Brewers seem arrogant to me. And like they have no respect for the game. It’s like they’re at a frat party.

And the untucking the shirts gets on my nerves. “Let’s untuck our shirts to show how cool we are!” Ya, what is this, 10th grade?

The all-time grittiest play I want to see

Is a swinging third strike in the dirt that ricochets off the catcher, hits the batter’s bat on the followthrough and gets knocked far away from everyone, allowing the batter to reach first. Bruce Froemming said it’s legal so long as the batter doesn’t try to do it, so I’m 70% sure it could happen.

says this:

Catcher Chris Robinson to lead off the fifth. Team Canada had some other options behind the plate, including 2008 first-round pick Brett Lawrie and Rangers prospect Emerson Frostad. However, the team went for defense.
