Game Thread #121: Brewers (69-51) at Padres (46-73)

Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres, Aug 13, 2008 9:05 PM CDT

Is there anything better to look forward to than a game against a last-place team in which you have a chance to extend a 7-game winning streak and are sending your ace to the mound?

Today's late-night special features CC Sabathia and Josh Banks (the Padres love these scrap heaps pitchers even more than the Brewers do!).  I suppose CC's going to lose eventually, but I still like our chances.

Game time is 9:05 CT, and here's the BR Game Preview.

Go Brewers!

It'd be neat

If Sean Kazmar flew out to Laynce Nix (playing in a blowout) to end the game, just because they were both just called up.

Sorry I had more to that:)

The only thing I don’t like about Nix is that he was pretty good in AAA last year from what I remember, but when he came up last year he was like 2 for 20 or so. So hopefully this year is different. He might get in tonight, but after all, CC and the crew should role tonight regardless. That’s a strong thing to think though…........

Nix was 0 for 12 in the majors last year

He’s 8 for 47 in a Brewers uniform. He has gone hitless in his last twelve major league games (0 for 16). His last major league hit was a ninth-inning home run off Joe Borowski on September 1, 2006.

So what's up?

I’ve been in Denver for the past week, mostly attending Worldcon and being a tourist so I’ve missed a lot of the Brewers news from the past week. My rental car on Monday had XM, though, so I ended up listening to the game while driving around Boulder and trying to mentally influence Seth McClung to not walk people. (It didn’t work.)

I did go to the Padres-Rockies mess on Saturday (not the 16-7 one, the other mess) and I have no idea how the Rockies got into the World Series at all. It’s largely the same team, except with a marginally better catcher and a broken Todd Helton, but nothing is together at all. And Aaron Cook had to give up an RBI single to Greg Maddux. BTW, JDLR still walks people like they’re going out of style. (I know, everyone’s shocked.)

by morineko on Aug 13, 2008 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

interesting - sounds like a good trip

I think people will talk about the Rockies for a long time. That was an incredible run at the end of last season. Made for a crummy World Series though.

They are a little different this year.

My ticket was originally for the 8/6 game against the Nationals, but it was rained out. It took them until 9 PM to figure out that since it had been raining continuously since 3:30, there probably would not be a game that night. The game was made up as part of a normal doubleheader the next day, so everyone had to exchange their tickets for a future game. I decided that I could miss the Hugo Awards ceremony and/or room parties to go see Aaron Cook and Greg Maddux pitch-I live in an AL city, so the chances of seeing Maddux live are pretty minimal, although I am going to the Padres-Brewers game on 9/6-because the only other day I really had free was Sunday and I’ve seen Livan Hernandez pitch in person 4 times this season already. I think I made the right choice.

I don’t think the injuries to Tulowitzki and Helton (and, a lesser extent but still v.v. important, Spilborghs) made that much of a difference to the season as Barmes and Stewart have really stepped up—but their pitching is atrocious. Shouldn’t have let Fogg go XD

A question about platooning

If you platoon a player because they hit a certain type of pitcher, doesn’t it become a self fulfilling prophecy, as they’ll face that type of pitcher less and less?

Logos on the mound

The Brewers generally have an M on the back of the pitcher’s mound and the Padres have their SD. If I was pitching for the visiting team, I don’t know if I could resist smudging it between innings.

CC

is running to first like Manny tonight

by molitorfan on Aug 13, 2008 10:54 PM CDT reply actions

Who would win

in a race between CC and Geoff Jenkins?

by dickie_thon on Aug 13, 2008 10:54 PM CDT reply actions

we may find out

if Jenks hits a dribbler down the first base line in the first round of the playoffs against CC

by molitorfan on Aug 13, 2008 10:55 PM CDT up reply actions

If that happens

we all lose. There would be no winners.

Not really

You can’t really win or lose a war, you can just be a survivor in better or worse shape than another

and I think the "worse shape" situation

kirbir just mentioned sums up the CC VS Jenkins footrace perfectly.

Counsell with a nice inning.

IMHO, this ump's

been all over the place on the outside corner. Just look at the last pich to Kendall and the first pitch to Tad Iguchi; strike for them & a ball for CC.

The Kendall AB was bad, but otherwise okay I would say.

You know Ned is itching to use Nix since it's his first day with the team

So why not double-switch Hart out, put Nix in right, and let the pen go the last three innings?

That's a good point

Has he ever waited to play a newbie? It always seems like he plays ‘em the same day he gets ‘em (Tavarez, C.C., etc).

Did he wait on Durham a bit?

by dickie_thon on Aug 13, 2008 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions

He did

Oops. I almost forgot about him.

I remember they said Durham was a bit under the weather right before we got him so he might not have been fully recovered right away for us.

Chris Mabeus

His family flew in from Alaska to see him and Ned didn’t pitch him the whole series.

Wasn't there some weird situation involved with acquiring Mabeus

Like they couldn’t put him on the roster right away?

by TheJay on Aug 13, 2008 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, they tried to call him up a couple days after claiming him off waivers

But apparently when a player is claimed, he’s technically on the 25-man roster for a microsecond, and so is subject to the 10-day minimum rule. I think that’s how it went, anyway.

by battlekow on Aug 13, 2008 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think so

He hardly played for the teams he was on last year. He was in Chicago when Skiles was the coach there, so maybe that’s why they got him. I’ve also heard that his contract isn’t guaranteed (not sure about that though) so he might have been included to make the salaries work and the Bucks will cut him before the season starts.
